      We’ve said many times that our view of fashion isn’t rigid and rules-based. It all depends on who’s wearing the outfit, what her intent was, and where she’s wearing it. The “usual criticisms” don’t apply because Dita’s clearly following her own set of rules and because, as we said, she treats clothing like costumes.

  No–not too big–just too high and maybe too wide. Your foot slides forward when you’re wearing high heels–so the toes crunch and the heel pops out of the back of your shoes. I have narrow feet, and this happens to me all the time–even with lower heels.

      As a wide footed gal who can be quite mean to her feet I always wonder why none of the stylish companies make widths. You once and a while come across a shoe company that some girl you know will swear up down are super cute plus widths, but the ones that are made that way are always sort of dowdy.
      I work at a children’s shoe store where we do fittings and everything and it seems like, while narrow feet are not super common, about a third of our customers are wide. Assuming that this applies to the non children sector of the population as well, there should be quite a market for wide shoes.
      Is it that the footwear companies are averse to making something for ‘fat’ feet? Customers averse to admitting they have ‘fat’ feet? Or is there just an assumption that if you disregard your comfort and foot health enough to wear such shoes, than there’s no point in going though the trouble of making widths for you?

      My sister in foot width. I have found some lines on Zappos that carry widths. Probably not in shoes like the ones Ms. D is wearing here, but some fairly attractive shoes. But they’re few and far between.

      We went to Marmi’s first, at 54th and Madison, which on a bus-stop advert pitched itself as selling ALL sizes. But when we got there, they didn’t have my mom’s 8W, and they’re in fact who told us about Tip Top and Eneslow. Now, Eneslow specializes in orthotics and othopedic-style shoes, but they also sell wide and double-wide, and a great Italian line of shoes that are not at all orthopedic looking. Mom wouldn’t have touched them if they were. She came away with a kicky pair of pumps. (She’s 85, and such a fashion plate, I tell you, Helen Mirren HOPES to look like her when she grows up!) I’ve sent a friend there with very narrow feet as well, and she had pretty good luck.

With my Morton’s toe and fallen arches and bunions and slim ankles, I understand that my feet may be a shoe designer’s living hell, but don’t they also realize that I would be willing to pay a premium for shoes that actually fit properly?

      I have very narrow feet, and wear a half-size, as well. I can almost always find severals wide styles in shoes I like, but forget about narrows. There are so few shoes made for narrow feet that it’s almost a certainty that I will spend over $120 every time I buy even the simplest pair of shoes. And even then, they rarely make 9.5, which is what I need, but skip straight to 10, which are often still too wide. It’s SO aggravating. I can go to a regular shoe store and probably find 20 pairs of shoes in wide to zero or one pair at the most in narrow—and still not one in my size.

What a fabulous creature she is! To me, this isn’t matchy-matchy. Matchy-matchy is two or three elements of an outfit being the same color. When you go head-to-toe in one color, it’s considered a monochromatic color scheme, or a column of color effect. And when you pull it off with the aplomb the incomparable Miss Von Teese does, it’s spectacular!

While she looks great AND the dress is great, this is one of the few cases where the model looks jut a bit better than her (not counting the read face).

It’s interesting — even though the shoes don’t look like they fit right, and even though you ALWAYS see her in sky-high heels, she has remarkably pretty feet. She is well dressed considering how outrageous the dress and hat are. Her thing is to be not-quite a charicature of herself, and she does it again. At least her hat was smaller than the runway models, and her face wasn’t covered with camo-paint. She actually has a hint of good taste.

This is absolutely striking, and quite genius. I don’t think anyone but Miss Dita could pull this off and know exactly what she’s doing. It is incredibly dramatic, which it should be, given the event. The head-to-toe red evokes the head-to-toe black that a widow might wear, which creates a melancholic resonance amidst all the fun. She kept it sexy but demure, also befitting the occasion. Finally, there is the absolute perfection of her carriage, which grants her incredible gravitas. The men I knew who died of AIDS in the 80′s and 90′s would have recognized this look as a glamorous Lady Death (note its similiarity to the Mexican Katarina figures, from the poof hat to the drawstring bag), and adored Dita for it. She knows what she’s doing. I am bowled over.
