Let’s take a short break from talking about celebrities and their amusing attempts at wearing clothes to watch a real pro show them how it’s done. Here’s your mid-day pretty, darlings: an editorial that’s refreshingly simple in its old-school glamour aesthetic. It almost looks like something you’d see in a 50-year-old back issue of Vogue. Sometimes, you just need a little uncomplicated pretty in your life. And really big hair.

Man, the last photo reminds me of this great old movie, A New Leaf- where vile seducer Walter Matthau marries and plots to kill botany-nerd heiress Elaine May, but gives up after she almost kills herself a million times through sheer befuddledness.

I ADORE this shoot! Except for that last photo where she looks like she’s been caught trying to steal an orchid from a luxurious hotel. But, then again, that’s what heiresses do, isn’t it?

Oh, so fabulous. The model’s whole head in the second picture looks like one of the painted advertisements/movie posters from the 40s and 50s. It doesn’t even look photographed.

I LOVE THIS. I particularly like that several of the the model’s poses are very un-period (no lady back in the day would have her leg cocked out like that, so casual and crotch-opening), so it makes an interesting juxtaposition. It keeps it out of period drag.

Love the idea and styling. Dont love the way the model poses her legs. The fifth pic down with the yellow jacket (?) seems particularly awkward and certainly not very vintage. I don’t mean to get all ALT but that’s what struck me first.

Love the stylized look! There is a restaurant in Orlando (Linda’s La Cantina anyone?) and one of the powder rooms is wall-paperd in old Vogue magazine pages, and fashion illustrations from the mid-century, that is EXACTLY what the model here looks like. ADORABLE!

this is nice enough in its way. her face is more abstracted & plastic than it wouldve been seventy years ago [fifty, frighteningly is only 1961 & if theyre talking dietrich, as they are, you gotta go back further]. so maybe thats the updating. i seriously wonder what things would look like now if there were no past for them to reference–& i have to call them things cos this covers all kinds of products & all kinds of design. i wonder if it would be interesting if, for example, today’s other post-ee [gaga] had nobody at all to copy. same w/ marc jacobs, all kinds of people. what can they make thats new? it might be okay, really, if they tried. maybe not but then maybe people w/ newer ideas could do something? maybe?
