Elizabeth Olsen for ASOS Magazine

Elizabeth Olsen has exactly two modeling expressions and you get to see both of them in this shoot for ASOS.

Elizabeth Olsen featured in the March 2012 issue of ASOS magazine photographed by Todd Cole and styled by Zeba Lowe.

MiH aztec jacket and Elizabeth & James striped silk ella blouse on the cover. She wears an ASOS long sleeve breton top inside.

To be fair, she gives good sound bite – and the clothes are cute. Besides, this is basically a catalogue shoot using a famous face. We wouldn’t expect her to serve up supermodel face when she’s flogging cute indie-girl clothes.

“I did lead a very charmed life growing up, but I was aware of the things that were abnormal. The only time I flew first-class as a kid was when my sisters did these cruises called ‘Sail With The Stars.’ They were the main event…other than that, never.”

On her famous last name:
“A lot of casting directors didn’t make the connection at first. I loved it when that would happen, because there was no baggage of any kind, whether it was good or bad…I’ve always wanted to feel like everything I did, I worked hard for, because I had a complex about it.”

On Martha Marcy May Marlene:
“Every script (I was sent) was ‘funny ironic’ because the girls were sluts or bitches…I don’t know how to act that. I have a really hard time playing those parts. (Martha) felt like doing real work, and that’s why I liked it…it was the best experience I’ve ever had working…no bullshitting.”

Most surreal career moment so far:
Meeting her idol Woody Allen. “I have a vintage Annie Hall movie poster that an ex-boyfriend bought me in high school, the only movie poster I own.”
On her famous family:
“Mary-Kate and Ashley have celebrated my birthday with me every year since I’ve been in New York, my last four birthdays, and it’s been so special. Or when you have a fight with a boyfriend or a friend, or whatever, they’re here.”

On being the Elizabeth in her sisters’ clothing line Elizabeth & James:
“In my mind, that was, ‘Oh cool, that means I get free clothes!’ For two years, I didn’t buy anything. But even as a little kid…I had all their hand-me-downs.

On her style:
Inspired by Celine, Chanel, Isabel Marant and Marni – “I thought it was masculine and quirky and funky.”

I didn’t know ASOS had a magazine – I thought it was just flimsy knock-offs of designer stuff. Anyhoo, she’s very cute and I don’t know why I am always disappointed that actresses are crap models (surely they can act like good models?) but I am.

  I don’t know . . . my interpretation is that she’s saying she doesn’t like playing those roles, because they’re misogynist stereotypes and she just can’t get behind that. She held out for the MMMM role because it’s meatier and more real. I grant you, that’s reading a lot into it, but there are valid reasons to not want to be cast in a bitch/slut role, and there are valid reasons for not wanting to give those reasons candidly in an interview.

It’s funny because she looks so much like her sisters in her red carpet pictures, but not so much here (or where she was dressed as Liz Taylor).
The clothes are fug, though.

  Interesting, I read her comment in that the scripts were sort of slut shaming and whatnot with those tired stereotypes of women, but trying to wrap it up in the guise of “funny ironic” and she didn’t care for it.

I’ve never heard her speak so I have this voice I’ve made up for her in my head. It sounds something like this, “Ah mah gaaaash, the butteflahs flew away.” It’s a voice that happens when you never close your maaahth. The clothes are kind of sickeningly juvenile for a grown woman.
