In the spirit of the post office challenge, I’d like to see them do a school uniform challenge — ever see the movie “Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead?” Granted, no way could anyone hope to sell those uniforms, but they were at least interesting ideas for school uniforms.

Grocery store is always a good one. Also I think the “design for each other” one. Even though Country Korto and Hiphop Leanne were obvious manipulations, it was a fun way to get the designers to step out of their comfort zone without resorting to something stupid like stilt walkers.

Also, bonus question: Who will make this week’s obligatory Star Trek uniform?

I always disliked the design for each other challenges mostly because its unfair that some end up having to do menswear, although usually those ended up looking the best. Would like to see the grocery store challenge again where they are required to use at least 1 food item! No table clothes or napkin dresses!

  Watch PR Aus Season 2. Their grocery store challenge wasn’t a regular grocery store, but a fresh food market. There was no way to make a dress that wasn’t at least partially edible, though some designers used the bags and were called out on it.

      Definitely. In a more normal level of competition, any of the top three would have merited a win (which, really, is how it should be, yet so rarely ever is). But even the bottom weren’t that bad – William’s dress wasn’t great, but the accessories he made were amazing.

Lovely lounge! It is raining here, so I’ll have something warm: Earl Grey tea with a shot of scotch should do it.

I love birds, but I can also be freaked the hell out by them. I’m interested to see what was happening with Kimberly in the workroom.

As for old challenges, I did enjoy watching the designers design for each other, whichever season that was. I liked the grocery store challenge, but they’ve revisited that haven’t they? And they often have some store challenge, like the party store or the pet store. That first grocery store challenge was so good because they contestants were talented, or at least amusing.

  I loved the hat challenge. It made hatspotting at the royal wedding loads more fun. And along those lines, I would have the designers challenged to create fabulous outfits for non-wedding party relatives — like cousins or nieces of a royal bride and groom and each outfit must include a fabulous hat!

My favorite is the doggies challenge, because they were so darn cute.

In terms of challenging the designers, I thought the “Avant Garde to RTW” challenge was terrific, but getting people who can do decent avant garde is not a given.

Put those two together, and you get “Dress a little girl and her mother.” Although for drama’s sake, you could bring in teen girls instead. Oh, the meltdowns that would ensue!

    I always have a hard time imagining that kind of thing, because from the time I was 13, I dressed my mother for any event she needed to look good for — I have a much better eye and a lot more patience for clothing. And my mom could have told someone about my style easily.
    
    But I had it much easier in that my mother didn’t have to like what I wore; she was fine with that. And if it was just plain inappropriate for my age, I knew it wasn’t going to happen no matter what I tried — if I bought it myself, she would throw it out. (Knowing my mother, she probably would have sliced it to ribbons first so I couldn’t try to retrieve it later:) I knew that, and she was pretty good about grasping what was really inappropriate and what was just unpleasant for her to see as a parent.

I’d forgotten about the newspaper one… something like that would be excellent. Like with the potato sack, muslin, and denim challenges, it’s so cool seeing the designers all start with a common, leveling material, and then watching how different the designs wind up.

The Car Parts one was a good one, and had some fantastic results – and is the episode that got me, someone quite far from the target demo, into the show – so I want it again. Apart from that, I think my favorite might be PR Australia’s Find a Man on the Street challenge, where the designers had to find a man on the street to be their model for a menswear look, the faster they found a man the more time they got. You do need a good cast for that to be entertaining, but it worked so well I want to see it again. That, and as a man, I just want to see more menswear.

Comfy chairs!!! Fantastic, because, let me tell you that the corset dress I’m wearing to meet y’all there is not meant for moving around. Just be sure to order me something with bubbles, just to be sure I get enough air.

I’d love to see the clothes off your back challenge again. While Andrae’s meltdown over his disgusting jeans will forever be in the PR hall of fame, I wasn’t completely satisfied with what the output was. I’d love to see some more creative re-purposing. Then again, I’d love to see another truly camp challenge like the drag queens or even the DIVAS – I was quite pleasantly surprised with what came out of those challenges (generally).

But we should shop before we drink. Shopping after cocktails leads to bad (and expensive) decisions. My friend once floated into Bergdorf’s after one too many cocktails and walked out with a fabulous pair of Gucci sandals, which he grudgingly had to return the following day when he realized he had just spent part of his rent money.

I could not do tonight’s challenge. I have an INTENSE hatred of birds, along with more than a little fear — seriously, have you people ever heard of Terror Birds?!? Creepiest damn things to ever live! (My grandfather had a goose. It was mean. It was scary and huge.)

There aren’t too many things that would get me to walk right off the set, but birds and spiders would probably both send me running!

