WERQ: Cate Blanchett in Alexander McQueen

We’re feeling giddy over the prospect of a Cate outfit that inspires snaps – it’s been far too long, kittens – and that has us wondering if she deserves a royal title, like Queen Helen of Fuckinfantastica. We could call her Empress Cate of Getthefuckoutofmyway but then we fear this will become a thing with us and we’ll be struggling to come up with many more titles down the road.

Whatever. The point is…

She made us gasp.

Admittedly, the hair makes her look like Mia Wasikowska’s mom and the shoes are making us wince, but she’s so KILLING IT in that dress that any concerns are rendered pointless. You WERQ that gold McQueen, lady!

  I had that same thought, but then I kept looking at it on her, and on the model…and I think that might be part of the “thing” of this dress. I mean, I think it’s intentionally supposed to ripple around her body like that. I’m thinking it came across in person more like rippling than like bunchy wrinkling.

  Yes MilaXX. This is not quite a Werq because of the shoes. She needed a much higher heel with less of a platform, in a lighter color. These peep toes make her legs look kinda stumpy. It hurts me to say that, btw, about our Cate.

The color and shape are amazing on her, but it’s shiny and puckering on Cate in a way that it isn’t on the runway model, which makes it look a bit fussy and poorly-fitted.

  I believe it (the glow). Someone once told me most of the most celebrated of the acting celebrities do ‘glow’ in person and I didn’t believe it until I saw Julia Roberts in her private life as Mrs. Lyle Lovett and she did, indeed, have eerily lovely and glowing skin. I don’t know if it’s skin care or makeup or star power.

  That’s such a great way to describe her. I remember seeing some video of her on the red carpet at the Golden Globes, I think it was, several years ago wearing a silver dress, and there was this split-second when there were all these flash bulbs going off and flickering on her skin, that she was so beautiful it shocked me, almost scared me (don’t ask me why, but that’s truly what I felt).

I like the understated sheen of the runway dress better than Cate’s. The gold on Cate’s dress is too shiny. I don’t know if the fabric in Cate’s dress is different than what was used on the runway dress, or if it’s the same fabric but Cate is wearing it under different lighting. No matter. The dress is too shiny and overworked for me.

If I were to describe this dress it would sound something like: shiny textured gold fitted dress with Christmas garland around the neckline and ruffles at the bottom. That sounds hideous but somehow it looks great on her. It does great things for her figure. Definitely a WERK

from the waist up it’s a great dress. below that it’s either a little bit too long or, probably more accurately, the seam that’s giving it its mermaidiness should not be there. or at least it shouldve been less constricting. one gather too many, it is, at the very least. also the shoes are pretty awful &, together w/ that seam & the awkward length, bring it down to a level below where it coulda been.

Well, someone’s bound to say it, so today it’s me.

I like it better on the runway model. It’s perfectly aligned, the color is more elegant, the dress requires the extra height and slenderness, the shoes are killer, and I like the styling with the crocheted hair snood, and the belt.

That said, Cate’s face is gorgeous here (love the lip color), as is that clutch, but her footwear was chosen by a pre-schooler reaching into a paper bag full of shoes from the thrift store.

That dress seems like the color shouldn’t work with her hair and skin tone, but it totally does. I think it was the right call to skip a belt, too, since the model has no chest, so the collar hangs differently than it does on Cate.

Whenever she wears a McQueen I always gasp. They go together so incredibly well, each elevating the other to a whole other level. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else wear McQueen like she does.

The closeups allow one to see that the rippling is intentional. You can
see stitches along the valleys of the fabric. Whether it’s fit or
construction, I like it on Cate with more ripples than on the model with
less.
