True story: We’ve been sitting on this post for days now. Not because it’s explosive or that it required a lot of work, but because Tom was somewhat agressively ambivalent about featuring her. He doesn’t hate her, the way half the internet seems to, but…

“She’s … I don’t know… bland.”

“But she looks great here!”

“I think she’s more use to us as bitchy fashion bloggers when she wears something from her vast collection of oversized coats.”

“Yeah, but Joe styled her and he did a fabulous job! Again! Just hold something over her face and look at the clothes.”

“…

Ok, yes. She does look pretty great.”

On her public perception:“I’ve never really been America’s sweetheart… I had ’em for a second thinking maybe I was. And then I opened my mouth, and it was very clear I wasn’t. There’s so much of my mother’s caustic, sarcastic, irreverent take on things. But I also love and embrace it.”

On dealing with the demands of Hollywood: “I overdramatize. And I think everything is at stake—my life, my career, my family, everything is at stake if this movie doesn’t do well.”

On seeking approval: “I’m just that asshole who really wants everyone to like me, and it’s a ridiculous goal and it’s an impossible goal. But I think if I just keep pushing forward and showing myself through and through, they will see me again for what I really am and not what has been sort of spun about me.”

Tear the above quotes apart. As we said, we (because Lorenzo feels the same way) aren’t particularly invested either way. She grates sometimes, but not enough to get a spot on our Celebrities We Irrationally Hate list. Bottom line: we don’t watch rom-coms. Like, at all. So most of her work has eluded us completely. We watched about a half hour of that one she did with Josh Duhamel where she had to raise Christina Hendricks’ baby and it was fine. Perfectly acceptable but totally not a movie we’d be interested in watching.

Anyway, Joe Zee knocked it out of the park on the styling. She’s made for big chunky necklaces and winter whites. And this is the first time in ages her hair has looked young and sexy.

She does look fabulous here. The quotes are interesting, if you like ping pong. In her response to half the internet hating her: “I tried to be America’s sweetheart, but I’m really an asshole [her word] and people need to accept that. But I want everyone to love me and see that I’m not an asshole.”

At least, that’s how I read it. Not really invested in loving or hating her, but she has that Paltrow quality of seeming just so damned pleased with herself most of the time.

      I’ve never had the feeling that she’s not authentic, although I haven’t followed her closely, so you could be right. When I think inauthentic, I think of Ashley Judd, whose every word sounds planned and phony. She’s very high on my list of Celebrities I Irrationally Hate.
      
      I’ve always been so taken with how beautiful Heigl is, starting with her role in Roswell, that I can’t seem to get past it. On the other hand, my god, she makes crappy movies.

  I think she’s a hypocrite because she made Knocked Up, complained about it being antifeminist, and then followed it up with 27 Dresses and The Ugly Truth. And then these quotes only reinforce the general sentiment that she has no grasp of consistency in her statements. I get that most of Hollywood is super fake, but her PR team must be terribly at odds with itself.

Heigl is a genuinely talented actress, even in otherwise throw-away rom-coms. It is a shame she has started dressing like Joan Collins in real life. Agreed her hair and everything else looks much better here than it has in forever. Joe Zee needs to style her full time.

  I’m ambivalent on her (haven’t seen any of her movies). But I feel sorry for any actress trying to make Rom Coms these days. The scripts are horrible! Why is it so hard? 1. Appealing girl 2. Appealing guy 3. Heavily manufactured reason why they can’t get togehter which is ultimately overcome 4. Witty dialogue….

Well done Joe Zee – this is the first time Heigl has looked remotely likeable. The way she is styled is fantastic, I loved every photo and am coveting all the clothes. Mission accomplished!

The way she dealt with Greys was immature and entitled. Then she got some decent roles in movies that put her firmly on the map – and she had to open her big mouth again. Don’t Be A Dick – and the public won’t hate you. Full stop.

You’re rich, famous and you’re beautiful. Good for you! Own it. Do something with it. Then you can be that asshole that actually made a difference or helped people. And we’ll love you for it and defend you being an asshole.

  See, Kristen Stewart I sincerely feel for — I think she’s just really awkward, and I sympathize. Katherine Heigl, on the other hand, is a moron, and one who doesn’t accept that she is. I don’t watch Grey’s Anatomy, so I really have little to say on that other than that anyone who gets to work with Patrick Dempsey should be thrilled (he’s on my Irrational Love list).

      But she’s done the same thing REPEATEDLY. I wouldn’t care if she wanted to be a total bitch about everyone she’s ever worked with — in fact, it would make her far more interesting to me — but if you want to be that honest, don’t be shocked when people think you suck. Whether true or not, whether fair or not, almost 100 years of Hollywood history should have shown you that.
      
      And frankly, she’s not good enough to get by with it. Women who have been that difficult to work with and stayed relevant have been INCREDIBLE actesses — Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn, Barbra Streisand. She’s none of the above.
      
      Also, comparing Heigl’s DELIBERATE comments TO THE PRESS about people she’s worked with and projects she’s done to Alec Baldwin’s or Christian Bale’s reasonably assumed PRIVATE conversations is unfair. The better example would be Shia LeBouf and his comments re: Transformers 2 and Indiana Jones 4. And yeah, I think he’s a douche for it. I’m of a mind with Harrison Ford on this one: you agree to make a movie, you give the absolute best performance you can give, and then you go out and do press and give everything you’ve got to making that movie a success. Because THAT’S what you said you’d do when you took the part. Slamming a movie for being sexist crap is not doing that.

KH looks great here, and yes–winter white suits her well. Her hair is the best it’s ever looked. But–is the 80s re-do where we’re going now, in fashion, I mean? (That last look with the hair and the necklace could have come straight outta an episoed of Falcon Crest…) While I disliked all the 70s hippie junk I’ve seen the last few years–I’ll totally hate it if the 80s inspire new fashion–the clothes then were cheap, sleazy and unflattering. *shudder*

Man, Tahari’s been making a great slightly sexy day/basic (depending how you wear it) cocktail dress forever, no? I have one (Georgetown Junior Women’s League Thrift Shop, an effing *steal*) I bought 25 +? years ago that I wore till everyone but me was sick of it. It may be time to see if I can revive it, it was an oddity of its time in not having giant shoulder pads.

She reminds me of this insufferably irritating girl who was in some of my college classes, so that’s the basis of my irrational hatred of her. The best pictures here are the black and white ones where, coincidentally, she looks least like herself.

the only movie of hers i can watch is ’27 dresses’ and that has more to do with james marsden than Katherine the grate (typo and it stays). that being said, i think she looks fantastic here, the lighting and makeup really complement her fair skin and hair. kudos to team elle.

I like it but I also don’t. And those quotes? Now I get why she did 27 Dresses and the Ugly Truth after what she said about Knocked Up. Guess she wanted people to like her more than she wanted to stick to her guns. Sad. I don’t irrationally hate her. I like her movies well enough, even though they’re filled with the kind of people that make me hope the apocalypse is coming soon.

Maybe it’s because I just (re)watched the first season of MadMen, but in the first b&w she reminds me of Jackie O and the second, she reminds me of Marilyn. Agreed, the styling is perfect.