As for past challenges, there were a lot of cool ones: I liked the Nina challenge from this season, the HP fabric challenge from last season, the circus challenge and iconic piece challenge (the one with the museum pieces) from S7, the revisit your previous win challenge in S6, the wedding dress challenge in the finale of S5, the jet set challenge and the update an icon challenge from S4, the prom challenge from S3, and the lingerie challenge in S2. (I didn’t see S1)

  You are right I did! I flip the two around in my head a lot, because those were the seasons I watched out of order, due to a sad lack of cable during season 3.
  
  And my oldest has been very into dinosaurs and extinct creatures since he was 2, and I think I have seen EVERY special made in the last decade (and own a good chunk of them on DVD) even mildly related to them as a result — the Terror Bird was the only thing that ever gave me the willies! I actually had to ban him from watching that particular special while I was in the room.
  
  There’s a reason that there’s a whole group of birds referred to as “raptors”… It’s because they are the most vicious thing on Earth since the Raptor family of dinosaurs died out. (Of which there were many disturbing ones)

    Ah, that does explain it. These things happen sometimes.
    
    And, well, birds are the closest relatives of Deinonychosauria – more closely related to dromaeosaurs and troodonts than either are to other dinosaur clades (even within Maniraptora). In that sense, the raptor family of dinosaurs still live today: 9000 or so different species – all around us.
    
    But, if it makes you feel any better, at least, being afraid of birds, you can technically say that you are afraid of theropod dinosaurs. Which makes it all sound a little more menacing – or, alternatively, strange, since everyone would think you meant you were afraid of something extinct.

      Yay! A fellow paleontology nerd! Did you see the project to alter chicken DNA to pull out some of the dinosaur traits that are left over? And if you look closely, Therapoda isn’t the only group with traits that later showed up in birds, either. There were a lot of herbivores with beaks rather than mouths. And Ornithopoda all had hips shaped like birds (hence the name). The research into the connections between modern day birds and dinosaurs is fascinating; they’re finding so much more every year.

      I would love to be able to say that my fear of birds started with dinosaurs, but it started with a goose. Damn thing had a 4 foot wingspan, a beak like a rock, and no fear — it would challenge a moving car! Though I maintain that if you look a bird in the eye, you can see a genetic memory of ruling the planet from the top of the food chain, and they are just biding time until they can reclaim that spot.

  GLOW? Oh, if only. Sadly GLOW was defunct by then and they were dressing WWE Divas from RAW. The little mean bit of comedy from that ep was that Torrie Wilson, who was always presented on RAW as supremely hot, was picked last by the designers. You could see how nonplussed Torrie was by that.

It’s that time again, again? And Drama V gets the opening frame of the video? This may be a long and anger-producing evening. As to what I’d like to see again – assuming that there were real designers with some creative chops participating would be, yes, Jet Set (does this gang deserve the treat of such a trip? I don’t think so…) or even the recycling center one. There were some train wrecks there, but Laura Bennett gave us “For Nuts Only,” which I remember happily. Drag queens and the WWE wrestlers were a hoot, too. I just don’t thing this lot would be able to summon the humor and verve, alas and alack.

Hmm, I need a drink, methinks, to shake this fashion fug. In honor of London, where I was just about 2 months ago, a pint of Spitfire, and there’ll be a refill needed double-quick!

Any of the unconventional materials challenges – those are always my favorites. The grocery store is still the first and the best, I suppose – but I also loved the “tear apart your Atlas apartment” challenge from season 3. I actually really dislike the “clothes off your back” challenge – sadistic without being ultimately very interesting.

The “Garden Party” challenge definitely needs to be redone, since the first time around, the budget did not allow the designers to use much in the way of actual flowers—and then Nina complained about the lack of flowers.

I know – Pancreatic cancer is one of the worst. A family friend (I posted about him here at the Lounge a little over a year ago) has been fighting it valiantly and so far doing okay but the treatments are kicking his ass.

  Yep. My mother died of pancreatic cancer almost three years ago. She only lived nine months after her diagnosis (long enough to see the birth of my baby boy); it’s a cruel cancer because its usually far too late once it has been discovered. Best of luck to your friend–I wish him well.

I’m with car parts. That Korto coat is the stuff of dreams. That being said, I am SO glad the the lounge is open. It’s been a frustraing, incredibly non productive bitch of a day, I’m PMSing, and I am halfway through a bottle of Jam Jar Shriaz. The Minion Opinionate has given me much food for thought about challenges to bring back. The Philip Treacy hat challenge, the avant-garde/RTW challenge (although there would never again be the sweet sweet surprise of the second look that there was in S4), the trash challenge.

