Faceoff: Marie Claire January 2012 Cover Girls

We did it for the boys last week and that proved so popular that we’re forcing the ladies into a face-giving cage match. Once again, our question is simple:

Who is giving the best face on the January 2012 Marie Claire cover?

Jolie’s bringing her A-game, but it’s perhaps a bit too intense for Marie Claire. Binoche looks over it, Rowland looks INSANE, and Witherspoon looks depressed. It’s not a bad picture of Scarlett, but it’s a bit too reminiscent of her Cosmo cover, right down to the pose and the purple lace dress. For us, the clear winner here is Cameron Diaz. She’s lighting up that cover even if the lighting itself is kind of flat and Polaroid-y and her eyes look a bit unfocussed.

I think Reese’s is the best photograph, best pose and best cover design combination.

As for Angelina, I’m really surprised they used that picture because she’s not really looking into the lens, but rather right above it. And with a cover of this type, they always want the subject to be looking into the lens to connect with the (potential) reader. And the 100-mile stare is kind of weird.

The covers from the UK and Australia look pretty amateurish. And the French cover isn’t too flattering. Juliette Binoche is A LOT prettier than that picture makes her look – and the colors aren’t too great.

So it’s gotta be Reese for the win.

  In complete agreement. I was drawn to Reese’s cover, she looks different than usual, but fresh and fun. Jolie is stunning but the eyes ruin it in this photo. They seem kind of creepy to me, in fact, I think they’re following me around the room.

Between that and the 100-mile stare, it’s like she’s trying to convince someone out there that she can still play Ophelia. She WAS never better than when playing bat-shit crazy adolescents….

It may be a bit over the top for Marie Claire, but if you were walking down the aisle and saw that picture, you would stop. That’s what they want. I love it.

Reese’s is also great. Cameron’s isn’t bad. I wonder if Scarlett puts in her contract that she must wear purple dresses and have shit hair…why else would 2 separate magazines do this to her on purpose?

Binoche for the win. Again, I say it’s all in the eyes. Juliette looks like a real live human being with thoughts and opinions.

The rest of them simply don’t. There’s no there there. Combine that with the open mouth pout that ScarJo and AnJo have and you have a pair of creepy blow up dolls. Ugh. Gross.

As for Diaz, well if anyone other than Terry Richardson had taken the picture, I’d give her the crown for that smile alone. But that pervert’s overlit style is so played out – and everything about him skeeves me out – that I refuse to praise anything associated with him. Sorry, Cammy. Pick a better photographer next time.

I disagree so much. Cameron’s eyes are completely wonky, her hair is flat, and no matter how much they insist on putting her in red, I just don’t think it’s a good color for her.
I think Witherspoon looks very pretty. Not fierce or anything, but pretty.
Scarlett looks sexy as usual, but she always gives the same face.
The clear winner for me is Jolie. To me, she’s jumping off the page and everything from makeup, hair and the color of her outfit is perfect.

Juliette Binoche looks exhausted. More makeup, please. Cameron Diaz looks like her usual happy, friendly self. Reese Witherspoon looks adorable here, and I usually don’t think she is at all attractive, so I say she wins. The others are just too movie-starrish for this magazine.

Juliette looks way more depressed than Reese. Angelina looks way more crazier than Kelly (tho the “I feel so GRRR” doesn’t help). Scarlett’s looks like a redo of that awful other thing, but that doesn’t make this good. Cameron’s looks like the test shot right before the cover shot-that-shoulda-been. It’s kind of a sad lot, unfortunately.
But for purposes of a magazine cover, presumably to connect with potential buyers, I gotta say Reese, even if she’s sort of phoning it in. At least she’s looking right out, and seems like a “relatable” woman (which I think is the Marie Claire type).

I think I have to give it to Witherspoon. All the other covers have something forced or weird about them, and hers is the most relate-ably and naturally beautiful, which I think is best for Marie Claire, isn’t it? I’d put Jolie as a very close second to Witherspoon.

