Color? April’s in trouble.

Not as much trouble as Mila’s in. April can, upon occasion, offer up something in the scarlet/burgundy/blood range, but Mila’s entire color scheme is black, more black, white, grey, even more black, more grey, more white.

She got in trouble for that with her piggy dress; if she ignores the dictates of the challenge two weeks in a row, I don’t know how patient the judges will be with her. One is supposed to mind the opinions of one’s client, after all. Mila seems only able to mind her own opinions, and at some point, that’s going to get her in trouble, given the quality of competition she’s up against.

Well, I do think they’ve dumped the weakest, much as I adored Sweet P as a person. But… personally, I still don’t get Mila. I haven’t liked any of her dresses because they’re just all the same in a weird kind of way. I don’t think they particularly address the challenge–especially Miss Piggy. The remaining designer who has been on the bottom a lot is maybe April.

So…while I’d love to see Mila depart, I’m guessing it’ll be April getting the auf today. Judges just don’t get her perspective, I guess. And she is very dark…

I really like Mila’s work, but I agree: I don’t think she’s terribly well-suited to PR. She doesn’t really seem to respond well to working within the dictates of specific challenges.

Very tough indeed.

I say it’s between Kara, Austin (only if he doesn’t get the editing prior) and… I don’t know. Jerrel and Kenley can pull great things unnexpectedly and Michael has proven to be a wildcard.

It would be a shock if Mondo or Rami happen to land in the bottom.

  Honestly, he doesn’t surprise me at all. I felt he showed a lot of promise during his season — his work wasn’t terribly original and his construction skills were somewhat lacking. But based on his comments at the time, I got the feeling that he just hadn’t had the time to mature as a designer. Most people start out in one of two ways: a) they copy things that they find beautiful without realizing it OR b) they make things that haven’t been done for good reason, like it’s ugly, unflattering or unwearable.

      I know, I am happy to see so much conviviality in their apartment (what they show us anyway) as well as in the workroom. There’s some nagging, yes, but not the immature, flat-out bullying we saw during his and Mondo’s season. That can do wonders for one’s performance.

      I think the validation from both the judges and his experiences since has probably helped immensely. He took a lot of flak from his family about designing and it takes time and a lot of voices to outweigh that.

  Well, IIRC, that was a stupid stereotype meant to belittle Michael. Remember the episode when Mondo had to work with him and called him out for being a bad sewer, and halfway into the challenge he apologized and said he was wrong? That’s why I love Mondo so much. He sees people as they are. Yes, he listened to the stereotypes, but he didn’t let it determine his entire interaction with Michael, and now they’re very good friends!

I thought he showed promise in his season, particularly in his final collection. His construction skills were never as bad as the college-educated mean girls (Gretchen, Ivy and April) made out and he had a great eye for fabric. But as the judges pointed out last time he had definite ‘taste issues’ and it must have knocked his confidence terribly week on week to have his skills continually questioned. This time round he’s had his confidence boosted by being chosen as an ‘All Star’, he’s broadened his horizons away from Palm Springs inthe last year or two and I think hanging out with Mondo has really helped him with his styling, presentation and probably technique too…

  I think technique is the big one — some people really need a person in front of them to show them how to do something specific instead of just instructions. It can be hard to find someone who can do that for you at the level he needs, especially if you can’t go the formal instruction route.

I’m going to go with April, Kara, or Jerrel for the boot tonight–even though they’ve all been floating safely in the middle, and each of them is capable of pulling a pretty nicely dressed rabbit out of a hat. With only six hours to work, Kara and April are in big trouble, because they tend to have time issues and also tend to freak out. Michael C. has a big advantage, because he’s usually finished hours before anyone else.

Boyz, I’m sad that you’re still sick. Have you been swilling chicken soup and juice like mama told you to do?

Can I just say….I really don’t dislike the new host, but she enunciates so heavily it feels like it takes 10 minutes to announce the challenge these days. I sort of miss Heidi just casually telling them what they were doing.

