Work of Art Season 2 Premieres TONIGHT!

Darlings, are you all set for the premiere of “Work of Art” on Bravo at 9/8c tonight? Well fear not. T Lo is here once again to give you the rundown on this year’s collection of attention whores and sensitive types. Make your predictions now: who’s going to be the biggest asshole? The most pretentious? The naive babe in the woods? The Nice Guy? The Nice Girl? The one you want to see naked?

Oh, sorry. We didn’t mean that last one. It’s just… helloooo, French guy!

Hit it, wannabes!

Bayeté
34, Hometown: New York, NY

Bayeté is an artist, photographer, and arts educator living in New York City. He began his career as a photojournalist for the Knight Ridder Newspaper Corporation, and has exhibited with The San Francisco Arts Commission, the Oakland Museum of California, MoMA P.S.1, the New Museum, the Zacheta National Gallery of Art (Warsaw, Poland) and the Goethe Institute (Accra, Ghana), to name a few. His collaborative film with the Cause Collective was screened at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. With accolades including FSP/Jerome Fellowship, fellowships and residencies the McColl Center for Visual Art and Can Serrat International Art Center, Bayeté’s artistic reach is growing. He is very involved in public arts projects with organizations such as The International Center of Photography, Alternate Roots and The Laundromat Project. His photographs have been published in numerous books and magazines, such as “Dis:Integration: The Splintering of Black America” by Eugene Robinson, “Posing Beauty” by Dr. Deborah Willis and “The Spirit of Family” by Al and Tipper Gore.

Dusty
32, Hometown: Mountain View, Ark.

Dusty earned a B.F.A. in sculpture and a degree in Art Education from Arkansas State University in 2001. In 2004 he graduated with an MFA in sculpture form Michigan State, with a year of studying art abroad under his belt. Dusty currently lives in Arkansas and teaches art at a public elementary school, as well as college courses in the evenings and throughout the summers. His passion for art is apparent in his teaching, as well as through the dedication he commits to his craft. Dusty’s sculptural/installation works have been exhibited in spaces such as the Brooks Museum of Art in Memphis, the Mobile Museum of Art in Mobile, AL, and the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock, in addition to others. In 2003, Dusty had his first solo exhibition at the Urban Institute of Contemporary Art in Grand Rapids, MI. Supported by his wife and family, Dusty dedicates his participation in “Work of Art” to his daughter Cora, who was born in 2010.

Jazz-Mihn
32, Hometown: New York, NY

With a M.F.A. from California State University, Long Beach and a BFA from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Jazz-Minh is a full-time artist who is known for her swift painting skills. She has received numerous grants and scholarships including a NYFA fellowship and an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant. Her work focuses on the human psyche and is often infused with organic elements. Jazz-Minh has had solo shows in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Paris, and has been featured in various publications including Interview Magazine, Whitehot Magazine and American Art Collector, among others. In 2009, she co-founded the NYC based art collective, Gutbox, which garnered press for their show at Y Gallery the following year, and their first permanent art installation at the Magoski Arts Colony. Jazz-Minh’s work is represented by Lyons Wier Gallery NYC, with whom she is currently producing a solo show to debut early next year.

Kathryn
29, Hometown: Brooklyn, NY

Kathryn earned a B.F.A. in Photography from MassArt and a M.F.A. in Photography from Yale University. While at Yale, she was awarded the Schickle-Collingwood Prize, and upon receiving her MFA, was the recipient of the Alice Kimball English Traveling Fellowship to conduct research on the history of anatomical dissection in Italy. Her work has been published in “25 Under 25 Up-and-Coming American Photographers,” Photo District News and Metropolis, to name a few. She has created art on commission basis for New York Magazine, TIME Magazine, Details magazine and Culture+Travel magazine, among others. Kathryn’s work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in New York, Boston, Chicago, Miami, and Philadelphia. Her photographs deal with themes of the human condition and body, often drawing ideas from the medical world. In her most recent work, Kathryn has been constructing and photographing visceral tableaux, which incorporate surrogate organs that she makes out of dough, jelly, berries, fruit juices and other material.

Kymia
30, Hometown: New York, NY

Kymia graduated with a BFA from East Carolina University in 2003 and went on to study at the University of Florida. After receiving her MFA in 2006, Kymia moved to New York City to pursue her passion of the arts. She has since earned several prestigious residencies and awards for her work including Swing Space with LMCC (2009, 2007), Nominee and Fellowship with the Aljira Emerge 10 Program (2008), NYFA Grant and Fellowship (2009), as well as visiting artist and lecturer at Westchester Community College (2010). Kymia was recently invited to be a panelist for the 2011 NYFA fellowships for printmaking, drawing and book arts. With works that have been showcased in prestigious spaces including the Brooklyn Art Library and the Queens Museum International Biennale, Kymia is proving to be an ambitious and determined young artist. She currently works as a waitress to make ends meet, but seeks to engage herself in art full-time.

