Cover Girl: Katy Perry for Interview Magazine

Katy gets a little Winehouse for the cover of Interview.

Katy Perry covers the March 2012 issue of Interview magazine in Dolce & Gabbana photographed by Mikael Jannson.

Honestly, without her name on the cover, we might not have figured out this was her. She gets a lot of flack, but there’s a reason photographers want to shoot her and designers want to dress her. It’s because when everything’s in place, the gal takes one hell of a picture.

And we’re all going to have to get used to this. The fashion world was fascinated with Amy Winehouse when she was alive (a bit too fascinated, if you ask us) and that doesn’t look like it’s going to end with her death. The thing is, Amy, like a lot of icons before her, had a look that could be easily boiled down to just a few elements, making it adaptable and easy to recognize. For the next couple of years, expect messy beehives and cat-eye makeup any time a stylist wants to evoke a certain feeling.

Still, it’s a fabulous cover.

  When I first saw the photo I thought it was Megan Fox also. I’m not really a fan of Katy’s music, but I always find her look interesting.

  Yeah, I’m having trouble applauding her for looking good here because I can’t believe it’s her. I actually think it would be less time-consuming to transform Megan Fox into this picture than it was for them to transform Katy Perry. I mean, since when does her nose and face contures look like that? I only recognise the boobs.

    I still can’t tell that it’s her no matter how much I keep looking. Is her nose really pointy like that? Is her jawline that angular? She usually comes off as more round, somehow. Maybe I need to pull up a photo of her usual self and do a split screen.

She looks STUNNING! This just confirms all the thoughts I’ve been having about her hair. And I don’t mean she should rock this particular look. I just want her to move away from the bright colors.   I’m all about messing around with your hair when you’re young, and I can’t bring myself to bust on Kelly for what she’s been doing lately. But that gray hair was terrible. I don’t mind the lavender because at least it’s not gray now. Also, a few nights ago I watched an episode of Fashion Police from January. Kelly’s hair was ash brown. And I do mean ash. It was really flat looking, with that weird suggestion of green that ash brown can have. I think her hair’s been so bleached out that even filling it before she colors it again couldn’t keep it from grabbing the base color.
  
  Back on topic. I’ve always thought Katy is beautiful, but this is breathtaking. Totally worthy of a gay gasp.

There is something to be said for a person so blandly pretty they get completely swallowed in another person’s trademark looks, I think.

She does the kooky as well as anyone, but underneath the blue hair and the lollipop styling, she is truly a beautiful woman. I hope she lays off her usual schtick for a while, it’s fun, but it’s nice to see her doing something different.

I don’t see the point of getting a celebrity for your cover and then making them totally unrecognizable. I understand doing homages to iconic celebrities, but I think you should still see the poser (for want of a better word) in the final product. It’s a great picture and she looks fabulous, but is it much of a compliment to say she looks fabulous when she doesn’t look like herself? Of course this may be a calculated move by the magazine to get people talking about it – everything is so calculated these days.

For how great she might look in a look similar to Amy Winehouse’s, I don’t think it projects a career-friendly image: either she looks ‘vulnerable’ in the Amy Winehouse mold, i.e., ‘prone to self-medicating through recreational drug use and drinking to excess’, or it looks like an glorifying ‘homage’ to Amy Winehouse (which, for another recording artist, doesn’t do much good to admit that you’re not the biggest talent).

  i think theyre for wearing beneath the let me introduce you to my bra dresses. at least the top halves are. what the bottom halves are for–other than strip bars or faux nouveau burlesque performances–is anyone’s guess. the near-clear dresses usually have too much pomp & circumstance going on for golden rhinestone underpants to do anything other than clash.

She looks great, but….. If that’s an intentional Winehouse look (and it seems to be, although she didn’t have the copyright on exaggerated eyeliner) is that not a bit weird? It’s not so long since Russell wrote that exceptionally touching piece on Amy, who was a friend and someone who’d shared many of the demons he’s managed to get away from. Does agreeing to dress so like that dead friend so soon after their split not strike anyone else as a strange thing to do?

We see it as singer Katy Perry dressed a bit like late singer Amy Winehouse, when basically it’s a girl dressed up as the dead friend of her recently ex husband. Which is peculiar in anyone’s book.I do wonder if there’s a bit more behind the marriage split than her workload or his womanising.