Last night, I went out with a friend for his birthday and got a LOT of free shots by association. One of them was bright red, and tasty. I’d like some more of those. I would enjoy drinking a colorful drink, while in the colorful bar, watching colorful dresses and judges!

was it a jello shot? jello made with vodka instead of water in a shot glass, they’re popular in mexican discos and in vegas. there’s also something called a “panty dropper” that’s bright pink. but each bartender seems to make it differently. much as different guys have different approaches to making your panties drop…anyways…

Incidentally, I’ve also been thinking how fun and wacked out it would be to have a challenge where the designers were asked to make the most hideous dress possible. Rules: the model must walk down the runway in something relatively modest (no lady parts or butt cleavage showing), and the designer must be able to explain their inspiration…no “Oh, I just threw this together.” Heck…the models must be able to walk down the runway, period, so nothing obstructing gait. It would never happen, but how fun would it be? Just imagine the judges trying to come up with critiques.

As for going home, judging only from what I’ve seen here, since I don’t watch the show, I’d guess April. I love her dearly, but bright colors aren’t really her thing and from what I remember the judges aren’t always into her aesthetic.

I was never a fan of her tortured, black aesthetic, but I’m really not like what she has been putting out this season. Perhaps it’s in response to the parameters of the challenges, if so I hope a make a pretty dress challenge shakes things up. If not, she can go.

April always strikes me as being the prime example of the critique: “She’s not ready.” Her clothes always remind me of a guy I went to high school with that was always talking about Nirvana and how depressed he was — while I was actually in treatment for it and taking it seriously, he was using it as way to get attention.

      a lemon drop is always good if you you like sweet drinks. they’ll get you there quick, too. the thought of sweet wine all night reminds me of my first drunk, freshman year in college in the dorms we drank a gallon of gallo cream sherry. oh my god, you talk about a headache. speaking of vitamin c, my health food drink is a cuba libre. coke for the caffeine and blood sugar kick, rum for the alcohol, and lime for the vitamin c. perfect restorative when shopping in puerto vallarta.

    I always do something very sweet — I hate the taste of booze. A particular favorite of mine is a White Russian… tastes like chocolate milk. And it keeps me from drinking too many when that’s a goal. I also do vodka tonics with a double twist, for those same occasions. Otherwise, I do sweet wines if I really want to drink all night.
    
    Personally, I always assume that what I drink is what the cool people drink ’cause I’m that awesome ;P

I think that in honor of the random subthread that completely made my week, I have to start things off with a PBR. We’ve got this great new burger place in town, and they’ve got PBR on tap. Last weekend I was sitting at the bar, enjoying my food and Buffalo Sweat, and I saw a woman approach and ask for a sample of PBR. I was out of earshot, so I have no idea how that came about, but there you are. I watched as she tried it, and then made the face–exactly the one you’d expect from an unsuspecting suburbanite tasting PBR. I confess to laughing with delight at the expression, because I am a terrible person.

  I don’t get it either. Rami should have won the Pig challenge, for sure. The opera dress? It could have gone either way. But this one? No way. And the judges kept saying how the color seemed wrong but Michael had said that was the color of the gelato. But it wasn’t–the gelato was pale yellow, and he was disappointed that it wasn’t the color of red grapefruit.

    Oh, no, these were perfectly well made caftans. They were still ugly because… caftans are ugly. Too much material, not enough shape. Even well made ones look like bedsheets or, at best, bathrobes, to me. I can see that they would be comfortable, and are very useful in some climates (like where it’s very hot and you don’t want anything binding, but you also don’t want to expose your skin to the sun). But attractive? Nyet. I’m tired of PR trying to push them, which makes me actively hostile to them (I often feel that way about ugly fashions they want to push, like exposed zippers or that horrible, flat bleached hair that so many stars sport).

      But unlike the leisure suit, I maintain that a caftan can work. I think it needs the right hand on the machine during construction and the right body afterward, but it can be done.

I know, I know, it’s about fashion, it doesn’t have to be particularly functional or utilitarian. Except when you want someone to wear it, it kinda does. I had one kid who HATED bottles and I appreciated clothes that made me feel good that also allowed me to not develop a splitting headache from her banshee-level screams. (Kid still has a set of lungs to rival the finest opera divas) From her perspective, I think that’s a valid reason.

Again, though, haven’t seen it yet, so if it wasn’t EXPRESSLY stated that the garment needed to take those needs into consideration, it probably should not have played such a part in the win decision.

No–I heard her objecting to Michael’s because it would not allow her to protect from leaks. She couldn’t wear anything under it, whereas Mondo’s would allow a bit of protective padding. So that was a count against Michael’s. Though probably by this time she has finished. Maybe that’s why they delayed airing the season .

