Here’s where differently minded kittens can explain something to us.

Jeremy Renner covers the December 2011/January 2012 issue of Details magazine photographed by Norman Jean Roy.

This guy. We don’t get it.

On fixing up houses while auditioning: “I wasn’t super-happy being so poor. Eating on $10 a month—probably not very good for you. But I loved what I was doing. Not every actor gives their life to do this job. Some just do it as a job. Well, it’s my life.”

On how rebuilding houses can be compared to filmmaking: “Building a house is like producing a movie. There’s no right way to do it, but a lot of wrong ways. You have to be flexible and creative. You have to move fast, be prepared—or it quickly becomes costly. These sound like life lessons. It certainly affected how I approach my life.”

Details guyditorials are always kind of hilarious. This one has car crashes!

But let’s face it; some of the silly shit you see in ladies fashion editorials isn’t any less eyeroll-inducing. The goal here was not to showcase the clothing but to showcase the actor. In that case, well done. Otherwise, we don’t get it. Seriously, you guys. Is he blazingy charismatic in a way we’re just not seeing? Explain.

Yes…but charisma is in the eye of the beholder. I find the intensity that he generally brings to his roles appealing, but I wouldn’t expect that everyone else should feel the same way.

In both the Hurt Locker and The Town he exudes a sort of “danger” vibe that many respond to… yes, including me.

I’ve always thought it had something to do with the fact that the first role he really got noticed for was that of a solider and he fixes houses in real life. His image is a throwback to the 70′s (think Steve McQueen) where men liked to do “manly” things. Hollywood isn’t producing many of those guys right now.

To my eyes, he’s infinitely more appealing than almost anyone on that People’s Top Ten mess. That’s not saying much, of course, but – there’s character in his eyes, there’s something interesting in the set of his mouth. He’s something other than a caricature.

I’m biased, though. I enjoyed him in Hurt Locker, and thought he was absolutely knockdown amazing in The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things. Then again, who wasn’t? That movie was a monster.

  I think its the fact that hes not like…. Ryan Gosling where you have to be utterly gorgeous to even think of dating him (I mean… Eva Mendes) but he’s just cute enough that if he hit on you in a Starbucks you could see yourself dating him and you would be so proud of it…. right? There’s something about his face which reminds me a wee bit of Dominique Pinon (Delicatessen, Amelie, Micmacs etc), a slightly squished factor. And yet he is attractive (as is Pinon). That’s a great house building/movie making analogy too.

He’s very good in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, I’ve been too much of a wuss to watch The Hurt Locker as yet.

      Trust, I understand. I lived for four years without convenient access to a movie theater, and once things leave theaters I am terrible about getting around to see them. Probably the only reason I’ve even seen The Hurt Locker was the quiet desperation of the procrastinator’s impulse during finals week.

        A friend of mine’s nephew is a bomb defuser and she can’t bring herself to watch that movie. It is incredibly difficult to get into bomb school, or whatever it’s called, and half don’t make it through. Her nephew got an $80K signing bonus when he graduated (well deserved). He loves his job!

  i think the article plays both up & to his bit of grit–which is the thing that makes him attractive. along w/ that he doesnt look almost interchangeable w/ all the other actors of his, this, & our current era. which is always good. i dont mind ryan reynolds, et al, but i have a difficult time telling them apart.

Theres the ruggedness thing he’s got going. Sort of Daniel Craig-esque in that he’s no pretty boy, not too polished… but has a rugged swagger about him. He seems like a man’s man (whatever that means), like he could fix things and carry you out of a burning building. Not just act like he could. I don’t know, I always respond to the non-pretty boys though. So maybe I am biased.

He’s got a beautiful body, but more than that, he looks like the kind of man you might actually have an interesting conversation with, once all the clothing-ripping and unbridled lust was exorcised. I love him! I think it’s the everyman appeal. He seems so real, not a hollywood pretty boy airhead or young party guy. He’s a bit older, could just be the guy who lives down the street and works at the garage. His meteoric rise after ‘The Hurt Locker’ just makes me happy for him. I get that ‘American dream actually happens sometimes’ kind of glow. Just looking at him, I guess he’s kind of average. It’s all in the backstory.

He doesn’t do it for me, but then I find bad boys something one should grow out of before reaching legal age — a guy who alternates between making you miserable and blissful still spends a good chunk of time making you miserable!

I do, however, find him to be a very good actor and a somewhat interesting human being — though I’m reserving judgment on the second until he’s been around awhile longer. Looking forward to him in Avengers:)

I’ve loved this guy since I saw him on Angel all those years ago as Penn. He’s not a good-looking guy, but he’s just damn intense, he’s absolutely riveting. He sucks at still photos, though, because they don’t seem to capture the way there’s always something going on just beneath this guy’s skin. Even when he’s not making a move, you get the impression that he’s about to, and it’s that edge of unpredictability that’s ultimately the draw for me.

He photographs oddly, granted. I’ve seen him in person and he looks much more normal in real life. He’s a very down-to-earth, self-deprecating guy. But it’s all about the attitude with him. A poster on another board I frequent said part of what made him attractive was that he’s short and doesn’t give a fuck. He owns his (lack of) height, unlike certain other actors who shall remain nameless.

Tlo: I think people in general just respond to someone like this, who doesn’t fit the Hollywood mold of “pretty”, but who is a “guy’s guy” and someone who you feel like hasn’t let fame go to his head. He’s got a little bit of a bad boy vibe to him, and you feel like you could have a brew with him watching the Patriots on Sunday. He’s also got a little bit of a dark side, it seems, and could go either altar boy, or serial rapist at any time. In other words — he’s unpredictable, masculine, and intense.

I first saw him in “The Hurt Locker” and was really drawn to the way he inhabited the character. That movie was so good, and he was right at the center of it, and he just did an amazing job.

I can’t exactly say why I think he’s attractive, but there’s something in his eyes that I really like. And he’s that sort of normal guy-hot that I really like because I can imagine him being that cute guy at work or whatever. Plus, he has that old-school manly vibe that many other people have pointed to – which is something that a lot of actors right now don’t have.

He is Clint Barton/Hawkeye. Watch The Avengers trailer for more details. He’s one of the reasons why I’m going to see that movie on May 4, 2012. And of course the other reasons would be Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, and Chris Evans.

I haven’t seen this guy before – obviously when I was watching Thor I had tunnel vision for the Hemsworth abs – but he is quite attractive on the cover. In the other pics there is something about his eyes that reminds me of Rob Schneider, and once I had that in mind I couldn’t shake it.

I have a question: how do you eat on $10 a month? That’s ~33 cents a day… maybe 2 packets of Top Ramen and nothing else. A pound of rice is roughly a dollar if you buy in bulk. I couldn’t imagine doing construction on that little food. Is there some secret, very cheap grocery store that I don’t know about? I’m sure he’s exaggerating a bit, but why such a tiny number?

Did you see “The Hurt Locker”? Seriously good job on that movie. He brings intensity. I first noticed him on a police drama that only lasted one season, “The Unusuals,” I think was the name. He was good in that. I think that talent is really appealing.

“The Hurt Locker” is one of my favorite films … probably in no small part due to his performance. He has that “intangible” factor that you just can’t put your finger on, but you can never look away from him.

He’s got the looks to fall on either side of the “attractive” line, depending on charisma and personal presence. For me, I’ve gotta see him walking & talking to tell if a guy’s got that ‘it’ going on. If he does, he’s good enough looking to be a knockout in a way the pretty boys can never be.
