I agree with your ideas, TLo, but my biggest problem is her hair! She’s gorgeous and her hair is lovely, but the way it’s styled, it almost feels like it’s choking her. I’m not saying she had to pull it up or straighten it, but it’s covering up too much of her neck and face, and it makes her look a bit larger than she is. OUT

Too much hair. Then again, in about a week and a half, I’m going to have no hair, but I assure you my observation is not made out of tonsorial envy. A peppy print and a nice bodice, but I agree with T Lo that the hem should be a smidge shorter and the footwear should be more streamlined. I’d also soften the eyeliner, too.

  Hi, BB – I started chemotherapy last Friday, and I’m on once-a-week interim infusions between the “big” cycles. The usual time for the big hair loss to occur is about 13-15 days from the start of chemo, so I’m figuring I may be at my hairdresser’s for the Big Shave at the end of the month. No wigs for me – caps, scarves and hats.

    My unsolicited advice is to ask your nurses [& other patients, former patients, etc.] as well as your doctors about any side effects, even ones you feel are not a big deal, and consider trying whatever ameliorative suggestions are offered. I have one friend whose chemo months were relatively easy once she started taking an anti-anxiety med on her infusion days; my mother’s post-surgical life was vastly improved by switching to a different [prescription] laxative. Sometimes the little things make a big difference in your experience, and the “big guns” doctors understandably are not focused on those things.

Good to hear from you NDC. The surgery went well? Good luck with the chemo. The doctors told my mom ‘it takes a year of your life so plan on it’ and that’s exactly what it took.

  Hi, Dina – the 03/09 surgery turned out to be only an exploratory procedure, not the full-on cytoreduction, because, alas, I’m too full o’ tumors. My doctors put a camera into me, looked around and decided on chemo first. Neoadjuvant therapy (chemo first) is now the recommended course of action to shrink the tumor mass; this should mean less drastic (my sister says “less carnage”) surgery after the chemo concludes because the chemo will have knocked out some of the bad stuff. So, it’s IVs and imminent hair loss now, the Big Open probably in the early summer.
  
  Your mom’s timeline sounds quite right. And my life- and world-view has really changed. One day at a time, and a profound appreciation for the generosity and caring of so many wonderful folks from all over.

  I’m going to add that I hate it that when a woman reaches a certain age, probably age 40, when she is considered too old to wear long hair any longer and is told that her hair should be shoulder length or preferably much shorter than that. Why can’t a woman continue to wear long, beautiful tresses if she wants to? I know many people say that it draws the face down, but I hate to break it to some of these women, but even with shorter hair, they’re still looking older anyway. My mom always liked the freedom short hair gave her and that’s great and more power to those who love their short hair, but I’m tired of people saying that a woman can’t keep her hair long if it makes her feel sexy. My own hair is shoulder length, BTW, but I wear it that way as it makes me feel good, but I feel the need to defend my longer haired sisters out there. :)

    I think the whole longer skirt-length/shorter hair-length aging thing is changing a lot as people are aging better than previous generations. It all depends. Someone like Gwyneth Paltrow who is pushing forty has hair several inches below her shoulders, and people don’t bat an eye. Diane Lane wore long hair at the Golden Globes and I thought she looked great. Sophia Vergara is 39; I don’t imagine she’ll be chopping her hair off anytime soon.
    
    What I think is aging is when people get stuck in hair style ruts. Debra Messing’s hair hasn’t changed in eons and you look at her and remember her from 10 years ago with the exact same style (same with Jennifer Aniston, Brooke Shields, etc.) Mixing it up is always a good thing!
    
    But, there are people who will push these hard and fast rules, I agree with you that women should do what they want. I loved it that Helen Mirren is in her 60s, poses topless and wears bikinis on vacation.

  If you’ve been wondering off & on for more than 6 months, I’d say go for it.
  
  I begged all of my friends and acquaintance to PLEASE tell me when my (long) hair crossed the line into ‘faded hippie’ territory (N.B. I have colored it for decades, so it never has gone through a “greying” phase – indeed, it’s been years since I really knew what color it is under there.)
  
  Nonetheless, no one ever suggested it was time. The (straight, of course) guys always swore I should never cut it. After spending literally two years cross-examining people whose haircuts I admired, I chose a hairdresser and finally got it cut when my oldest was getting ready to graduate high school. I was SO thrilled with the result, that I think I should have made the change much sooner.

Let me just say, I’d love DM even if she was covered in dog shit. HOWEVER, I’m not a fan of this shiny cobblestone dress. The problem is in the shine, which bounces light in a way that adds volume, specifically to her hips. Coupled with the general horizontalityness of the pattern, it makes her look thick when you bounce a flash off of it, and I’m pretty sure she’s not. I do love the cobalt color and I think the general idea of structure and a nipped in waist is good, though. I totally agree about the sandals and the length. Reading the comments, I wonder if we’re all looking at the same photos.

For me, OUT, hands down, and any other flaws aside – it’s the dress! It looks awful on her – makes her look tank-like and boxy. Though I am amused by the speculations that it is perhaps crafted from tin or dragon hide.

If she chooses to stay with this version of her hair, and I imagine she will, she needs to master its styling. (Because this looks as if she did it herself. Hours and 3 meetings ago.) I don’t know if better styling will really help or if she needs a few inches off the bottom and/or some shaping. VERY subtle highlights maybe.

But really, it’s the dress.