      Gotcha. And that’s a fair, valid point. I get really REALLY irate with the self-taught Anyas of PR, personally. Because they make all of us look bad! I have NEVER allowed a garment that was improperly cut or constructed to leave my hands and there is no way I would ever allow some of the nonsense that she sent out to see the light of day — and you’re talking to a woman who still eliminates puckering at the seams with a hand steamer and flat iron (I know there’s a way of doing it correctly, but this is cheap, easy, and it works…)
      
      I do think April has some serious growing to do, and there are people there who have a better sense of what they’re doing. But I can see your point.

      And yeah, I get that when you’re on a deadline, you may not have time to fix a mistake — but producer mandated deadlines aren’t all that different than someone just needing it done by a certain time. What’s so different between Anya having to have her final collection ready to walk by X date at X time and me having to have my dress for a friend’s wedding done by X date at X time?

      Not much difference between the two at all. Dresses or taxes, runway show or wedding gown- it needs to be done when it needs to be done. All a matter of planning the best you can, having a routine for the basic parts so the complicated stuff isn’t rushed. Something will always go wrong at the last minute. Example- my wedding. We forgot to reinforce the veil’s attachment to the comb, it was a windy day, and we had no thread. Broke out the superglue, but between shaky hands and shaking bride…my veil got glued to my head (not just the hair…my actual scalp). There’s a better metaphor, i’m sure, just can’t think of one right now!

In his entire time on PR, Michael has won four challenges, five if you count that one where April was eliminated in season eight – they never announced a clear winner there.

I have not agreed with a single damn one of them. I didn’t think they were aufable, but every single one of them was derivative and done before, except for the Treacy hat one, which was just… bizarre, and poorly fitted.

  In season’s past when the prize was either wearing the garment to an event or for a spread we got to see photos of the designer fitting the ‘star’ for their event or at the photo shoot so I would have expected to see her fitting.

Sorry to go against the flow, but Michael’s was amazingly constructed, draped well, and was in horribly hard to work with satin. Mondo’s was prettier, but I think DVF pulled a lot of weight with this one.

I may be a sucker for buying is “Oh my gosh” shtick, but I like Michael, and have been rooting for him like crazy!

And personally am amazed that in 6 hours, these entries (Except April’s) looked amazingly better than ANYTHING crafted during the “Season of which we no longer speak”.

Personal feelings about the look aside, Michael didn’t even really follow the challenge. He got grapefruit gelato, and from what I can tell, he just picked a pink fabric (the *wrong* pink, mind you) and did whatever he felt like.

They are doing the same thing with Michael that they did in his original season. They overpraise all of his designs and give him some inexplicable wins. Then, at the end (he had to compete to make fasion week if I reacall…) they suddenly discover TASTE ISSUES!

On the other hand, the judging is at least giving good feedback to other designers, Mila is getting feedback to use color. Anthonly is being told not to make everything so overwrought. So the judging is certainly better than last season.

  It’s too bad that April’s had the issues that it did, because if it hadn’t I think the color and the short flirty construction would have worked quite well for Miranda k. As a model, she’s got long legs that would have showed nicely in that dress with the bright color, whereas michaels dress seems to cover up quite a bit. I had forgotten that April is only 22, so she does have time to grow as a designer.

What surprised me is that dress was part of the collection that should have won Season 2. I liked that dress.

But all of a sudden this look is chopped liver. The execution was a bit sloppy and it looked bulkier, mind you.

As a woman who is breastfeeding, I have to say, I understand the lure of a caftan with easy boob access. That fabric looked sooo soft and smooth. The only thing is I hope she’s not leaky, because that fabric would not forgive milk stains. Bravo to Miranda Kerr for plugging breast feeding. She looks so rosy-cheeked and amazing. Motherhood suits her.

That said, some of the criticisms tonight were pretty ridiculous. Michael should have used georgette, they didn’t like fabric choices, several of them look rushed.. well, duh. They had to pick from a very small selection of fabric AND they had 6 hours. Give them a break.

Bravo to her for plugging breastfeeding, but I gotta say, if “I could totally breastfeed in that” was going to be part of the judging criteria, it would only be fair to give, um, a heads up to the designers. Otherwise it’s a pretty random way to choose one design over the other. How would they know that should be a consideration?

