Harper’s wants you to know that Mila Kunis is fabulous, no matter how wretchedly ancient she is.

Or are we just misreading the intent of the gigantic “FABULOUS AT EVERY AGE” tagline? Because let’s face it, she’s 28. It’s pretty tough to be fabulous at such an advanced age so she should be lauded for it, don’t you think? Good for you, gal! What’s your secret? Yogurt? Yoga?

All sarcasm aside, she does get to wear some incredibly fabulous dresses in this spread. And for once, Terry Richardson kept in in his pants, figuratively speaking. Not a panty shot to be found anywhere, although the infantilizing is a bit on the creepy side. Okay, maybe more than a bit.

Still: pretty girl, beautiful dresses. What more could you ask for from a celebrity editorial?

    Not only is he a creep, I think he’s a terrible photographer. The lighting and composition in most of these are terrible. Sadly, the one exception – the bubblegum photo – is also the creepiest. And the styling here – super-short skirts, bare feet, not to mention the carousel – just adds to the infantilization. Just… ew, overall.

  In this case, I don’t think he necessarily made her look childish. Grown women aren’t supposed to chew bubble gum or eat cotton candy? The setting is a carousel, after all … a glass of merlot or a briefcase would be out of place.
  
  I think the clothes are what infantilize her. The McQueen and YSL dresses are a baby-doll silhouette (the McQueen extremely so), and the whole purpose of a baby-doll dress is to make a grown woman look like a child. If you look at the bubble gum shot, she really doesn’t look like a sexualized child. She looks like a bored woman chewing bubble gum. The difference is the fact that the dress isn’t child-like.

    But not to defend the photography outright. I agree that the setting is pretty hackneyed, and the shots pretty unimaginative. I just don’t think that he created the kiddie porn look as much as a couple of the designers did. I agree with the post about the two models who look like men. And what’s with the neck on the D&G … swimsuit? … model? That and her legs look tense, tortured, and anorexic. Like Angelina’s arms at the Oscars.

Cute dresses, not so bad art direction (why is she eating cotton candy in a cocktail dress?), but overall HORRIBLE photoshopping. There is a way of making it look (somewhat) realistic and this misses the mark by a long shot. I think Mila is one of the sexiest women alive (she’s on my list of girls I would switch for), but these photos don’t begin to do her justice.

What has me most excited is that this carousel was originally from my hometown! It was purchased and moved to Brooklyn after a fire destroyed the amusement park where it was a feature attraction.

Anyway, considering how horribly wrong this shoot could have gone with TR as the photog, it’s surprisingly well done. The clothes look gorgeous.

Trainwreck time. She is beautiful. Those clothes look pretty tortured.

The totally forgettable Versace dress at the beginning had the Angelina wide knee (yeast infection) stance, which made it rather silly looking. The Dior dress was a very tasteful and sophisticated dress that lost all class when worn on a carousel. The sheer skirt and the overall look was gone, because of the the pose. The McQueen dress was kiddie porn looking for a place to happen. Isit kiddie porn or lingeree? It is confusing when sexy clothes are worn in a place for children.The Chanel dress, with another one of those sheer skirts was a dud, because she was on the carousel 1) sitting, so the skirt was not seen, and 2) she was blowing bubble gum. The interesting parts of the dress-namely the sheer skirt and the sheer stand-up collar could not be seen. The D/G outfit-was that a swim suit or a circus performer’s outfit? Who’s life does that fit in to? The Vuitton dress makes the runway model look FAT ALL OVER, and the 3D trim going down the side makes it look more like a home sewing project, than without it. The overall look was dowdy. The Cavalli dress looked like it was a costume, for possibly a circus performer, or magician’s assistant? Again, whose life does that fit into? The YSL dress was interesting because the skirt was fited, even though it had the extra fabric on the upper hip. So, the model looked slim, even though she had the extra fabric on the hips. Howver, it could not be seen when Mila wore it, because of the pose. By the way, this was a great color for Mila.

In general , the colors were good for her, but the taste level for the photo shoot was questionable. The setting and the poses made a lot of high end clothes look sleazy.

Also love the YSL but angry at the hair and cotton candy for getting in the way of the shoulder detail. It’s a heck of a dress, like a babydoll that will also not make press speculate that you are pregnant. The D&G is, um, interesting, but really with the having her pole dance on a carousal? I guess it’s not as bad with the Cavalli since she’s more covered up, but the first one, jeez does that scream stripper-I see the sandals but they’re reading as clear heels to me. Ick.

Actually, upon second look it appears they just stuck her face on that one and made another random model do that pose. Anybody sure she even showed up for this shoot? The last and second to last look like the same exact shot, only one got a wad of cotton candy pasted in front of the teeth.

As others have said, it would have been so interesting to see her shown as the smart adult that she is, instead of draped over a carnival horse my five year old would want to ride (pause– shudder– ok). This is uninspired styling for what could have been a really artistic and memorable shoot. This makes me wonder how much input the model/actress has or could have in the theme and styling. Wonder if she could have spoken up or if she wanted to.

Terry Richardson, you are gross and all your photos for some reason give everyone’s skin an almost… grubby look. Either greasy or, as in this case, grimy. When you pair that with the heavy eyeliner and the knock knees and the candy floss, the whole thing doesn’t even have the dubious appeal of a woman playing Lolita. Terry Richardson wants Lolita herself – as Humbert Humbert sees her (‘perilous magic of nymphets ’) – rather than as the lost, hurt child playing tough she is.

I’ve always had this theory about Terry Richardson. It’s that he doesn’t do anything the models don’t want to do. “You’re in control, you’re always in control”, and it starts off rather innocently,but then he keeps pushing them until they’re doing something that they normally wouldn’t agree with right off the bat. But he’s manipulated them in a way they really are lead into these weird disturbingly sexual shots. If someone is a little more forceful (Like I assume Mila would be), then they don’t get into a situation where say… they’re straddling a locker bench in their panties. Because they’ll tell him no when they don’t feel comfortable.
It’s like when someone is pressuring someone into sex. That’s just how I always imagined Terry’s shoots happening. “Oh you liked that, how about in this next shot you suck your thumb and flash your panties? Not comfortable with that? That’s totally okay, you’re in charge. How about instead of doing that for me, you just suck your thumb? Great, yeah, you’re wonderful. Now keep doing that and flash your panties! Finally, Terry Richardson is a vile person (have you read the latest NY Times article on him) and it shows in all of his photography, even when he “keeps it in his pants.” The only way he will stop getting work is when people stop buying the magazines that hire him. Even then, he gets a lot of attention because he’s a pervert, which makes people look at his ads, which is what clothing companies and magazines ultimately want. There’s no such thing as bad press.

Actually, the McQueen dress with the balloons is even worse. I figured if anyone could wear that McQueen mini-dress and still look like an adult, it’s Mila. I was wrong. She looks gorgeous, as usual, but the styling is kind of creepy. Except the Cavalli with the bare feet on the merry-go-round horse. I love that shot. She looks so… REAL, despite the fact that she’s wearing a dress that cost more than the last car I bought.

I really sense that the only reason Mila didn’t have her hair in handle-bar style pigtails while really “riding” one of those horses was because she had the good sense to say “FUCK. NO.” and not because Terry kept it in his pants. He was probably really annoyed with her.
