    I completely agree with Armie. I often switch between him and Chris Pine for Finnick, but after seeing him on Gossip Girl (I know! But it’s on instant and so good to do chores to!) I think I support him a little more. I just need someone who can seem shallow and cheeky while also having the depth to play the whole Capital past and the poor, mad girl love interest thing!       I guess it really just depends on the character and the story in question. Harry Potter’s Ron Weasley HAD to be a Ginger, no question. When books are this successful I guess readers really cling to character descriptions.
      
      I don’t really care about the colour of Johanna Mason’s hair but I do care how it looks in the third and fourth film. It’s important visual about the character and her situation in the third and it’ll take a very brave actress to go that far.

It’s odd, but as I read book 1 I thought have been a better Haymitch. As I read books 2 & 3 Woody made more sense to me.

I thought Lenny was a perfect choice for Cinna. In fact actor I imagined in that role was Keith Anthony Cobb.

The other characters I mentally cast was Rue. As they described her I imagined Willow Smith playing her. Once I saw Amanda, I forgot about Willow. I also thought of Marcia Gay Hamilton as Coin.

    What I love about Cinna is that the part itself is colorblind. I think he’s only described as having short hair and gold eyeliner. The reader could imagine – and a director could cast – anyone for the role. And I thought Lenny Kravtiz was an inspired choice, he has such innate confidence and style.

I’m not expressing myself very well this afternoon, lack of sleep has done me in, but I guess part of what I’m celebrating about his casting is that the character was seen as colourblind. It strikes me that, in Hollywood, that’s probably very rare indeed; if a character is not described as being any particular race then the default setting is going to be caucasian. It makes me very, very happy when casting directors think more broadly than that.

      There actually was something about the way Cinna was described in the book that made me think he was black, although I can’t remember the exact wording, and SC never did come straight out and say it. I would have been surprised if they hadn’t gone with an actor of color. I’m taking a wait and see attitude with Lenny’s casting because I don’t quite see him in the role. He looks kind of tough and I didn’t see Cinna that way.

      It’s either Venia or Octavia, from Katniss’ prep crew, who dyes her skin. I hope they carry that through to the movies too. There’s a particularly sweet moment in the third book that I hope to see in, I guess, the fourth film.
      
      It’ll mean a lot of time in the make-up chair for the actress in question but if Gigi Edgley and Virginia Hey could do if for Farscape then she can do it for The Hunger Games!

    I saw that post as well. I really didn’t mind that olive skinned actors weren’t cast. I think that would have been a tough bill to fill. I would have had more of an issue if they changed the races of the characters. But Olive skin and blond hair are easy fixes. As for color blind casting, I don’t mind it as long as it stays true to the original source.
    
    As for R Parz as Finnick, I don’t see it. Finnick is supposed to be a pretty boy and even cleaned up R. Patz is never gonna be a pretty boy. Even without the Twilight thing, I would never buy it for this role.

      Mmmmmmm, I guess this is one of those ‘beauty in the eye of the beholder’ things because – despite his apparent unwashedness and all of the other bad press – I do think Mr Pattinson has a beautiful face and I think he could pull off the devil-may-care arrogance and flirtyness of Finnick when we first meet him.
      
      Physically, however, he’s absolutely not right – he’s just not fit enough. Painted on six-packs will not cut it for Finnick! I’m sticking with Armie Hammer. Though I do see what you mean about Ryan Philippe…
      
      I was mostly puzzled by the poster who has decided to boycott the movies as she seemed a little ill-informed but obviously felt very strongly about the issue. She was insistent that everyone from The Seam had clearly been described as mixed race whereas the merchant class were all blond and blue-eyed.
      
      I was wondering what mix of races would lead to uniformly brown hair, olive skin and grey eyes since the gene for brown eyes is so dominant. Having had a wee google on the subject it looks like it’s not so much a mix of races as particular groups within Algeria, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. So that’s kind of interesting, it certainly adds another element to how Panem was possibly set up and how far into the future the books are set.

      I’m actually going to re-read the first book this week, before I see the movie, but when I read the description of the people from the Seam, I thought of people in goal mining areas like Kentucky Blue Ridge Mountains where the people tended to be a bit more olive toned than fair, but were still essentially Caucasian. I have no idea of how to explain the gray eyes, but honestly didn’t think much of it other than it being a future world occurrence. Bottomline it wasn’t as deal breaker for me.

    I’ve been watching a number of British dramas on Hulu and Netflix and I find their casts are MUCH more diverse than American shows (I’m in the US) and I’m finding myself really irritated with our casting agencies or whatever. It seems Britain is simply getting the best actor for the role and we seem to only cast minorities if the role is about race.
    
    Watching television and movies, you’d think Britain had far more non-white citizens than the US, which is likely not at all the case. Ugh. When will we catch up?
    
    P.S. Will there be any more Misfits or did the series end? Loved it!

      I’ve been living in the US for over six years now so I’m horribly out of touch with UK tv, except for what filters through on BBC America and PBS of course! Misfits looks good, I hope it gets another season.I couldn’t even begin to tell you what the percentage of minorities are in the UK as compared to minorities in the US but presumably the UK has a much, much larger south Asian (Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan apologies to any country I’ve missed out!) population than the US and the US has a much larger Latino population that the UK.
      
      The UK is really very, very FAR from perfect so I would hate for anyone here to think that I’m completely dissing the US and saying that the UK is better. We still have many problems with equality in issues of sex and race but we do seem to be making a bit of progress.
      
      One thing I have noticed here is a real separation between what people will watch on TV and in the cinema. Tyler Perry seems to have totally sewn up the Black audience, George Lucas couldn’t get his Tuskegee Airmen movie made for love nor money because the studios are all blithering, bloody idiots… I think that’s definitely less of an issue back in the UK.
