Cover Girl: Jennifer Lopez for Vogue Magazine

We spend a decent amount of time making fun of J Lo for her divalicious ways, but there’s something one must never forget about divas, even when they do ridiculous things:

Jennifer Lopez covers the April 2012 issue of US Vogue photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott in a Bottega Veneta dress.

When a diva decides to bring it, she BRINGS IT. That’s why she’s a diva. She looks so good here we honestly thought this picture was about a decade old when we first saw it. Yes, yes: Photoshop. We’re not denying that. But she really does look fabulous here.

    True story: my high school Pre-Calc teacher’s older sister (how’s that for six degrees?) was friends with Cindy in high school. She had her mole airbrushed from her senior portrait, he brought in his yearbook and showed us. She looked just like Jennifer does here.

        The similarity hit me in that boxing/codpiece editorial T Lo posted here a week or two ago. The extreme ’80s-ness of the shoot reinforced the similarity. I also think maybe J Lo has had something done or it is the eyebrows giving her a different look. They didn’t always look alike.

It’s interesting, but not unusual, that an abundance of star quality is not always accompanied by an abundance of talent. Sometimes I think she is the Joan Crawford of our time: not without talent in the right setting, but a star primarily through sheer force of will.

  Astute comparison. Never thought of Lopez that way, but people with a lack of self-awareness can be terrific at kind of projecting themselves larger-than-life. However, really talented actors need to be self-aware enough to observe and disappear into other characters. Lopez plays Lopez; Crawford played Crawford. Very different than, say, Helen Mirren morphing into Queen Elizabeth.

    I think JLo has TONS of self-awareness. You can’t build a personal brand like she has without some kind of ability in that department. (You can build a personal brand like Kim Kardashian has that way, but it’s a different kind of brand.)
    
    Watch her judging on American Idol sometime. The woman is savvy.

        I think probably we’re just both using the same word to mean two different things. Self-awareness doesn’t particularly mean great insight, to me–just being aware of how you’re behaving and what effect that is having on the people around you. If you’re famous, that expands to include a whole world of PR and it definitely gets more complicated, but either way it’s hardly psychoanalysis.

        Self-aware means awareness of one’s self–including feelings, personality traits, behaviors–so insight is, indeed, a critical piece of that.
        
        My usage is pretty standard. JLo, like a lot of stars, has a bit of narcissism to her–more than a bit, depending on what you read–and narcissists aren’t a self-aware bunch. They can, though, be incredibly charming and charismatic.
        
        So no argument that she’s very aware of the image she projects.

        I’m not saying she has particularly strong self-knowledge, or that she cares deeply about others; just that I thought the idea “people with a lack of self-awareness can be terrific at kind of projecting themselves larger-than-life” didn’t make sense to me, or at least didn’t for J.Lo.

        Well, then I think we should agree to disagree on that one. She seems pretty serious about her image and not self-mocking if any of the reports about her offstage divadom are true. But that type of focus on one’s self sans awareness can result in a tremendous sort of projected energy. I’ve seen this in other performers and, to me, Lopez fits into that category. But whatever.

The photoshopping on the left side of her face/chin is so bad and distracting that I can’t even see the beauty in this, and I love the JLo. Bummer.

The dress is gorgeous, although I like the orange-y shade that the runway lighting gave it much better.

Is that an old picture of JLo? There is a quality she had when she was barely up-and-coming that I see here (eyebrows? nose?) and that I had not seen in a long time.

Now if Jennifer Lawrence wanted to evoke thoughts of Girl on Fire, this would have been the dress to wear and I think it would have gone better with her coloring. JLo is werq’ing the hell out of that cover. Photo-shop or not.

I don’t know. The Photoshopping anymore just SO gets in the way. Why can’t we ever see people for what they actually look like? She’s a beautiful woman without all the manipulating.

She does look fierce here, there’s no denying it. I love the colors in this cover as well, I am on such a turquoise/red kick lately (Emma Stone’s Vanity Fair cover is still pinned to my corkboard). The combination works really well with her dark hair. For that matter, she looks so much more interesting with dark hair than that monotone beige bleach job she sported for so long.

That gown is to DIE for. Of course, had it been designed by one of the recent Project Runway contestants, it would have been deemed “too predictable a color combination” or “autumn nightmare” or some such by the judges. Flame + amber + chocolate FTW!!!

I just saw a picture of her from a youtube video of the Fly Girls, and she doesn’t look like she looks now – at all!! The woman has had some serious plastic surgery over the years.
