Vogue Korea: Queen of Snow

Because our morning commute from our bed to our desks takes about 15 seconds and therefore we haven’t had to deal with bleary-eyed early morning journeys through shitty weather in quite some time, we’re the irritating types who can look out the window in January, scowl at the mild weather on display, and whine, “When is it going to SNOW?”

Which is why this fantasy Sherpa/eskimo editorial from Vogue Korea is exactly what we want right now. See, when we say “When is it going to SNOW?” it’s because we always hold out hope that this time, it’ll look just like a Vogue editorial. We’re like that about a lot of things, actually.

I love it! They took a bunch of really ugly clothes, put it on beautiful women and made something spectacular. Pretty much the reverse of most red carpet scenarios.

    I believe Korea’s climate is fairly temperate–much like the Northeast or the Midwest. They have cold snowy winters and hot summers. I learned that from watching 10 years of MASH.

This is the way I like to see snow. Very pretty and very far away. Naw, not really, I live with winter winds and I’d prefer snow anytime to our chinook (and not chinook, which means cc-oooo-lllll-d north winds) winds.

  My thoughts exactly! These pieces are probably some of the most expensive items from the biggest labels, but they managed to tie them all together and make the models look like the girls from the mountains of Tibet. Kudos to the stylist!

I dunno. This is when I realize maybe I don’t know that much about fashion, or have low-brow expectations, but I’m not completely sure what these clothes even look like. Maybe I just need editorials that look like the Sears catalog.

Ooog, I’m going to pass on this one. Inuits utilized fur and animal skins to protect against the cold and because there were no plants in their environment that could be made into textiles. Something about this sticks in my craw.

Love this! It’s gorgeous and really cool how they used modern pieces to evoke older (much older!) styles.

And although I’m sure I’ll be flamed for this – I love the look of fur. I love the plushness, the wild look, it’s softness. Aesthetically, I respond to it. I have a thing for plushy textures – boucle, cashmere, velvet, etc. Fur evokes that same response for me, most of the time.

    I have issues with the industry, which is why I refuse to buy, but that doesn’t make me hate fur itself. I’d love to find an ethical fur, where the animals are treated humanely (and preferably animals which are used for food, like rabbits).

      That’s what bothers me the most. I can’t help but think it’s largely because we consider fur animals cute, while chickens and cows aren’t as good at engaging our sympathies. I understand there are some differences in that sometimes fur animals do not also get used for meat and thereby part of their bodies is wasted (which would be ideal to me, if everything was used) but I can’t stomach it when the same people who are buying supermarket chicken are hand wringing over people wearing fur. This is pretty fascinating:

Also, when the fur is wild I think people don’t understand that some of those animals are considered nuisance populations and it is at times better for the ecosystem to remove the surplus. I’d rather those animals were used in some way than just discarded to rot.

  Funny, when I look at fur, all I see are the skins of creatures who were murdered by anal and genital electrocution. So on top of getting killed for no good reason what-so-ever, they were sexually violated first.
  
  But personally, I think if you don’t kill it yourself, you shouldn’t be allowed to wear or eat it.

This is a lovely but strange set of images. To my mind it evokes too vividly studio-based ethnographic images of the late 19th c (lots of these from Japan, showing for example real palanquin bearers posing with a palanquin, or a real, heavily tattooed mailman, in this type of small space decorated to evoke the appropriate landscape). I can’t look at these pictures and see fashion or wearable items at all. I just automatically assume that the furs smell high and the owners have been wearing them continually for weeks. Those boots look exactly right for hunting with an owl.

beautiful photos. i love the model in the seventh picture, she has a face like a china doll. i’m just like you, TLo, whining about the total lack of snow here. the last two winters have been exceptionally long and with heavy snowfall. last year our snow plow guy was in the hospital, and we had eight feet of powder in our driveway. i thought i was going to die in my driveway, trying to reach the house with no snow shoes. now here it is january, me with my new snowblower but NO SNOW. like you guys, i work at home so i can mostly admire the scenes outside my windows.

  It’s South Korea. They can wear fur just because, just like any other first world country. No one ate those foxes. They were raised for fur as foxes are. You can console yourself with wrong ideas about “Korea” if it makes you feel better about liking this, but those foxes did not die a natural death.

These models are stunning! They actually look like they are alive – which is more than you can say for a lot of models we typically see.

In the one where she’s holding the owl (third from the bottom), I feel like I look like that when I’m filling my backyard bird feeders. Sweat pants tucked into snow boots… 18 layers of coats and scarves, and my husband’s giant gloves. That said, she looks significantly more glamorous.
