Lea Michele never met a sexy dress she didn’t immediately put on and wear in front of cameras and conversely, her cast mate here has a rather vehement need to define herself as a Good Girl every time she heads out the door. Or at least, her style choices give that impression. It’s actually a struggle sometimes to not use the words “nun,” “Amish,” or “sister-wife” when we’re writing about her.

But if pretty, feminine, and demure is your thing, we can’t think of a more stylish option than a Mary Katrantzou dress; especially if you want to manage the trick of being just a tad edgy on top of everything else. She gets a thumbs up on that choice. What’s really bothering us here is the cherry on top of this flowery sundae; namely, the headband. Come on now, Dianna. There’s more than enough interest of the floral variety in that dress. Flowers in the hair? Mega-overkill.

I love the look but totally agree about the headband, it’s just not needed here. Man, she is SO much more likable than Lea Michele (going along with the whole comparison thing…).

Whoever’s responsible for that headband needs a good slap. It ruins an otherwise great look, I think it’s my favorite dress on Dianna Agron. The shoes aren’t a good match either but I’ll take what I can get.

Is it a flowery headband? It looked to me more like a chuncky stone necklace repurposed as a headband. Someone probably felt that it would be pretty edgy to wear a necklace as a headband. I’m guessing it was more painful and annoying than edgy.

  That’s what I thought too – chunky stones like a necklace or bracelet, worn as a headband. Bad idea. The boots suck. But that dress is gorgeous. And she looks so much better here than she does on that cover.

  Even if it started out as a headband, it doesn’t look like a comfy one. In fact, it reminds me of a wedding dress I tried on when we were getting married — spaghetti straps with a crystal cord wound around them, holding up a giant princess-y dress. Wearing it for 60 seconds to try it on (after I said “that looks ridiculously uncomfortable) left me with irritated patches on my shoulders for 3 days from the crystals scraping at my skin.

She’s gorgeous, and I’m fine if she leans puritanical in her choices (though the headband with this outfit is a NO). While covered up, many of her outfits have a slight edge or interest that removes the threat of school marm. It’s kinda refreshing to see a gorgeous girl who seems rather uncomfortable with her beauty.

Overall, wholesome or not – there’s no reason she can’t learn to pose for photos in a more flattering way.

  I was with you until “uncomfortable with her beauty.” I don’t know if that’s the case with DA or not, but it’s a shame if her non-slutty clothing choices make people think she’s uncomfortable with her looks. One can be incredibly comfortable with themselves and have no desire to advertise their wares for every photographer around.

    Definitely – I wasn’t intending to link the clothing choices with being self-conscious or uncomfortable with her beauty. To me, poor posing (here, and in many of her magazine spreads) makes her seem less self-assured.

      I don’t think it’s her beauty she’s uncomfortable with — I think it’s the media hoopla. I’m very comfortable with my body and my looks and I still HATE having my picture taken, because I’m quite pretty in person but look like a troll in photos. DA may have had the same thing at some point (most of us do, because school photographers suck as a rule) or she may just bore easily — in which case, standing around posing is tedious torture.

      Gotcha- I can definitely see that. I’ve done a little modeling, and when I first started it was very much the, “uhm… so… what am I supposed to do with my arms?” attitude, and I see that with her in a lot of what she does.

  I get the opposite impression, that she is incredibly comfortable with her beauty. She dresses demurely because she has nothing to prove. Lea, by contrast, seems like she is insecure about her level of “hotness,” thus the need to show the world her body every three seconds.

She is so freaking adorable! She’s so much more my style (in my, “If I were a celebrity, what kind of clothing choices would I make?” fantasy world) so I love seeing her go out in dresses like this. Honesty, I don’t even hate the headband, though I recognize the valid critcism of it. You werq that good girl schtick, Dianna!

  I had the same thought – the disparate elements make her seem so much more approachable than if she was perfect; I could see myself putting this outfit together (in my, “If I were a celebrity, what kind of clothing choices would I make?” fantasy world) from the clumpy shoes to the twee headband and everything in between. Yes, the shoes are bad. The dress doesn’t look like it quite fits her, the way it’s bunching at the waist and its hem falls lower on her than the model (or maybe it’s the angle of the photo).

I agree: Ditch the headband and get fiercer shoes. I do like those shoes. In fact I am kind of obsessed with oxford heels right now, but I don’t think they work with that dress, unless she were wearing tights with them.

  How ever did you find that? Nice detective work. That headband. I didn’t like it when I thought it was flowers and I still hate it knowing it’s insanely expensive. This reminds me of once when I was a wee lass, I went running down the stairs and proudly announced to my parents, “Look! I got dressed all by myself!” Dianna has that same pleased smile on her face that I had. Then my mom said, “You look like a Christmas tree.” Dianna’s outfit – and mine – kinda warranted that remark. Still, she looks so happy and pleased with what’s she’s wearing I can’t bear to piss on her parade. So I”ll just say: Oh, sweetie – how creative and colorful! (Mom, are you taking notes?)

  My mother used to go with “You look like a drag queen” which always pleased me absurdly. She knows me so well.
  
  My brother, on the other hand, was “You look like a cheap LA hooker” followed by a fight to strong arm me back into the bathroom until I took off the eye make-up and put on a baggy turtleneck and jeans 2 sizes too big. (In my house, my brother, not my father, was the crazy one about dating:) So that always told me I was hitting the mark I aimed for.
  
  Which is part of why I always defend Lea Michelle — it’s not necessary to scream “I’m HOT” but some of us like an aggressively sexual look. It’s got a certain FU appeal.

The dress is fabulous, but it’s the only thing. Her flowery headband is pretty First Communion, as is her hair. Meanwhile, I have no idea what those shoes are doing with that dress. It’s too bad; the poor dress deserved better.

The headband is as awful as much as the dress is awesome. I love the dress, but she needs to amp up the rest of the look with tousled hair and some majorly sexy shoes. I can’t even fathom the mindset that went into selecting that headband, it’s SUCH a major miscalculation. I hate headbands to begin with and this is probably the worst I’ve ever seen.

I love the dress and Mary K prints in general. The headband was a major miscalculation. The shoes are ugly but I do think they give the whole look a sort of edgy, college girl hipster chic. A pair of platform pumps or f-me sandals would have pushed the look into older, blander territory. So good for her for going the quirky, funky route. I hate to see young starlets dressing like 40-year-old divorcees trawling for their third husband (cough Lea Michele cough). I’m a big fan of Dianna’s style. She’s dressing her age and is clearly more into the California hippy chick/indie hipster styles. Feels like a breath of fresh air. Plus, she’s so beautiful that we don’t need to see her good china on display all the time.
