Fall 2012 Trends: Hats

Darlings, who doesn’t love a good hat? Well, people with big heads, we suppose.

Granted, it seems like a bunch of designers went full-bore crazy when it comes to the hat designs for this season.

Mara Hoffman, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors

Tracy Reese, Victoria Beckham, Yigal Azrouël

It’s interesting how many of these are menswear-inspired, from Donna Karan’s tiny little fedoras to Rachel Zoe’s and Armani’s more normal-sized ones; as well as Burberry’s newsboy cap, Hilfiger and Tracy Reese’s jockey caps, Moschino’s cowboy hat, Lacoste’s Holmesian deerstalker, and Marc Jacobs’ train conductor cap. It’s like playing dressup using a little boy’s toy box. Cute, but we’ve always been partial to a good cloche a la Ralph Lauren. Which ones are your favorites? And could you see yourself sporting any of these styles?

Since I am of the big-head variety, I’m going to have to say no. But I am fond of the top row the most, although I could buy that Anna Sui one for, like, twenty bucks at any boutique.

The newsboy cap with that gorgeous coat! The Giorgio Armani fedora. Period. The rest for me run from silly to hiddy (the hat that matches the plaid suit).

The first one looks like something you would see walking around the LSU campus on a football weekend. Blech.

Other than that, some of them are cute and probably wearable by the right person. Unfortunately, I’m not that person since I’ve never found a hat that I look cute in.

Loving the Burberry newsboy and the Armani fedora. Also the Rachel Zoe and the Ralph Lauren. The Mara Hoffman could be wonderful and dramatic, but I don’t think it belongs with such a breezy little dress. I see it paired with something more like what the Michael Kors model is wearing or with a gorgeous, luxe coat.

i was trying to find one i wouldnt wear. cos, sure as shootin, i’ve worn variations on every one of em. except maybe the cowboy–then again, when i was a very little kid i’m certain i wore one of those too.

the only one i dont like is the lacoste [which figures], as i dont like lacoste [which figures]. & i’d rather the faux ones were either 1/ fake or 2/ recycled–& theyre probably neither.

i like the anna sui the best, which figures just about as much as my lack of lacoste love. i like visiting the intersection at glam & silly, which comes right before i hit the boulevard of broken dreams, which is probably the street upon which i sort of live. i like the other better, though, so maybe someday i will be allowed to head back there. who knows.

&, strange as it seems to me, myself, & the even more tired me, myself, i really like some of the stuff in this marc jacobs collection. strange cos i can usually write MJ off rather easily. then again, i liked a lot of his big eyelets too. odd redux. especially since most people who ordinarily like MJ, which i dont, did not like the eyelets. otoh, i think they grow on a person. not the eyelets themselves but–you know, i’m beat, i gotta get back to work before i begin to actually make sense!

No hats for me personally — my head’s too big. I like hats on other women, but not many of the ones shown here. Most of them would look even sillier off the runway than they do on it.

I love hats, bit since I’m one of those big head folks hats have always been a bit of a challenge for me. It’s even more of a challenge sine I now have a head full of dreadlocks to try and fit under said hat. As for what type, it depends on the outfit and mood. In fact, it’s easier to say what I dislike than what I like. Dislikes (on me); cowboy hats and lady fedoras. That’s about it. Otherwise I’ll wear whatever I can fit on my big head.

Oh, I love hats! I have about eight of them and I always want more. When I’ve considered moving to a colder climate, the extended opportunity to wear hats is a big selling point! Of these, I most like the Ralph Lauren smushed brown cloche, the Christian Dior fuzzy skullcap, and the Rachel Zoe relaxed fedora. I’d argue with you on the menswear inspiration, though — there have always been (going back a few centuries anyway) women’s hats that looked rather like men’s. Anyway, I’m glad to see the focus on them. Maybe there will be more good hats this fall in colors I can wear.

Faves: Burberry, Armani & Beckham. Although I did go on a cloche-buying bonanza this past winter, and just bought a royal blue fedora last weekend. I like the idea of the Marc Jacobs, but on me it would read “communist.”

Also, the Donna Karan dress is awesome.

Gimme that Armani fedora and I will rock it like no one’s business! I do love a cloche, though. I have a Kate Spade knit hat like the Anna Sui owl one, but mine has devil horns knit on it. I love that thing.

My impression from my friends who have big heads is that they not only love good hats, they PINE for them.

That Marc Jacobs up top isn’t even crazy, it’s just stupid. Making something that looks like a cheap souvenir from the Doctor Seuss museum isn’t fashion. I WISH I were the kinda girl who could get away with the Giorgio Armani or the Moschino.

I adore the entire Ralph Lauren ensemble. I also like the V Beckham, Armani and the Lacoste. I would wear the D Karan to a party or to lunch with the girls.

Headwear is in my pretty immediate future, but few of these awfully autumnal and wintery chapeaux will serve my needs this spring and summer, when the hair finally finishes falling out. Beckham and Dior are the only ones that would seem even remotely appropriate for my chrome dome and the seasons! In the meantime, baseball caps and knit caps and berets from dear friends of mine. Not haute couture, but probably made with more love than any of the designers’ toppers.

  The straw hats are in stores – not just the big sun hats, but also the fedoras, etc. I saw some nice mid-sized ones at Target this week that were not so aggressively hipster. I hope you can find something suitable for the warm weather.

I wear broad-brimmed hats all the time, because I live in Florida. I tend to look more for SPF than style–square yardage. All the same, i wouldn’t trade my Outdoor Research Sombrero for any of these. The Donna Karan one seems to me the only one which echoes the ultimate inspiration, the Royal Wedding. The others seem like afterthoughts (PR last-minute challenge: make a hat from leftover fabric).

I too am big headed, but I can get away with Fedoras and Newsboy caps, so the Armani and the Burberry would be doable. I love the Lauren and the Pucci, too.

even though we had a mild winter here in Minnesota, I’m voting for the Yigal Azrouël. Because you can never have enough fur on your head around here. For the total look though, I’m voting Donna Karan.

As the granddaughter of a milliner, I am genetically inclined to love hats. Love the Donna Karan, like the Rachel Zoe (a look I would wear) and the Vicki Beckham and Ralph Lauren’s look is a lot of fun and the Giorgio Armani is sharp as hell.

I LOVE a good hat. These hats on the other hand…Meh. They range from boring to moronic. If I wanted to parade around in a padded jockey helmet I’d join a riding club. Don’t even get me started on the purple and yellow monstrosity. And why do all the hats have to be menswear based? There was a time (many times actually) when women wore all kinds of awesome hats. Bring some of those back.

I love a good hat, but generally stick to what I find in vintage stores. Modern milliners make hats so large that they end up sitting somewhere near my nose! (Okay, I exaggerate, but only slightly.)

Without an extended period of mirror-gazing, I can only claim the Mara Hoffman (in cold weather) and the Ralph Lauren for myself. IMO, there’s an upper age range for several of these (newsboy cap, the owl) and I don’t think an equestrienne’s hard hat works as a model for street wear, just because it is such a function-specific shape.

But all that’s MY bias. There’s a person for every one of these out there. And since hats no longer have a “proper” place in our fashion lexicon, as long as you feel better with the hat on your head, I say go for it!

I wear proudly a bonnet in winter and a fedora in autumn but I don’t think it suits me all that well.
