    X-Men. Totally X-Men: First Class. Why? First, because Magneto was always right, and a fascinating character in his own right — making anyone playing him well a bit more interesting. But more importantly, Fassbender spends a large chunk of the movie in the tightest costumes possible because a) superhero and b) men’s casual wear in the 60′s.

Pretty much agree with your assessments, but wow, it is surprising. Depp looks completely canned and bland; Pitt like a foggy dementia patient. … Two things I never thought I’d say about those guys!
I do applaud that it’s a roundup of all very masculine-yet-not-thuggish men, quite appropriate for GQ. Everyone is very stylish but not pretty, and look like average guys certainly could if they put in some effort (OK, maybe somewhat above average! But you know what I mean.))

Brad Pitt looks like a hospital patient, probably in the psych ward for depression. And Johnny Depp is doing something very weird with his face — the male equivalent for the bitchy PTA mom smile. I don’t approve.

Alex O’Loughlin looks stupid — not bad, but like he’s truly dim on an intellectual level. That’s not attractive. Joel Edgerton, I would love to give it to because he was in one of my favorite movies of all time, and he’s ALMOST there. But there’s something not quite up to par.

Which leaves us with Fassbender and Downey. Not a huge surprise as they are always on my top 5. Fassbender gets points for being one of my new fav actors, while Downey gets the sentimental points for having been the person I have loved most consistently through my life. The real tie breaker here, though, is Fassbender’s mustache. I’m sorry, Micheal, I know you had to do it for a part, but it’s simply hideous. Remove it — and everything else — and try again next month.

I’ve never been all that into either Pitt or Depp (Captain Jack aside), but I think these have to be blamed on the photographers. Yeesh. That lighting and makeup on Pitt make him look like a waxwork cro-Magnon from a small-town museum of natural history. I love the Downey picture, although the detail on the collar reads a really bad dandruff unless you’re looking closely… that’s not the kind of “rumpled” that any man should sport.

I actually love the Pitt cover. For all that everyone bitches about photoshop, that pictures has a lot of visible wrinkles and just experience etched on his face. Depp, trailing far behind in 2nd place. The way the cover is cropped, or maybe it’s just the close up, impairs something I normally enjoy about the proportions of his face & head.

This is going to get me shot, but…these are /all/ terrible with the possible exception of Fassbender which at least has some visual interest to it. Pitt looks like a hobo. Depp looks like they aged up a photo from 21 Jump Street back in the nineties to the point that if it wasn’t labelled, I wouldn’t recognize him. RDJ’s face looks like it has been reformed out of putty. And poor Joel Edgerton and Alex O’Loughlin have been photoshopped so hard that they belong in Madame Tussand’s. I was going to say Fassbender looked alright, then I scrolled back up to find him growing fungus on his face in a not-a-good-way. In short. WHAT THE HELL GQ?

Brad Pitt’s picture looks like a mug shot in a movie about a guy who goes to prison but then comes out a changed man. Who later reconnects with his son who is in the process of making some of the same poor life decisions that he made.

Michael Fassbender’s mustache is disturbing, yet I am still captivated. Forgive the pun, but the man just has a magnetic aura. Alex looks very polished and suave, and RDJ is adorable as always.

Tie between RDJ and Depp. Fassbender’s an automatic out for the pornstache. O’Loughlin looks plastic and Pitt looks homeless. I don’t know who Joel Edgerton is, but he looks like what you’d get if you took Alec Baldwin and Conan O’Brien and shook them together, and as awesome as both of those gentlemen are, their looks aren’t what makes them swoon-worthy.

RDJ has that insouciance he’s been working for the last few years; it really works for him, and since we can’t see his feet, we can assume he’s not wearing horrible sneakers with that suit. Depp, about whom I admit I am biased, only looks tired compared to his earlier self. Aside from Rob Lowe, I cannot think of another actor in Hollywood who is more likely to have an aging portrait in his attic; the fact that he now looks about 40 when he’s a) almost 50 and b) lived the life he’s led, is amazing.

Though I normally find RDJ to be handsome and attractive, what you’re seeing as insouciance here strikes me as smarmy and forced here and turns me off. I also don’t like the hammy hands and clothes-tugging, which both seem distracting from and incompatible with good face (and also rule out Edgerton, who is displaying both and seems to think giving face means squinting).

To my thinking, all those with side angles are not giving face; you need the actual face, especially eye contact, with feeling. All those facing the camera but phoning it in are also disqualified. Brad looks worn out, shaggy, homeless, and sad. Each element alone eliminates him as a contender in that shot, plus it’s a side angle with no eye contact.

That leaves only one who is facing the camera with full eye contact, presence, intensity, and all that is required for good face, and that is Johnny Depp. He’s giving such excellent face that I find him attractive for the first time ever. So I’m stunned that you consider him to be one of the weakest. Perhaps I will come to understand why after I read all of the comments.

Ok, so I never got the Fassbender love until now. That’s one hot cover and one hot man. Maybe I’m newly recruited to the Fassbender Fantasy Fan Girl/Guy club.

But it’s RDJ for the win for me. I love that man. I think he’s a tall drink of water – poor footwear/fashion choices and all. He’s dreamy.

Fassbender is indeed sexy. Downey is a cutie, especially from the neck up. Johnny’s face is softening as he ages and it makes him look womanly. Pitt on the other hand is growing into his look in my contrarian opinion. As someone who did not find the 1990s Pitt sexy in the least, I am loving the older Pitt. As his face has thinned down, his cheekbones are more prominent and he is getting those lovely wrinkles that come with age. Two questions for you TLO: 1) did you see Jude Law on SNL last night?