Leon
31, Hometown: Kedah, Malaysia

Born in Kedah, Malaysia, Leon has been profoundly and proudly deaf since birth. His first language was American Sign Language and as a child, he drew and painted incessantly, inspired by the colorful covers of music cassettes. Instinctively, his deafness has served as motivation to examine ways of telling a story through his artwork without speaking, reading or writing. He built his world without the need to hear sound or music by living alone at 14. After graduating from Rochester Institute of Technology and De Montfort University in the United Kingdom, Leon settled in New York City to explore his passion. Leon dabbles in a wide range of art forms, including painting, photography, multimedia, installations, and performance objects. His art has been exhibited in galleries, museums and major festivals including the Total Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul, the CAFA Art Museum in Beijing, and the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Recently, Leon’s transformative portrait work of Julian Assange was featured in the 2010 TIME Magazine’s “Person of the Year” issue. Leon has worked tirelessly to make a name for himself by demonstrating the real meaning of being an artist without ability to hear. He seeks to explore the dispositions and aftereffects of creation, evolution and abstraction, working with the elements of fire, water and sunlight.

Lola
24, Hometown: Los Angeles, Calif.

A young artist of 24, Lola was born in Studio City, California. She grew up between Sydney, New York and LA, where she is currently based. Lola studied sculpture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and received her BFA from OTIS college of Art and Design, where she won the Jurors Prize at their 2010 BFA show. Sculptor Robert Graham, whom she assisted till his death in 2008, was a major inspiration to Lola. Today she works with a wide variety of forms including sculpture, installation, drawing, and performance. A lover of literature and history, her work often employs metaphor, simile, metonymy, and other literary devices to create conceptual proximity between disparate things. She is influenced by investigative journalism, headlines, the editorializing of popular culture, magic, medicine, science, and the new age. Lola enjoys snake charming and boating with her family.

Michelle
29, Hometown: Bridgewater, N.J.

A graduate of the School of Visual Arts in New York City, Michelle excels at taking risks and experimenting with various types of materials in sculpture. She currently lives in Brooklyn, NY. Being in New York has provided Michelle with opportunities to work for esteemed galleries including Zach Feuer Gallery and Elizabeth Dee Gallery, as well as assisting prominent artists including Marilyn Minter and Josephine Meckseper. Over the past few years, Michelle has participated in multiple group shows including exhibitions at Postmasters, Kravets Wehby Gallery, Stux Gallery and Zach Feuer’s Project Space. She has an upcoming solo exhibit at the project space “Youth Group Gallery” in Brooklyn. Ready to break out on her own, Michelle is driven to shake up the art world with her unusual creations.

Sara J.
26, Hometown: New York, NY

Upon completion of her BA from the University of Toronto, Sara moved to New York City where she cultivated a signature style of painting through the use of unusual mediums. Sara has dabbled in installation work, such as her participation in Thom Sokoloski’s “The Encampment,” on Roosevelt Island in 2007. She has displayed pieces in various shows at prominent locations including the Space Womb in 2010, The Puzzle Project (Osaka, Japan) and Salon, a show she participated in and acted as co-curator. Sara initiated and developed “MUSE: Movement to Uncover Self-Expression,” a non-profit workshop for women in the Lower East Side in 2010. As evident in her paintings, Sara explores and deconstructs concepts in womanhood, identity, spirituality and the subconscious in her unique works of art.

Sarah H.
34, Hometown: Cleveland, OH

Sarah was born in Royal Oak, Michigan. The visually repetitive environment of suburban architecture continues to inform and influence her work. Sarah focuses on installations and sculptures, which she believes are inspired by quotidian objects and spaces, copying, mirroring, and amplifying the chosen structures, creating tension between the original and the intervention. Sarah graduated with a BFA from the University of Michigan and continued her art education by earning a MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. She has had a number of group exhibitions in New York including shows at the Drawing Center, Mixed Greens and Smack Mellonand. She most recently had a solo show at the Akron Art Museum and is currently an art professor at the Cleveland Institute of Art.

Tewz
31, Hometown: Chicago, Ill.

