Vogue Korea: My Fair Ladies

It’s been a while since we did a simple “Here’s your pretty for the day” post, so…here’s your pretty for the day. A bunch of gorgeous models working gorgeous clothes against gorgeous backdrops. Done and done. Take a deep breath and find your center, darlings.

  Actually, many international editions of Vogue (Italia, France, Russia, Japan, India) are available through Zinio for about $5 an issue. If you’re not familiar with Zinio, it’s a magazine reading program available for Windows, Mac, and mobile operating systems.

that skirt and jacket in the 4th from the bottom remind me of Josh’s tree/fire skirt jacket outfit. Or was that a sweater? Of course, this one is much prettier. Looks like a photographic rendering of toile to me.

  To me it actually looks like a painting by Corot that has been printed on the fabric. (Just an art historian’s guess). When I saw that skirt I fell completely in love.

    Agatha just wants you to think that the girl in red did it. Red herring. My money is on the pampered lady in the first picture, protecting her husband/son/privileged way of life. But their victim is definitely the wilting lady on the couch in picture #5. Slow-acting poison, I think.

So surreal: The delicious perfection of Vogue Korea just hours after I turned to my husband and cried: Since when does Harry Shum do K-dramas? Shum looked like he’d just walked off a promo shoot for 100 Days With Mister Arrogant.. while here is, yes, a Korean Agatha Christie.

Gorgeous, all of it. The settings, the styling, the clothes, and — thank you jeebus — the models. Call me an old — and I may be the only one tired of what seems to be the current trend of sour-faced, angular, slouchy western models styled to be unattractive — but it’s delightful to see beautiful clothes on people who match.

Going to have to dissent and say I’m not a huge fan of this type of shoot. It could just be because I spent the summer in China, where every Korean-influenced clothing store was styled in this type of twee/precious/barbie-glam/over-layered way (and I mean floors upon floors of this sort of stuff–we Chinese are copious consumers). This is basically quintessential mainstream Korean-Chinese style done in upscale clothes. Since I never really liked that aesthetic anyway, I’m understandably not a big fan of this editorial.

  It’s fascinating how different posters view things through the lens of personal experience. Obviously that’s the main perspective from which we usually can view something. I’m interested in that you have found this editorial look to be so ubiquitous and common in China, whereas most of us here, whom I’m guessing are Americans who have not recently or have never been to China or Korea, found this to be beautiful, and evocative of everything from Agatha Christie to the forties to classical paintings.
  
  Perhaps it speaks of a yearning for people/things/places exotic, a world apart from today’s America, for a time when things were more refined, less coarse, less common, when it was normal for women to dress up more frequently in their daily lives, or for a wish for living in a more (perceived) romantic period of history, when antiques and fancy gardens and beautiful indolence were the main concerns of the lady of the manor. Some of us may wish to occasionally indulge our imagination thinking of ourselves in another time and place, pretending, dreaming *what if this were my reality, just for a little while?* [of course, conveniently ignoring, all the negatives from other periods of history]
  
  Today, I was in IKEA, as good an example of any, of the complete antithesis of this Vogue shoot. And I really like some of what IKEA has to sell, the minimalism, and practicality. And I also love this shoot, the beauty and sumptuousness. It’s hard for me to see that any of this is twee or barbie-glam (Barbie should have been so lucky), although I do see how it could be viewed as over-layered to someone with a more modern sensibility.
  
  Maybe I’m unusual, I sometimes find myself having contradictory opinions on these pages, probably because I’m just so intrigued by design, of all kinds. Confession: For someone who posts on a fashion blog, I’m actually not a huge consumer of fashion or one who goes to clothing stores a lot, I actually prefer visiting interior design/furniture stores and boutiques/craft/art stores and galleries. Although I used to sew when I was younger, I never knew much about fashion til I came here. It’s been an ongoing education. This is such a varied, interesting, intelligent, opinionated, knowledgeable and fun community.
  
  I see you are fairly new here, and I hope you’ll keep coming back and inserting your unique perspective along with the rest of the bitter kittens.

    Magazine editors: maybe showcasing the same six actors that you have on rotation throughout the year, depending on who has something to promote, shot against a beige background with an expression on their face that they *think* is supposed to make them look interesting and pensive is not the way to go 11 out of 12 months of the year.
    
    The thing is don’t the editors, stylists, photographers, and the actors themselves get tired of doing the same thing all the time? I find it hard to believe they wouldn’t at least want to challenge themselves for the simple fact of avoiding boredom.

What I love the most is that these are clothes for actual grown ups. Women from 20 to 70 could wear a lot of these things with equal authority. Its about time that some clothes for women older than 12 hit the pages of a magazine.