The way I interpreted her comment, it was not which dress would allow breastfeeding access but, precisely, which dress would allow her to wear some kind of protection from leakage. She was saying that Michael’s would be a problem that way.

I’m glad one of the judges commented on Mila’s dress where the white was over the red. That caught my eye as soon as it came out, and not in a good way. The stark white and bright red made a good contrast but that muddied white over the red brought it way down.

I loved Mondo’s canteloupe dress and I HATE cantelope! I would have given him the win. But I like these judges so much better than The Great Pumpking, The Great Bitch Queen, and The Great German Divorcee, that I am not going to complain!

I’m not crazy about the win. I thought Mondo should have won. (I’m a Micheal fan too!) I agree that April should have left, I had her in the offing soon. Her confidence was shaking.

I will give Michael credit though. With a little more finishing, the dress would be pretty amazing. But when I think of grapefruit, I think slightly tart with an edge. Maybe he was thinking summer fruit, fragrant, refreshing and juicy flow. Maybe it’s in the interpretation of what a person thinks of.

I’m still trying to get the idea of Anthony’s green tea. Did he imagine the skirt as a filter bag for tea? I’m not trying to be mean, I’m trying to understand it because that would make a little sense.

To me, the folding on the bodice of Anthony’s dress had a very Japanese vibe to it — part of it reminded me of an origami fan, and when I have a chance to look at the photos more closely I’m sure I’ll see other recognizable shapes there as well. The biggest problem with it, I thought, was that it was, once again, overworked. Although why Georgina Throw-Everything-At-It-Marchesa feels she has ANY moral high ground to criticize someone else’s overworking is definitely a mystery!

I thought that it was a pretty big toss up between April and Kara for the off, but April put the good china on display. However, Kara’s dress was a copy of her finale collection from her season and if the judges had been clued on to that, I bet she’d have gone home instead.
I know that many don’t like caftans but both Michaels and Mondos dresses had considerably more structure than a classic caftan and included waist and back details that were very flattering.

Fastest seamstress, but also fastest designer. Because they had to be able to come up with a design quickly and it had to be something executed quickly. (Though I don’t personally know any designer who doesn’t have plenty of things floating in their head that they could draw upon in such a situation….)

So we still haven’t had a female crack the top 2 or a male hit the bottom 2, have we? That is really sad.

The judging seemed to be all about “What would Barbara Stanwyck wear?” (Or, you know, Lana Turner, as Caaro3 said. I can definitely see Lana wearing Michael’s with a matching turban, right before she offs Johnny Stompanato.) Sorry, but Michael’s was no grapefruit color I’ve seen, and I thought sure the gelato and napkin he was handed were pale yellow, not pink. His was the color of strawberry ice cream. Plain old strawberry from the big square carton from the freezer case. The cheapest kind.

I liked the shape of Mila’s, but not the way the red peeked through the white. Plus I was hoping for a deep cherry red, not the scarlet she chose. I barely saw Rami’s, Jerrell’s, Austin’s or Kenley’s, although I do recall Kenley’s being a horrid shade of pink and the same skirt she always does.

I loved Mondo & Michael’s dresses, even though they were in colors I usually despise. I love DvF and her wit. I wonder if she wants to see Michael as a potential employee, or as a nice appetizer.

Kara and April were clearly in deep tulle, if you get my drift. Personally I would have sent Kara home. Any time you can make a woman who is 6′ and 90 lbs look like she’s in her last trimester, you have problems.

Didn’t care for either Mondo’s or Michael’s. How Jerrell managed to escape being in the bottom two is beyond me. The idea that a dress that looks “maternity” can’t be attractive is ridiculous. As has been mentioned, that Kara dress has been seen before — my problem with it had to do with the colors — the murky browns and red were pretty unattractive.

I have nothing against breastfeeding at all, and have experienced it myself, but, honestly, Miranda, too much information. And all the comment did was reinforce that Michael’s dress looked like an over-elaborate nightgown. Less Lana Turner than Carol Burnette doing a Lana imitation.

I agreed with Isaac that Mondo’s was heavy and unflattering.