Tewz studied printmaking at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and is known internationally for his graffiti and street art. His work can be found on the walls of New York, San Francisco & Chicago, and as far away as Prague, Sao Paulo, and Tokyo. He is the winner of the Cut & Paste Digital Design Tournament for Chicago in 2007 and more recently, the Mary Koga Award from the Japan America Society of Chicago. Tewz believes that art can be serious and fun. He focuses on subversive, street oriented works that are accessible to the masses, while juxtaposing the themes of “play” vs. “art.” Working across mediums, Tewz is multidisciplinary; fluent in serigraphy, painting, sound, graphic design, photography and many others. Tewz is passionate about his community and teaches at the South Chicago Art Center.

The Sucklord
41, Hometown: New York, NY

The Sucklord is the creator of SUCKADELIC ENTERPRISES, an evil arts organization based in Chinatown NYC. Specializing in bootleg action figures, illicit remix records, and low-budget sci-fi movies, The Sucklord seamlessly blends geeky nerd obsessions with street-level hipster cool. A master of media manipulation, The Sucklord is both an entrepreneur, and an artist. Running his art-racket as a legitimate business keeps him safe from the horrors of a “day job.” Known for his “art toys,” The Sucklord has been in designer toy world business since 2004 and revels in his self-proclaimed “art world outsider” status.

Ugo
34, Hometown: Paris, France

Ugo was born and raised in Paris before moving to Chicago as a foreign exchange student, and later spending a few years in New York City. Today he resides in Venice Beach, CA where he has participated in group shows at the Happening and Chalk galleries. He is currently preparing for his first solo show at the SnP gallery in Echo Park, CA. Ugo’s foray in the art world started only six years ago when he took his skills in motion graphics beyond the computer world to explore creating art. As an art director and designer, he works across mediums, including drawing, painting, creating videos, and photography. Focused and driven, Ugo seeks to further engage himself in the art community.

Young Sun
28, Hometown: Morton Grove, Ill.

As a global citizen, Young has studied at Goldsmiths College, London and is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Young received a government grant to study new media art in Germany for a year in 2007. He then moved to New Zealand where he curated over 25 exhibitions while running a gallery. He was named one of the country’s top ten emerging artists to watch by the New Zealand Herald’s Canvas magazine. Young’s work has been exhibited and sold around the world from France to Australia, as well as in the United States. Accomplished in photography, installation, and performance art, his style is known to shift with each project. He considers himself as much a philosopher as an artist, and uses art as a way to visually demonstrate his beliefs. Prepared to showcase his skills to a vast audience, Young brings both a conceptual and heartfelt approach to the competition.

Glad you guys mentioned this show – I’d forgotten all about it. It looks, for the most part, like it was cast for looks rather than talent, which doesn’t make it look too promising. But if you guys are blogging it, I’ll give it a shot. I have to say though, I expect it to be pretty dreadful.

  i watched the first season and was pleasantly surprised by how much i enjoyed it. there wwere some terribly awful people on the show, but i was surprised by how much i actually responded to. and the guy who won was literally the nicest guy on the planet, so that made me generally happy.

I am only excited about this show for two reasons: 1) Hearing Simon de Pury forcing himself to say “Hello, Sucklord.” and 2) The many gratuitous shots of Ugo without any shirt. Hopefully he’ll wear a blanket ala Miles at some point. /end perving

They found a really, really, pretty cross section of artists, didn’t they?

I was going to predict whom I would want to auf 1st based on the pretentious art-speak in the bios, but there was too much of it.

I can not WAIT to see how Leon’s deafness is handled & if his statements & opinions get their fair share of air time. Many of the deaf whom I know are quite blunt in their assessments and it would be interesting to see the reactions were he to share their tendency to address the elephant in the room around which everyone else is tip-toeing. [I hope this doesn’t come across as negative stereotyping, it is simply my experience which I’ve been told is an aspect of ‘deaf culture’)

Finally, the Sucklord is either going to be one of my favorites or the most annoying person on television this fall.

  I have cousins who are deaf and went to RIT as well (there’s a big deaf population there). And they had problems, when there, with Deaf Culture as well, because my cousins lipread and socialize with hearing people, and the deaf culture people would tell them they shouldn’t.

    Sort of off topic but have you seen the PBS doc Sound and Fury? I used to work in early intervention and I remember seeing it when it first came out. There was a lot of debating around cochlear implants when they first came out.

      I remember an Oliver Sachs documentary about a genetic trait of tunnel vision – leading eventually to blindness – within a deaf community somewhere in Louisiana. Their sign language had changed so that it was all based up around the face to make it easier for those losing their sight to focus. Those who were already blind would cup their hands around someone who was signing for them and ‘read’ the signs. It was an incredible, amazing documentary.
      
