Tadashi Shoji Fall 2012 Collection
When you read show notes that tell you the collection you’re about to see took its inspiration from the “Golden Age of Shanghai,” then it’s not out of the question that one would settle back for a series of high-necked Chinoiserie dresses in the Dietrich style, but Tadashi Shoji’s a better, more interesting designer than that. We liked this collection for being a little unexpected while still calling back to its inspiration in a subtle way. There’s an old school elegance to the looks with a hint of modernity to them. To our eyes at least a couple of these looks don’t quite hit the mark, especially some of the gowns, but the shapes, colors, and textiles are all gorgeous and have us dreaming of cigarette holders and swanky nightclubs with mysterious goings-on.
