  Thank you – I saw this and was instantly like, this is so incredibly offensive. If you spend any time on internet forums at all, particularly Failblog’s poorly dressed, you’ll know that many of these photos are copied from directly ones, such as the skittles hairdo, and also from how many women at my high school dressed! All of the looks they copy, from the hair to the nails, are style parodies based on American lower class black female fashion, which gets posted lots in ‘bad fashion’ places but actually is an extremely innovative and interesting sub-culture – and yeah, this laughing at it with (mostly) white girls in parody dress is definitely, definitely racist.

That’s how I read it too – but I was sort of second guessing myself, wondering if I was reading something that wasn’t there. It is sort of a companion piece to their “Black” features, to have white models dressed in contemporary black and Latina fashion instead of black models dressed as noble savages.

Yes, absolutely. It hits the crossover between poor African-Americans, poor whites, drag culture and the homeless. It’s fairly evil in the way it simultaneously ridicules so many marginalized populations.

I would also theorize that, in their mind, they’re just being anti-American. Trying to tell Europeans and Brits the reality of the diverse populations and subcultures in the US gets open ridicule. Because the “Americanness” of a person trumps all other facets of one’s identity and life experience. The conversation (in certain corners of the internet) is stuck debating: are Americans human? I’m guessing this Discount Derrida thought he was making a fairly standard critique of America the Generalized. The fact that they ripped it directly from an existing website showcases the intellectual laziness at work.

I can’t make up my mind what to make of people calling this racist. Isn’t it a little weird to assume being rough looking, so called trashy, and cheap codes as Black? To me it doesn’t, though I mean I’ll grant you my opinion on what is and is not racist towards Black people only goes so far since I am not myself Black…but I think there’s a problem with jumping to a racial conclusion here because it feels like it could easily be another moment where people have the best of intentions in calling out what they feel is there but the criticism is actually more racist, imo, than the content itself. ALL KINDS of people can be poor and trashy. That’s not a Black thing, despite the dominant culture trying to make us believe that it is because of how much it loves devaluing people of color. I did talk in my comment about lens and how I can only really speak to mine; that wasn’t meant to invalidate anyone else’s view or styles where everyone else is. In fact I’d love to hear how others take it, how people of color see it. And it isn’t that calling out racism is racist. It’s that assuming certain things are black or latina–almost always unflattering things–strikes me as pretty problematic in and of itself. Calling out every instance of bright makeup on a black woman as minstrel show, for example, can sometimes say more about the prejudices of the person doing the calling out than it does about the actual picture.

      Fair enough, I think you make a good point there. If it came across as gaslighting my apologies, but from what I knew at the time it seemed a little bit like some similar issues where well meaning people were very quick to jump to that, and in doing so potentially invalidated culture on the way. I saw a comment afterwards (and now see yours) that mentioned there are some actual pictures they’re referencing here, which changes my opinion. I don’t spend time on sites like the ones that I guess usually host that kind of thing because frankly I don’t like stuff that just exists to make fun of people, like get out of the mirror.com or whatever it is. Through a drag light I enjoyed it but if they’re taking a stab at real people from pictures then I think that certainly alters the whole tone.

      I understand. I fully admit it’s a perspective I just can’t have, not being black or latina myself. I can empathize to a certain degree and I can draw some connections between the discrimination I do experience in other forms and for other things, but I just can’t ever know that particular pain and certainly can’t evaluate it as well as someone who directly experiences it. It actually really confuses me when people who are not of a certain group even a little bit are so invested in telling members of that group how they feel. It always reminds me of a scene I saw once irl: little kid: I’m cold! Parent: No you’re not. Well, how does the parent know if his kid is cold, when he’s not his kid? I meant my comments in a questioning tone but I think that doesn’t translate so well over the Internet sometimes.

I think this is hilarious. Chic/desirable/salable in any way? Hellz to the no, and I say that as a complement. Too many editorials go the fantastical route and this is the exact opposite: high fashion brought down to a place that isn’t even attractive to us much further down on the societal totem pole. I actually bought this edition of Vogue Italia, and you know what, I like a little bit of haute mess in fashion, so I thought this shoot was if nothing else then interesting. I don’t object to it, nor to the fact that it got published in one of the world’s leading fashion magazines. That being said, those nails and toenails are so revolting, I couldn’t even look at them twice. So I do agree with filmcricket, that sh*t would not convince me to buy anything other than a nail clipper and some transparent nail polish.