      When asked if they’d like their sight back, those who were blind gave a very enthusiastic yes. When asked if they wanted their hearing back they said “no, I like my silent world.”
      
      I don’t know how I’d feel if I had to make a decision regarding cochlear implants for a child. I’m disturbed by how invasive the surgery is and deafness is a culture all its own.

        I Googled the documentary – which is SO worth seeking out – to check my facts. It’s Oliver Sacks rather than Sachs and the show was one of four episodes made for the BBC and shown on PBS over here in the late 90s. The episode in question was The Rajin’ Cajin: Usher’s Syndrome and concerned Danny Delcambre – a deaf/blind chef and restaurater – who’d relocated from Louisiana to Seattle. Incredibly inspiring.

  While the name still makes me all stabby, I think there’s legitimate hope for The Sucklord being the most entertaining person on the show.
  
  If you go back and read his bio after getting past the initial revulsion to the name, it actually sounds a lot more ironic and self-deprecating than most of the others. Maybe his whole shtick is that he pokes fun at the f***ed-up world that he’s thriving in. If so, that could be somewhat interesting.

  One of the “longer-termed” relationships I’ve had in my life, was with a guy who happened to be deaf. You mentioned two things that really bitch-slapped my hearing bias. Both had to do with the deaf culture of which I got to experience by proxy. One was the strong pride that most of my partner and his friends exhibited around simply being deaf. I was really humbled when I realized that it was egotistical of me to assume that it would be considered a defect. I find that many, many hearing people are uncomfortable around such confidence in the community.
  
  The second was getting used to a form of communication that is all about getting to the point: cutting out any unnecessary stuff and being very succinct about what you mean. Since I am…ehem…somewhat verbose…it took me a while to warm to the idea that “less is more” when it comes to ASL.
  
  I will never forget one of the first parties we went to with some of his friends. I was introduced to one of his best friends, and the first thing he signed to me was “I bet you two look good when you’re having sex.”
  
  What a hoot something like THAT would be on the show.

I watched a bit of the first season reruns this morning before work–I had forgotten how annoying Miles was and how utterly cute Abdi was.
And how pretentious the whole fine art world can be. The Sucklord?? Really? Fer cripes sakes.
But–I am looking forward to more BS from the art world, especially since you two will be blogging it. My only problem–it’s on at the same time as ANTM All Stars. My DVR can only handle two shows at once, so I can’t watch anything else at the same time,. The Hubs will not tolerate watching either one of these shows…

I’m biased–I admit it. Gotta start by rooting for the only brother (although, Ugo has got my Eiffel Tower rising–Oooh! La! La!). But they gave it to Abdi during the first season, so I ain’t holdin’ out much hope for the dude.

  I go in pre-disposed to favor everyone who has managed to incorporate teaching in their bio, either because it’s something they want to do or it’s a day job that’s not entirely disconnected from their interests. Rightly or wrongly, I see that as a realistic way of committing to life as an artist, and idealistically, a way of sharing their interests with others. A teacher of any of the arts that shares even a little piece of their world with their students (rather than condescending to or enduring them) is an amazing force for good in the universe.
  
  It is even possible (not likely, but possible) that I’ll like the Sucklord and I say that in part because he’s found a way to make a living that relates to his artistic interests.

    I agree. I taught art for a brief period and found that sharing my skills and interest in the arts with kids really enhanced my own creativity. I really hope Dusty is talented. He sounds much more interesting than someone who refers to himself as “sucklord”. Bleh.

    I got some scoop from my husband about The Sucklord. It was an on-line name he used in conjunction with the sale of his toys, and it somehow took off. He wasn’t too happy about it, but it’s how people recognize him and his art. Maybe he can ease out of it like John Mellencamp – from The Sucklord to Morgan the Sucklord, to Morgan S.L., and finally Morgan whatever-the-hell-his-last-name-is. Or he could go by Morgan Mellencamp.

Oh, thank God–the antidotes to Project Gag-Me just keep on coming! I’m so looking forward to this show–I loved the first season.

It’s hard to tell who’s going to be the Nice Guy/Gal, but those who work as teachers might be the most likely. As far as Most Pretentious or Douchey? Jazz-Minh? Like, it couldn’t just be Jasmine, right? “Global Citizen” Young Sun, who lives in one of the dullest suburbs of Chicago. And, of course, the Suck Guy.

