‘d put this on my daughter when she was 8, but she’d have left the house and not returned if I bought this for her expecting her to wear it at 13. I’m all for age appropriate and not oversexualizing teenage actresses (see posts on Hailee Steinfeld for instance) but this is just TOO young.

  Yes! Sometimes it’s painfully obvious that TLo don’t spend any time anywhere near teenage girls. Nothing wrong with that, but their version of age-appropriate is something I’d refuse to wear by the time I could read and write. My current 18 year old self would still love to have you as my gay uncles, though!

  Thank you! I so agree. There’s a difference between age appropriate for a 7 year old and age appropriate for a 13 year old. I’m sixteen now and I wouldn’t be caught dead in this! There are teenagers doing it right out on the RC, meaning not overly sexual and not looking like a 7 year old, but for some reason those girls always get critiqued for trying to hard, dressing to old, and being overly sophisticated for their age.

Oh man, I had a pink silk shantung shift, princess line seaming, that popped into my memory when I saw these pix. I wore it… oh, at least 45 years ago or more. A very sweet look for young Miss Fanning.

This is not how a fourteen year old dresses. I’m not saying that she should be all vamped up and looking sexy, but this is an 8 year old’s dress. I’m sixteen years old and I know that I wouldn’t wear anything like this now, and I certainly wouldn’t have worn anything like this two years ago. There’s a different between wearing something age appropriate for a fourteen year old and dressing like you’re still in elementary school. I understand there’s a lot of concerned mums on this blog worried about their little girls growing up too fast, but there’s a point where girls need, and I mean NEED, to stop wearing the kind of dress I wore in my second grade holiday show. No, it doesn’t have to be all slits, platform pumps, red lipstick and Herve Leger dresses, but something a bit more mature looking would actually be a good thing for her to do. This dress just sends a message of immaturity to those casting her, and I’m sure she doesn’t want to be playing the sweet ingenue for the rest of her teenage years, as someone who does theater I know that those are the roles that stop being fun fast. Just putting my two cents out there.

This is a classic shift, a womens wear style classic going back almost 50 years. That it has at times been scaled down for children’s wear doesn’t make it any less a classic womens wear style.

It seems odd to us to complain that 14 year old is working a “sweet ingenue” style.

  This dress has the look of being scaled down for children’s wear, perhaps because even as a teen she is still young in comparison to someone who would be wearing it as women’s wear. I think the pink and the bows and the other embellishments all combine together to portray an all together 2nd grade holiday show vibe. I’m all for her wearing vintage, it’s a great way to experiment and I know I’m constantly going up to San Francisco to raid all the stores on the Haight, but to me this just like an extra-extra large dress from the children’s department in Macy’s. She really does have a fascinating and sometimes beautiful sense of personal style and I think this was a misstep for her.

Audrey Hepburn wore a style similar to this in one of her movies in the early 60s and she wasn’t playing an ingenue but a sophisticated woman.

  Key part in that was in the early 60s. This isn’t how teenagers dress anymore, regardless of whether or not they admire Audrey Hepburn. I think her style was amazing, but unless I’m doing the all black of Funny Face or Sabrina, I’m not going to imitate her. I’m just trying to say that as a teenager, I would rather dress like Cate Blanchett, Carey Mulligan or even Florence Welch to a red carpet event, and for some reason a lot of critiques get thrown around here whenever a teenager does that, as if they’re taking themselves too seriously. Yes, they’re are a lot of overly sexily dressed teens stumbling around the RC, but that doesn’t mean that this 2nd grade attire is worth commending. I don’t know, maybe that’s just me as a teen relating, but I don’t see anything wrong with a teenager wanting to look older (not sexual) on the red carpet. I just think it’s odd that someone who dresses a little juvenilely gets such praise when people her equivalent age who dressing in a far more sophisticated and stylish way get told that they need to look younger.

I’m guessing that dress dates from about 1962-64….I think it was originally knee length as well. Love the color, pink has been ruined in modern times, pink today is not the color it once was.

Very cute dress. My 14 year old daughter isn’t into the high heels, duck face, sexy, short look. She’d probably wear something like that but in a different color– maybe black ?
