In the belly dance world, we call tassels placed squarely on the crotch “crassels.” It is tacky and usually found on the sorts of costumes we refer to as airport specials (as in, bought by tourists in the airport on their way home from some Middle Eastern country or another, and always cheap and ill-made). She is so wearing a crassel. It’s not a bad concept for a dress, but the fringe placement is just terrible, and makes the whole thing reminiscent of those airport specials.

Here’s what I’ve started to wonder on some of these in or outs. Is Blake out, or is Marchesa out? I mean could anyone wear that dress? Or was it just part of a roll out for fashion week and didn’t seem that entirely too ridiculous as part of the whole set but an’t possibly be worn in real life – or the facsimile that is the red carpet? The model picture looks odd but not quite so dreadful, but then again you can’t see the sides or the way it photos under red carpet lights. But on an actress (not a model) every flaw with the dress itself is magnified. Is this not her dress, or is it not anyone’s dress?

OUT. And I’m with all of the commenters who are are saying it’s mainly due to Marchesa designing such an awful dress in the first place. I can see the influence of the 1920′s with this, but at the same time, it strikes me (on both Blake and Alex) as “cheaper than a two-bit whore”. Blake’s hairstyle isn’t helping as it should be much sleeker (the way Alex’s hair was done), but I give the shoes props. While I’m sure the cost of those earrings would probably cover at least 3, or more, payments of my student loan, and they *seemingly* go perfectly with the dress, in the end the solid drop stone is way too heavy when paired with all that fringe and lace.

I like the idea of it, the color palate and the lacework.
This begs an interesting question, How could one modify this dress and make it elegant ?

I’m in the headless minority with an IN for this. Yes, even with 23″ fringe coming out of the cooch. Read on if you wish.

She has the body for it. The element placement is relatively modest. The color scheme is not garish. She is young enough to still wear some crazy shit. She is well accessorized and tastefully made up. She is carrying herself with poise and confidence. I don’t think she looks awkward at all, in fact I think she’s rocking the hell out of it. It’s great publicity on a day when we’re suppose to be ripping the AMA red carpet. The sane girls not wearing buckets of fringe probably looked downright boring in comparison.

Paz would’ve looked like a crack-headed ho’ (as usual). Aguilera would’ve looked like a pudgy small time drag queen. Blake is hitting all the right notes. That’s what I say and I’m sticking’ to it.

I would never say that this is my favorite dress, and I loathe Marchesa as the vanity project that it most surely is. That said, within the limitations of the garment, Blake is working this fucking dress like the rent is past due and the landlord’s threatening her with eviction.

Fine, the dress is basically embellished illusion netting. Still, the shoes, earrings (G-d! Those earrings! TO DIE!), and jewelry all so impeccably work together with her youthful makeup and the braided updo, together they create a romantic “look” that, sure, strongly references its strong art deco and chinoiserie influences, but looks chic, modern, and, more than anything, glamorous. Even the color of the garment makes her skin look golden and flawless.

Besides, it has to be said: the girl is so gorgeous, it’s practically criminal. Having seen that third picture, where she’s smiling and in motion, how could anyone not imagine that girl in that outfit walking into a room and drawing every eye, in the best possible way? There’d be a collective gasp for breath.