Could be completely wrong about all of them, of course. But I hope Bayete, Tewz, and Ugo stick around for a bit. Cuz them mens sure is purty!

Some of them are, er, eccentrically socialized enough to make for good reality show drama, if that’s what the folks want. All are wildly creative in different ways. A few are even conventionally telegenic!

  As far as older artists go, maybe they didn’t want to participate? Being locked away from your family for 30 days, signing a contract that effectively lets them portray you as the biggest asshole that ever lived (even if you’re super nice) just to get ratings, and probably signing away the rights to anything you make as a part of a work-for-hire scenario — that doesn’t really appeal to everybody. But last season they had — was it Judith? — who was substantially older than the others, and Sucklord is over 40, so maybe they figure that’s enough.

  I thought it was one of the best, maybe the best even. I also think it was quite distinctively his, if “evocative” of Keith Haring as I think it was put on the show — and that it would be a mistake (and that it was a mistake) to outright dismiss it based on that alone. (I have a feeling these judges would have tossed out anyone coming after Monet as derivative and what then of the Impressionists?) This particular piece stood out even without the supposedly derivative line drawings being the distinct aspect of what caught the eye. (Abdi was seriously checking it out and I’d be interested to know his take.) And — and this is no small thing — there was So. Much. Crap. that should have been eliminated first.

While there’s something amusing about watching hoity-toity NY art people being forced to call someone “Sucklord,” the man’s pieces belong on regretsy. I spend a lot of time looking at fan art in various fandoms, and I can think of several people who work in the field off the top of my head who are better, though it does tend to be a bit more literalist than a show like this likes. If LotR is that emotionally and morally important to him, shouldn’t his art about it actually reflect that at some point? Much could be done with Gandalf. I’m no visual artist, but the theme I’d tend to play with is the incredibly powerful being who chooses to present himself as a humble wanderer, fascinated by a people deemed unworthy of attention. Not sure how I’d express that visually, but I don’t think it would be by making an action figure.

I’d say the same thing about Bayaté’s–if something is important to you, shouldn’t you say something substantive about it instead of spouting an extremely literal cliché?

I wasn’t terribly impressed with anyone. Ugo’s seemed the best in terms of polish, but the judges were right that it was too derivative. How many Keith Haring knock-offs do we need to see in one lifetime? (There was one on “Design Star,” too, and he also couldn’t figure out why the judges told him to find his own voice and not Keith Haring’s.) I did kind of like the winning piece (Michelle?). Looked like a Dia de los Muertes thing, and death obsession can get old fast, but it was kind of cool.

  I like Sucklord’s other pieces, but I agree with even his own assessment that the piece he made last night just didn’t cut it. The only defense he had of it was to say it was cute and funny (or something to that effect.) Without the pressures of the show, I’ll bet he could have come up with a unique interpretation of the original painting (but of course, that’s not the point of the show.) Still I think his work is really interesting and rather down to earth — just like him. I cringe a little at the “Sucklord” name, but he comes from Comic-Con not Columbia University, and in the context of fandom and toy/fandom art, it fits.
  
  The criticism of Bayate’s piece was great. It was what I was thinking the whole time. Not trying to sound racist here, but saying “my piece deals with issues of racism” isn’t much of an artist’s statement. I don’t think he thought about what he was trying to say very long, and the work ended up looking like the visual equivalent of listening to a 4-year old tell you a story — it wanders around a point but never quite gets there, and you’re left still wondering what the hell he was talking about.
  
  Ugo’s didn’t speak to me at all. If there were “hidden messages” as he insisted, I should have at least seen a hint of that, to let me know to actually go looking for them. But I’m not an overly huge Haring fan either, so it could just be personal prejudice.

I’d forgotten what a complete and utter wanker Jerry Saltz is. Still, he hated Abdi from the get go last season and Abdi ended up winning. Maybe The Sucklord can do the same thing.

I don’t know, right now I like The Sucklord. I was amused by the conversation between him and Simon about how to address him on the show. It seemed obvious that not only was Simon familiar with his work but that he knows the person behind the persona(and is quite aware that he is here in a professional capacity so will be in character).

I find it interesting that of all the cast it is The Sucklord that Simon has bought and sold from. Wonder if he’s a closet geek or if he has a family member who appreciates geeky kitsch.

My other favorite just off vibe is the guy from Arkansas. Dusty seems like a nice guy with some interesting pieces. I loved his crayon self portrait.

One of the funniest bits was the street artist talking to the guy who did the subway installation. He seemed amused that he got permission to do the installation.
