Vogue Korea: Spring Breeze

It seems a little silly to say we’re ready for spring, since, where we are, winter still hasn’t quite arrived yet. But our internal clocks are longing for crocus shoots and longer days, so this editorial from Vogue Korea entitled “Spring Breeze” couldn’t be a better subject to inspire us to say once again, “Darlings, here’s your pretty for the day.”

Breathe and center yourself. Beauty is good for the soul.

Very pretty. Where I live, the mountain laurels are in full bloom, their deep purple blossoms filling the air with a grape Kool-Aid scent. We never really had winter this year.

The model and the styling on this shoot, as with so many of the Korean ones, are simply extraordinary. They’ve really transformed some pretty ordinary-to-borderline-ugly clothes into things of beauty.

  That is what I was thinking too. The only thing in any of those pictures I would want if they were giving them away free is the little yellow bag in the Christian Dior shot but the pictures are all extraordinarily beautiful. The model and style team really are amazing.

I think it’s the hair with the sprays of flowers that does it for me…and how amazing the clothes look…and how serene the whole editorial looks….

I think the socks are supposed to be traditional Korean ones, which makes sense especially in the Marc Jabobs dress photo, as she is carrying that pot in a traditionally Korean way. Not that it totally excuses it but the socks are supposed to evoke a old-timey Korean feel. I think.

  Thanks for pointing that out. In 2 pictures she has instruments which appear to be traditional, too. One of them I recognize from very ancient Japanese culture, but the stringed one I have never seen, so I assume it is Korean. The whole series looks to me like “figures in a miniature garden.”

I seriously wanted the dress in the first picture, until I saw that it was midriff-baring in the runway shot. I didn’t find any of the midriff-baring styles particularly attractive in the runway shots.

That model is amazing BUT am I the only one who found her stick-like thinness disturbing? Her arms are the same width from wrist to shoulder. She looks like she’s starving. It distracted me from enjoying this as much as I should have.

Some of these photographs, especially the one where she’s laying down in the boat with the foliage around her, make her look like she is tiny – like fairy sized. In fact, the whole thing has a “Twin Fairies of Infant Island” vibe - which in my book, is tops. I love this, and I’ll bookmark it and I’ll look at it over and over.

Pretty, but I think it looks kind of strange how posed the model is. I mean, I know all models pose, but usually there is at least the illusion of movement. Here, even in what would seem to be movement shots (carrying that plant, walking with that thing on her head), she is so clearly stopped and posed in an awkward way. I don’t know–maybe that is what they are going for. I mean, the whole set has kind of a glossy, unreal quality, so I guess it fits in.

  The extreme artificiality of the setting (“natural” rocks with plants and trees growing around a glass “lake”) suggests to me a miniature or bonsai garden, with a doll posed in various ways in it. The one with the boat has a Thumbelina quality. The quality you describe of the model’s poses emphasizes the “tiny artificial version of nature” quality.
  
  Wasn’t the Winter series of photos in which pre-modern settings and activities were transposed to a noticeably shallow stage set also from Vogue Korea? this seems to me to go with that. They are beautiful series but also sad; the fragile seasonal reality (a winter requiring layers of furs, a spring concert under the cherry blossoms) is being preserved under glass for our inspection.

One of my favorite things to do is go to Barnes and Noble, grab a cup of coffee and sit in the cafe and look at the international editions of Vogue. I think they are far more interesting and creative than US Vogue. I wish I could buy all of them each month, but that would be a very expensive habit!

The way the model holds the haegeum (the string instrument) bothers me. While that is a very striking pose, I am pretty sure that’s not the correct way to hold the bow, it may even damage the string if you try to play that way. Yes the model is no muisian, it is not a recital flyer, and the haegeum is serving as a prop, not main feature. But a little research goes a long way. If you want your model to pose with a musical instrument, let her/him know how to hold it properly, and the result will look a lot more sophisticate. It always looks nice when one art form respects another one.