Rowland’s eye makeup looks like it was done with a jumbo-sized Sharpie. Binoche looks exhausted. Diaz’s and Johannson’s expressions look really forced to me.

Angie for the win! I’m surprised you guys went for a Terry Richardson shot (even if the reasons you liked it have nothing to do with him). I agree that Rowland looks crazy–like she’s just stumbling in from a long night on the town and needs one last cocktail. re. Cameron–I think it’s the red dress. I went through the supermarket checkout line half an hour ago and almost bought not only Vogue with Gaga in red on the cover, but Essence with Latifah–both in red. Also I think the way Diaz is cropped looks good. Not overwhelming, not too sensual. Just fun.

Reese FTW. I’m a sucker for winter white, and I love the makeup. Angie looks like she wants to eat my brain, Cameron looks like the Joker’s daughter, I dig Kelly’s dress but the makeup is AWFUL, and ScarJo looks better as a strawberry blonde than a straight-up redhead, which is odd, because for the longest time I thought she was like Nicole Kidman – a natural redhead who blonded herself for reasons unknown and stupid.

As for Binoche, she and Julianne Moore occupy this weird subset of women who are absolutely gorgeous and yet almost always look terrible when called upon to stand around in clothes. Baffling.

Angelina looks so amazing just being herself that I sort of have to give her the win. A close second is Witherspoon. She looks down to earth, natural, and comfortable without being pose-y – which a real stride for her as she always looks so syrupy and posed.

The bigger the head, the more I like the picture. It’s an easy 1-2-3 ranking: Jolie, Witherspoon, Diaz, and the others not so much. The clothes are too blah to make an impact with the pose or body language, so the faces say it all.

Anyway, I like that they didn’t remove Cameron’s wrinkles in her cover, although doesn’t it seem like her body is too airbrushed? And doesn’t it seem like her waist is impossibly skinny?

Angelina’s photo is very flattering, but it looks like she’s a little too airbrushed.

I *love* Julliette’s photo – so cool. Doesn’t it look like she walked in off the street in that outfit, and they got the photo in one take?

To me, that is the ugliest photo of Angelina I’ve ever seen, and I’ve always considered her to be an extremely beautiful woman. If I have to vote for one of these, I’d go with Juliette. It’s not a stunning cover, but at least she looks like a real woman. And her performance in The English Patient is still one of my favorites.

angelina jolie, probably, cos she looks here like so many of the amazing 60s models–the ones who looked more like veruschka or paul mccartney’s girlfriend, not twiggy.

I disagree. Reese looks the most interesting – and her eyes are beautiful. Angie’s is gorgeous but she could be stuffed or made of wax, have her photo taken and she’d still look beautiful without trying.

Cameron does have that zillion dollar smile and gorgeous eyes, she almost always looks great on a cover. The fact she started her career as a model as opposed to the other actresses here doesn’t hurt. That said, I do love that photo of Reese, she looks beautiful.

The Angelina Jolie picture is striking, but almost *too* striking, in a slightly off-putting way. Kelly Rowland seems almost shy in that pic. I love how relaxed and confident Juliette Binoche looks, even if her picture is a bit on the low-key side. Cameron looks good. Scarlet looks like a blow-up doll. No thanks. My favorite is Reese.

1. Angelina J. is very intense, but gorgeous. But, she looks like she she might eat your brains or something. Scary, but gorgeous all the same.
2. Juliette B. is looking very “I’m too old for this shit.” Surely that wasn’t the BEST take for the cover.
3. Kelly R…. Kelly, Kelly, Kelly. Poor girl just can’t get right. That eye make up is HORRID. I cant tell what she looks like because there’s raccoon makeup on her face!
4. Cameron D. is giving me fun, fresh, sexy. Love it – she does, indeed, light up the cover.

Angelina wins by a long run, with Juliette in second place. Reese looks like an Olsen, Kelly’s makeup is tragic, Cameron’s face is a little harsh, and Scarlett’s hair and dress are lifeless.
