Dolce & Gabbana Jewelry Collection
Before we even glanced at the press release accompanying these pictures, we both remarked that these pieces were Italian to the core, referencing Catholicism, superstition, and even ancient Roman jewelry.
How nice to know Dolce & Gabbana agree:
“It is only natural that the Dolce & Gabbana fine jewellery collection reflects traditional Italian handicrafts and iconography. Mr Dolce and Mr Gabbana’s inspiration behind their first fine jewellery collection is undeniably Italian.
Furthering their previous interpretation of both traditional Christian iconography and superstitious amulets, Dolce& Gabbana have created a jewellery collection which is in line with the brand’s DNA. The cherubs and Virgin Mary medals as well as the horseshoes and other iconographic symbols from the secular sphere have been explored in past collections, both in accessories and ready to wear.
The brand’s signature understanding and reinterpreting of traditional iconography, as well as fabrics and silhouettes, is embodied in this fine jewellery collection.
The jewellery is divided in five larger themes, all close to the Dolce&Gabbana DNA and the designers’ traditions and loves. Confession, which comprises the jewellery that resembles Rosaries and Devotion includes the jewellery adorned with the images of the Virgin Mary. The Love theme, of course, is made up of the heart shaped charms, while the Family theme comprises secular icons, like the horseshoe and the four leaf clover. Finally, the Sicily theme, comprises elements of all four of the other subfamilies, symbolising how in Sicily, devotion, confession, love and family are all rolled into one.
The workmanship of the jewellery, all hand made filigree in 18 karat gold, is akin to the Dolce & Gabbana signature fabric- lace. The jewellery is reminiscent of that sensual yet irreverent mood that has become synonymous with the brand’s designs.”
It takes a special gal to pull off these pieces (and her name is likely to be Madonna) but we can’t deny that they’re fun and even reverent in their own way, indicating a deep pride in their country and its rich culture and history.