I did it myself without hangups — though I kept myself covered — for a very long time. It’s fine for her to want to point out that it’s on her list of things to think about–although I thought it was trite and self-promoting–but I kind of doubt that Michael C himself, once he moved past kissing her tushy, would want Mrs. Orlando Bloom suckling her child in his gown. I wish they would give them two day challenges, and let them really make what they are capable of making. Six hours? Give me a break! What can you really create in six hours? I am officially done with Michael. It isn’t that I think his clothes are bad. They are made much better than some other PR alums from the season we shall never mention again. It isn’t about his inexplicable ability to crank out a dress in no time with no issues whatsoever. I just find his “surprise face” both annoying and disingenuous. It seems really fake to me and I actually dread his confessional time. It makes me cringe. I realize this is an irrational hate but if I can’t tell you all who can I tell.

On a more important note… loved Mondo’s dress and I found Kenly’s (though it was almost exactly what I expected) really cute and well made.

I’m pretty sure April got the faux-auf over Kara because of her really poor construction. That’s been a big problem all season. She could have done herself a big favor and pull back on design elements in order to focus more on clean construction, but she’s just not mature enough as a designer yet for that, I’m afraid. And I didn’t blame Kara for pulling something out of her memory that she’d done before — with only 6 hours, I’m just surprised more of them didn’t do that (and we don’t really know how many did at this point).

I have to admit that I loved Michael’s pink grapefruit dress….but man, I wanted to eat a slice of Mondo’s cantaloupe! Mondo’s was the only dress on that stage that spoke to me in terms of taste as well as color — which is pretty amazing, that he could make me literally salivate over fabric. That said, Michael’s dress was gorgeously draped; he’s really refined his style since he was last on and seems far more confident with his design abilities. And he is SO fast, which is a skill that has to be a massive help. I think the only other person on PR who sewed as fast as he does is Christian; I wonder what he would have done with this challenge? Probably turned out an intricate couture gown or something.

And I definitely got the impression that DVF is interested in hiring Michael. At least I hope that’s what she wants him for…

Re. Kara’s use of one of her own designs… and Joanna’s Cole’s comment (to April?) about not just doing something she has done before–the judge is DVF, who is still doing the same thing she started doing in the 70s. If ever there was a judge who would be kind to variations on past triumphs, it should be Diane.

Michael’s dress looked exactly like an evening gown version of this cute little cocoon dress I bought at The Limited, so I almost choked when Isaac said he felt like he saw it before. This win belonged to Mondo for me, as Michael’s was well made but not at all creative. Mila was my second choice.

The problem with this challenge was the ridiculous 6-hr timeline. Naturally, the fastest designer won. That Michael crafted that dress in 6 hrs was astounding. It wasn’t an especially impressive dress otherwise, but I would agree with his win. Mondo is my absolute favorite and the horse I’m backing for the big win, but I thought his dress for this challenge was unflattering, although fine for second place because everything else on the runway was so wretched. Six hours?!?! Why?!?!? What a missed opportunity…especially for the All Stars. I want to see they can do…and they can’t do much of anything in 6 hours, for goodness sake. It’s a test of nothing but speed. And who cares about speed?

From reading the comments, I feel like people are not getting why Michael won over Mondo. It’s because Miranda Kerr just had a baby when this episode was filmed. She wants to be in something soft and comfortable, with easy breastfeeding access. That is a perfectly valid criteria for selection. If the contestants knew that about Miranda, then Michael made a smart choice in making something that would be comfortable, easy to wear, and wouldn’t require disrobing in order to nurse. I have been there (recently), and my wardrobe selections were vastly curtailed when I had a child under 1 year. There is something to be said for catering this specifically to the client, irrational Michael-hatred entirely aside.

No, she did not like Michael’s because it does not allow her to include a means of preventing leaks. She is not going to breast-feed at an “industry event.” But if she has to have nude nipples she had better have pumped herself dry first. Mondo’s would have worked better for her, but they ignored that preference, and it doesn’t matter because they postponed the show so thoroughly she’ll probably have finished the leaky stage by the time she wears it.

I just want to say this and say this once — I breast fed my only child, a boy, for almost three years between 95 and 97 and got endless amounts of grief over taking it that long. He needed it — I gave it to him and we both survived it and are the better for it.

I don’t tune into Project Runway to listen to grade Z models discuss their childrearing needs and preferences.

The show needs to get its shit together and stop inviting guest judges that confuse their situations with passing judgment on the clothes — pure and simple.
