Scarlett Johannson for Interview Magazine

With her voluptuousness, full lips, and all-around sensuality, Scarlett makes a particularly odd choice to go the androgynous route with the styling.

Scarlett Johannson featured in the December 2011/January 2012 issue of Interview magazine photographed by Sølve Sundsbø and styled by Ludivine Poiblanc.

It’s actually a pretty great editorial; beautifully shot with great styling. But it almost feels like Tilda Swinton canceled at the last second. We don’t know if she chose this boycut she’s sporting or if it’s something imposed on her by a stylist, but it really doesn’t work for us. And while she was never really all that great as a model, she looks particularly pained in these pictures. In fact, she looks more than a little cranky. There, there, Scarlett. It’ll grow back.

Breasts aside, Scarlett is pretty thin. Not what I first think of when it comes to androgyny, but at least this editorial is less tired than the Old Hollywood route.

I feel like this would’ve been a great editorial had she been a better model (or less cranky). I can’t imagine Tilda Swinton posing in underwear so freely.

  Watch her in Female Peversions, I don’t think Tilda Swinton has issues with nudity or showing skin unless she changed her attitude in the last few years or as she has gotten older.

    Yeah, Swinton’s pretty naked in Young Adam. There’s also a pretty significant scene in Michael Clayton of her in her underwear, and in Julia, she spends much of her time as a slattern in various states of undress.

Maybe it’s because I’m not that big a fan of Ms. Johansson, but this editorial didn’t really do it for me. I think I hate pictures where they’re just standing up against the wall. The third pic here is my favorite of the bunch. Great lighting, though!

Why photochop her into angles? She has such beautiful curves! This had to have been originally intended for some other starlet. Disappointing.

She’s lost a bit of weight doing Iron Man 2 and Avengers (and possibly her divorce?) – her figure used be much more soft. She still has curves, but they’re not quite so lush as they used to be.

    But yes, she used to be more on the bodacious side. It’s probably a result of her action roles like you mentioned, but I figured it was a conscious decision on her part. Must suck to have an entire industry see you as only one thing.

If this were Emma Watson, we’d be getting somewhere. It’s interesting to play with Scarlett’s image, but this isn’t her look. (And if that is a boy cut, I hope she’ll be looking into extensions.)

Sometimes one wonders if these magazines have to pay some kind of fee if they dare to show a woman with her mouth closed. Also: meh – uninspired shoot, directly out of a very much outdated “how to do sexy photospreads”-manual resulting in some blandly pretty girl standing somehow somewhere in pseudo-sexy poses with her mouth hanging open. I love the non-traditional bombshell styling. Though it’s not what we’re used to seeing on her, they made it look good and, more importantly, like she can carry it very well. Good move ’cause I was actually getting tired of her blow up doll persona.

The photoshop thing is another story. Yes, we’ve been over it a million times, but I just don’t understand the impulse to remove the person’s “folds” and angles.

photo #5: we’re calling this a dress? looks like a sports bra and a body bag to me. nice pose, though. i’ve loved me some scarlett since she first hit the scene. it’s the lips. love her more with more curves. photo #3: perfectly androgynous sexiness. she looks like a very young boy in a push-up corset, and in my favorite color, too. and those shoes- be still, my heart. but again, i say, “we’re calling this a dress?”

I don’t mind the editorial, even though she appears to have the same expression in all of the picture. I do hope that’s a hair styling trick and not a real hair cut. I like short cuts, but I don’t think a boy cut works on Scarlett.

I started looking at the pictures before I read the TLo commentary and I was surprised to find out that these pictures were meant in any way to connote androgyny. If that was the intent for this editorial, it is not coming through at all. Although, the second to last pic is giving off a bit of a Twiggy vibe.

that particular haircut, or a variation thereof, was once often imposed on the more voluptuous among us in a misguided attempt at some kind of titanic clash of the sexes appearing upon one person– & it doesnt usually work. or, say, it works for the first couple weeks for its low level shock value until people get used to seeing it & realize it doesnt actually look very good. it’s versatile, though, you can put a wig over it, which is probably why they did it when. why they do it now, when it’s all been done & they should know better, is baffling.

Anyone else think some of these are a bit heavy on the photoshopping? Love Scarlett (and especially in the blue Louis Vuitton shot), but body parts seem disproportional in some of these.

Okay, I’m just going to say it. I simply do not get all of the gushing over Miss Scarlett. She seems like a decent enough human being, but I’ve never seen any evidence of her “great” (mediocre) acting ability. Nor do I understand her huge appeal. She’s pretty, but she’s also physically very awkward. No grace, no poise.

All that aside, this isn’t the type of editorial for her. Something softer, more feminine would be better. But, maybe it’s good she’s trying to break out of the glam mold?

Once a guy I dated told me I was a “handsome woman”. I was insulted at first until he explained what he meant: that I have strong, unique facial features that aren’t traditionally delicate or ladylike, but are super-sexy (at least to him), and he used ScarJo as an example. I think Scarlett’s remarkably beautiful, but “handsome women” can’t do androgyny like pixie-ish women can.

I agree she looks cranky, but I actually like the idea of not going full lush sexbomb on the styling with her. It allows me to actually look at the gorgeous angle of her face.

But seriously, this is androgynous styling to you guys? There seems to be a pretty big emphasis on tetas for this to be androgyny. Short hair on a woman isn’t automatically unfeminine.
