PA: Your Accessories Are Flaccid and Uninteresting

Let’s run down all those accessories designers who didn’t manage to impress the judges in any way whatsoever, darlings.

Adrian

Remember what we said earlier about the big, chunky pieces being this show’s version of Project Runway’s sleeveless cocktail dress? Case in point. The proportions here are terrible.

Chris

The braiding isn’t bad but it’s certainly nothing new or exciting. We’ll give her some credit for trying to do an up/down pairing with the chandelier crystals. Not bad, but not great, either.

David

HATED that cuff. We thought the necklace would have been great without that fabric swatch or whatever hanging off it. We like the buckle for the belt but the belt itself is too large and awkward.

Kelly

A lot of good ideas here, executed very well. We’re not big fans of this sort of Memphis Group-style aesthetic, but Kelly does it well. The bag and the belt are too big and too Star Trek, but that belt is really interesting. In fact, it’s one of the best pieces of the week.

Rich

Huge incongruity with the wispy jewelry paired with the MASSIVE belt that looks more like a restraint of some sort.

Shea

The wrist thing was a little weird but the neckace and belt are kind of fantastic.

It’s a little disappointing no one branched out and made a hat or a pair of shoes. Still, there’s some talent here and we think the format works, even if it’s a bit too referential of its parent show. The judges need to have several fires lit under their asses, but we’re entertained enough. If you’re the crafty sort, then Lifetime has a blog written by Project Runway alum Laura Bennett (who is herself a very crafty sort) where she recreates the a piece from the winning look each week with step-by-step instructions for the DIY bitches out there. This is a perfect example of how scale is so important. I think a lot of these things are neat, up close (of course, I am a crafter, too, so I appreciate what these people had to do) but when you see them on and paired together, it’s like WHY is that belt so frikkin’ huge? (Rich) or that clutch so GIGANTIC? (Adrian). I do like those wispy feather earrings, though.

  That was my main beef most but the top two, the scale is off. Most of the necklaces fall to that really unflattering length and are busy to boot. You can’t have it both ways.

I LOVED Shea’s necklace and I actually liked David’s cuff. I’m not a fan of huge belts, though. Anyone over a size 2 looks really bad in them.

I am just so done with feather jewelry. They are the exposed ass zippers of PA.

I love David’s cuff! Also love Shea’s necklace, and a scaled-down version of Adrian’s belt would be interesting.

Kelly’s pieces are cool, but don’t work at all with the T-shirt and jeans. If you imagine those pieces on an orange strapless cocktail dress, it’d be pretty fab. In a way, this was almost two challenges in one. First, make accessories from trash, and second, make accessories for a T-shirt and jeans. A number of these designers seemed to get the first part, but not the second.

  You may be onto something. The belt is really too much for anything white, but there are some other ways it could work really well.

There’s a whole lot of clunky going on with those belts.

Loved Shea’s necklace and belt. The feathers were interesting, but can you imagine trying to store those pieces? The feathers would be shredded within a week. I also really liked the chandelier crystals with the braiding. It was a nice combination of textures; loved the neutral color of the braiding–those pieces would go with a lot of different outfits.

I’m confused about the prize of a year’s worth of hair styling. Does the accessory industry have shows like the fashion industry does where this would be useful? It seems to me that it would be more useful to give them some dollar amount in supplies or tools or something like that.

  I’m confused by the year’s worth of hair styling too. I mentioned it in an earlier thread, and someone told me that accessories designers do have runway shows. It doesn’t seem like the most efficient way to show accessories, but apparently it’s a thing.
  
  I also loved Shea’s belt and necklace. Very cool. I hate the cuff though. I’m imagining myself accidentally dipping the fabric into my coffee, my water, someone else’s coffee or water, getting it caught on something, etc., etc. etc.

I love me some big jewelry, and would wear Adrian’s necklace in a hot minute. Not with that belt, mind you, but I would, nonetheless. I also loved David’s cuff. Hated the feather stuff (and I am a fan of the feather), but just didn’t like it here. I’m excited about this show – it has promise, but then, we’re only one ep in, aren’t we? I guess the show’s integrity could go the way of the Dodo here too, just as it did on PR.

I think most of the designers wanted so badly to impress the judges that everyone went for giant jewelry. The truth is most women will only wear one chunky accessory, so seeing a large belt/necklace/earrings combo is just too much. Some interesting ideas, (I’m partial to the Star Trek looking bag), but overall too much of everything.

Ugh I don’t know about this show. Some of the work looks like it came from the prop set of the Blair Witch Project.

As TLo pointed out, the runway staging is awful and it pretty much forces the designers to do these big, oversized pieces since intricately done, but small pieces just won’t be seen. If they’d slightly changed the arrangement to have a large screen beside the judging panel where magazine-style photos of the pieces were projected, it would be much better.

Adrian was on to something with that purse, though. Could have been gorgeous with that material, just junk everything she sewed onto it and go with better, clean-cut leather (red? cyan?) straps.

I would guess that the reason no one made a hat or shoes (even though some of them specialize in those areas) had to do with the materials. I don’t know.

There are way too many big and ill-proportioned pieces, but I think some of that had to do with trying to make a first impression and some of that had to do with trying to make accessories the central feature.

A few comments:
I had trouble remembering anything that was made on the show. This does not bode well, but I am still holding out hope.
Kelly’s pieces are definitely interesting, have a style to them, and, though they are not to my tastes per se, I am curious.
I love Shea’s necklace, like her belt, am unsure about her bracelet, and fear for her “connection” with James.

Those wispy feathers gross me out for some reason. It just seems like it would make one uncomfortable all night, the way they’d touch the skin. Ooh, I’m disgusted just thinking about it.
Loved Kelly’s pieces, though I wish she’d made the belt less awkwardly wide. It’s the nerd in me – I covet that Star Trek clutch.

I thought Kelly’s clutch was fantastic! I’d buy that in a heartbeat. Very different both in color and materials. And Shea’s model could be Minnie Driver’s twin.

I like quite a few of these pieces. I’m a crafter and I love accessories too, so of course I would. I love Shelly’s clutch and Adrian’s too. I wish they’d just stock a storeroom with all kinds of nice materials and give them time to actually think about and make something great, instead of hurry, dig through garbage, you’ve got 4 hours. (I don’t know how long they gave them). Of course then you wouldn’t have as much drama and more realistic competition and results. Or, give them all the same materials and see how different the results could be. I like to see them solve problems creatively.

I love Chris’ juxtaposition of crystals and rope. I’m probably out of touch but I’ve never seen it before. Shea’s pieces are awesome as well and easily wearable but David and Rich failed to inspire me.

I’m a crafty sort so I thought this show would be right up my alley. I’m disappointed that they show the pieces so briefly and all at once so that you really don’t get to absorb. Thanks for showing more in-depth stuff TLo. Shea’s pieces look more like jewelry to me.

I’m still happy with Adrian, since he’s a hat dude and the black cocktail dress (very nice and likely continually-true observation T&L) with the bad proportions is still okay, especially if not together. I can make a better necklace, but I can’t make a hat as nice as that set he did. I want to see what else he can do.
