Style Showdown: Cate vs. Reese in Louis Vuitton
Sometimes we watch E!’s Fashion Police with some amusement – and not because Joan said something funny. No, it’s because they’re often covering looks we covered days before, so sitting down to watch the show has become a sort of television retrospective of our week. There’s a lot about red carpet commentary that doesn’t actually work that well in the medium of television, especially in a panel setting. It’s a form of celebrity commentary that practically requires bitchy one-liners and too often anything interesting about the conversation gets drowned out by a lot of shrieking and one-upsmanship. We guess what we’re saying is, Fashion Police is mildly entertaining, but it’s not how we would have done it.
On the other hand, we will never stop being jealous that they came up with a great feature and gave it a great name: “Bitch Stole My Look,” which compares two celebrities in the same outfit. Oh, how we wish we’d thought of that one.
Granted, most stars wear the same outfit sometimes months and even years apart, which makes comparing them a somewhat less than current conversation topic. Not everyone gets excited that the dress Starlet A wore this week was also worn by Starlet B three years ago at the Emmys or something. But every once in a while, the stars will align, and not only do 2 ladystars wear the same outfit in the same week, but they’re also two wildly different ladies in terms of their style and thus the garment winds up looking completely different on each of them.

Interesting, right? And so very Cate. It looks like a pullover over a set of petticoats. We’re not entirely sure we like this on her (and we HATE the shoes), but let’s, as Valerie Cherish might say, put a pin in that for a second.

TOTALLY DIFFERENT DRESS, AMIRITE? Except … totally not? It’s astonishing what a belt, a different color, and an entirely different person inside can do to a garment.

We have to say, of the two of them, Cate got this one more right than wrong. We don’t think this is a dress that lends itself to zhuzhing; you either wear it as is or you don’t wear it at all. Slapping a belt on it makes it look a little awkward and besides, we really don’t like that emerald green color at all. We think the dress is odd and definitely not our favorite, but of the two of them, Cate wins this one, hands down. You, as always, get the final say.
Who wore it best? Cate or Reese?