Maybe because I grew up in Korea and could claim to be a bit more familiar with Asian culture, these pictures just look tacky. The plasticky set and horrid photoshop, the sloppy mixtures of vaguely “oriental” images. Really weird cultural appropriations done by Asians themselves. When tastefully done, I love those traditional world fantasy, “make our own culture look romantic and foreign look” but in these photos, all the elements are clashing all the way.

I had to burst out laughing at the way the model is trying so hard to look graceful and dreamy and sincere while holding the instrument in the silliest manner. Was it that hard for all the highly-wired Koreans to google “How to hold a haegeum?”

I know art is more about the sensibility, the image, the fantasy, not the technicality but in this case, it ruins it for those that know something. The problem in Korean fashion is that Koreans started to view their own culture as foreign and mysterious and adopted the western oriental fantasy viewpoint and do a sloppy imitation of that. Funny how culture travels-Westerners looked at Asian’s life and went on to romanticize, exoticize it, Koreans started abandon their own culture to become western and while doing so adopting a watered down western culture and then went to NYC to study fashion just to see high fashion fall in love with Memoirs of a Geisha fantasy. This is obviously not new considering Klimt loved painting European women wear kimonos like bathrobes but at least those paintings had some childlike playfulness and charm to them.

This is as ridiculous as seeing white people dine in satisfaction as they gobble down their kimchi in a Chinese restaurant decorated with a maneki neko. Very huge parody fail.

  Yes, it’s definitely because you grew up in Korea and could claim to be a bit more familiar with asian culture. And to be honest, the level of flexibility on those “OMG, SHE’S HOLDING THE INSTRUMENT ALL WRONG” kind of things. I mean, I’m second generation mexican and my grandma barely speaks english, so I could claim to be a bit more familiar with Hispanic culture, but I wouldn’t get mad if it was Vogue Mexico and the model was just laying on a marimba. Just like I don’t take offense to “white people” gobbling up enchiladas on a mexican restaurant with zarapes on the walls. Everyone just has a different perspective when they feel referenced, I suppose.

    I was not offended or mad. I was simply noting that all the development in the art/fashion world is quite strange and ironic in some ways. Like I mentioned bc of my Korean background I know how eager the Korean world is to be so western and “modern.” I also agree that everything depends on point of reference and such. But I wasn’t even being culturally dogmatic. Like someone else pointed out, it’s all good referencing other cultures and stuff but at least make the effort to show appreciation to the art form it’s referencing. It can’t be that hard to google and find one picture of a person holding the instrument.
    
    Nothing that I said was dramatic as you seem to imagine. Flexibility on my part is not the issue here. The issue is the level of kitchiness in the photographs which obviously escapes the mind of many who do not have the same familiarity but people interested in culture and working IN Korea should be aware-This is not done by Americans. The restaurant reference was to give an example of the absurd and humorous situation. I enjoy dining at fake-Asian restaurants with my white friends as well. I don’t get mad at them but I would laugh if anyone treated it like a field-trip to get authentic exposure and sing praises to a really horribly done lychee pudding or something absurd as that in fear that I might get offended if they didn’t.
    
    Wouldn’t you laugh when there is a shoot inspired by the 18th century where models are dressed in extremely sloppily made Antoinette wigs and hold out fancy violins with no clue on how to do so? There was a shoot done by Annie Liebowitz where she was inspired by ballet and made models do all these awkward, stereotypical ballet poses which made dancer readers scoff while others were like “OMG Gorgeous!” something I would have not known but would have found hilarious too imagining all the people involved in the creation take themselves so seriously. When you have sensitivity and eyes trained, your expectations for art just go higher. Seeing these things is like listening to music that has missing notes or ignored the rhythm the composer wrote. Sure, be inspired by ballet but then add a twist-Indicate it is YOUR fantasy not what dancers do.
    
    I love taking cultural elements and reinterpreting it but I also know that not everyone should take that venture. These are just kitchy images made by wannabe western people who are basically copying Asian wannabes.

Wow, that is so beautifully styled. They made some really marginal designs look fantastic. Agree about the the sheer shoe/socks – those are weird, and they could have done without them.
