Lions and tigers and … owls? Oh my. For whatever reason, certain corners of the fashion industry got together for a chorus of “Let’s Get Feral” for the fall season. Animal prints ruled (some of) the runways, and by that we don’t mean faux leopard skins, we mean prints depicting animals, from horses to exotic birds.

We’re all for bold graphic elements, but we’re mostly not feeling these. Really, only the Burberry and Proenza Schouler look good to our eyes, which is a shame because they’re the most traditional of the looks here. What do all y’all think? Would you wear any of these?

Mostly Nay. I have an affinity for the Horse ones though, but that just might be because I think Horses are under-represented amongst all the tiger, zebra, giraffe, and bird prints out there.

Love the Burberry, plus it seems easy to wear while fashion. The other prints are just… too much. Too big, too “This is a ANIMAL !!!!” so NAY (except for the Burberry, I’d just love to have one).

If the owl tees are long enough, they’d make great sleep shirts. Most everything else reminds me of the collared sweatshirts that are so popular at my mom’s retirement apartments.

Obsessed with the Krizia. It is ugly but I love it. Everything else is blah. I don’t like the Burberry at all which surprises me because I tend to worship all things Burberry.

I sew quilts, and those owls could have fit right into the booming owl-print fabric trend that went on in the quilting world over the last couple years. Don’t get me wrong, I quilt because I like/enjoy it (and I’m in my very early 30s, nobody’s granny, don’t fit too many conceptions people might have about quilters), but nobody can tell me that 98% of quilting trends should blur over into the fashion industry.

  I am also a quilter (in my thirties as well!) and the owl fabric thing went kind of crazy. I notice a lot of things that happen in the fabric design/crafting/quilting world tend to bleed over into fashion. Sometimes they anticipate by a lot, which is kind of funny. Especially trendy colors. You’d think that fashion would dictate the rest, but it is not always the case.

    I suppose that’s true, at least when it comes to colour trends, but it’s interesting to me how many things are still “allowed” in quilting but not fashion. I think, say, of aqua and red quilts, which hasn’t totally died out yet, but I dare anyone to find a red/aqua outfit (at least here at TLo Enterprises) that hasn’t been soundly derided. (Granted, I think a red/aqua quilt would often be made for a little girl, rather than an adult woman.) Quilters, at least more modern ones than my Grandma, tend to be more adventurous with colour combinations and use of prints (even setting aside picture/children’s prints like the owls) than fashion gets.

  In jewelry, owls have been a thing for a while, too. I think it’s been the same-about the last 2 years or so, they are everywhere. I find them a bit creepy.

I think owls have reached their expiration date (and this is coming from someone who has not one but two ceramic owl lamps). They’re as ubiquitous as dragonflies were in the 90s.

The horse garment is interesting, maybe partially because the print looks almost abstract at first. The other animals are too literal and cartoony.

Yes, owls have been a trend for a couple years now, at least in the crafty world and for younger girls (kids to 20 somethings). I would wear those owl shirt just for hanging out on the weekends, but that’s about it.

I can take or leave this, depending on the particular example. I like the Pedro Lourenço (and in general, I like the horses!). When it gets too kiddish, then I lose interest. I also like the Kenzo, although I hate the visible logo (my mother always taught me that if I was going to be a walking billboard for someone’s business, I better be getting paid for it.)

  the 80s, except the background was pink rather than gold and was not

The owl t-shirts look like something from Etsy and tiger sweater things look like something I could get at the mall in town–a mall in which one of the anchor stores is a Tractor Supply Co. No, I would not wear these.

burberry is seriously late on the owls. thats been, of all things, an etsy trend so long that people who ridicule etsy have gotten over ridiculing this trend while etsy, itself has taken to ridiculing it on etsy, itself–& etsy is not known for looking at itself w/ a critical eye, if i may.

krizia’s been doing this sort of stuff not for years but for decades & has done it much better in the past. the only ones i almost like are the kenzo & the proenza schoeler. but the PS looks vintage & i have liked kenzo since before anything he ever made could really fit in that category & this is doubtlessly far from his best work. woulda coulda shoulda looked better had he hidden his monograph a bit more cleverly & w/ a little panache amid the post-psychedelia.

The only ones that don’t look like arts n’ crafts projects are the last three, though that Proenza is seriously drifting into ‘Granny goes to the casino’ territory. The Fendi is helped by the images’ slight abstractness, and at least the horse on that Pedro Lourenco looks fierce.

Oh, and Kenzo? If you want to slap your name in big, bright colors on something, try a stock car - not a sweater.

It is really weird to see high fashion ™ trying to cover a trend that has been super indie in its bizarre proto-creation. I can’t help but look at most of these and think, “God. Ironic animal sweaters again? Haven’t even the hipsters finished with those by now?” And uh…then I remember these are runway fashion and kind of blank.

The owl thing has been a hipster favorite on Etsy for the last several years.

The horses and the tigers remind me too much of the sweatshirt, plush pile blankets and faux tapestries that are seem to favored among the NRA crowd

I’m reminded of whatsherface on All on the Line who made those cool abstracted horse prints. Digging the Altazurra (though that looks A LOT like whatsherface’s stuff from AotL), Kenzo, and Pedro Lourenco.

Agree with TLo about the only ones that are decent looking. I didn’t like the stylized horses when what’s-her-face did them on All On The Line, and I still don’t like them.
If I wanted an owl shirt, I’d go work at Hooters (but they would never hire me).

In theory, I like the idea of animals. In practice, none of these appeal much, except that I could be talked into wearing the Proenza Schouler. Yet another bad idea from the 70s being recycled. However, I’d like to observe a moment of silence for my Kenzo sweater that I’ve had and worn regularly since 1984. It recently developed a hole – the ONLY sign of wear it had – and is now going to that big remnant heap in the sky. Farewell, faithful garment!

Love the Kenzo ones. I kind of esp love the tacky placement of the name – it’s been a while since I’ve seen something that overt that also still looked current.