The classic challenge I’d like to see the most again? The “Design a Blue Dress” challenge….. KIDDING!!! Just kidding, please don’t ban me! Seriously though, I’d like to see the Hershey store challenge, but with the stipulation that they have to use something that actually is candy, like Jillian did, or was part of candy, like the Reeses cup wrappers or the Kit Kat labels. None of that lame “I took a giant pillow shaped like a Hershey bar and used it for fabric.”

I loved the jet set challenge. What a way to make them even more tired! Fly them to France to make a couture look overnight! And of course, nothing can beat the grocery store challenge. And honestly, the car parts challenge produced some pretty good results.

So, that’s my crashing of the East Coast Party. Back to the west coast for me. Grab me a quick drink in a takeaway glass (or paper bag), I’ll see all of you tomorrow when TLo talks about how PR has gone to the birds! (I would totally be able to design something around that owl.)

I’d love to see them do the 2055 future challenge again. My favorite part of it was that they had to use vintage pieces for futuristic looks. I also wouldn’t mind seeing the candy shop challenge or the Barbie challenge. Can’t believe there are only three more challenges to the finale. What a season it’s been.

I might be sitting alone at this table, but I like celebrity challenges!

I just like it when the designers have a client and a certain amount of free reign to be themselves. Usually they get a good budget too. I especially like the drag queen challenges. I think you get a great mix of fun personalities and creativity. However, I don’t like it when the designers feel like they can walk all over a client or treat them poorly — which is the reason I like the celebrity challenges over the prom nights, moms, couples, etc. Since I’m a West Coaster and I have to stay up a long while yet to see tonight’s show I’ll have a coffee. With some Kahlua, of course.

I’d like to see the grocery store challenge or the flower store challenge (perhaps, this time, with giving them enough money to actually buy flowers), I think. Or really just something along the lines of the more conceptual challenges from Season 1 (designing for the year 2055, designing a dress based on envy, etc.). But the clothes off your back and jet set challenges would also be good choices.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to redo any challenges in as compelling a way, since it’s been done before and the designers know (or should know) what to expect – and if they don’t, the audience does. Even completely different unconventional materials challenges start to blend together after a while (the party store and pet store challenges these past two seasons were new, but didn’t feel like they were new).

Will we ever be able to look at the various seasons of PR challenges again by designer under the Archives? It was fun when we could do that.

This is so not meant as a criticism, as we know you work your tails off to produce the material you do every day, and often night. Us Kittens and Minions and Fawns (where have they all gone?) are in awe, and so appreciative.

I liked all 3 of the challenges you mentioned, TLo, with my favorite being the jet-set challenge. I also liked the tear-the-car-apart challenge (Korto rocked!) and, amazingly enough, the Hershey store challenge. Probably because the designers did such a great job, not necessarily because of the product placement.

I’ve been re-reading some of your (fabulous) commentary from earlier seasons, and I have to go on record as saying a good portion of the complaints about this season – manufactured drama, crazy-ass inconsistent judging, etc – was complained about by the minions in the earliest seasons too. No, the comments aren’t still there on y’all’s blog, but you say things like “we know you guys think __” and “we know there has been a lot of ___-hate” that gives it all away.

My favorite is still the dress-Barbie-and-the-model challenge! Since half of what they’ve made this season ALREADY looked like Barbie clothes, it should go swimmingly.

Another drag queen challenge would be really fun. I also enjoyed inspiration-from-the-museum. I agree with those who said the USPS uniform design was fun, and they should do it with another type of uniform.

Bert was my boy (well Scottyf’s boy, technically, but I figured they’d just be my gay best friends) so I’m done with the show.

After I was forced into semi-retirement, I went to design school so I know what it is like to be of a certain age and surrounded by kids who are dismissive of anyone over 30 (most of them eventually come around but you want to smack them in the meantime…). So, I was understanding of his grumpiness with his teammates and the other contestants.

In the case of Christian Siriano, he actually has talent, and studied design. He’s also been showing collections and has had some success.

I honestly don’t get the Anya love. Viktor is a far more accomplished and talented designer, Laura’s capable, ditto Kimberley.

I hate how Viktor always makes self-congratulatory comments about his outfits on the runway.

I officially don’t get fashion. Not just the judging here, but the whole concept, apparently. Both of those praised dresses–Josh’s and Anya’s–looked like dyed potato sacks clipped onto the models, and decorated. I know there’s more work than that in them, but the silhouettes were just, to me, completely unattractive. Laura’s looked better from a distance, but at least, once they showed the close-up, I could see why it lost the round. I thought Bert’s was more attractive than Josh’s, though that wasn’t saying much. I actually agreed with the Kim over Viktor–Viktor’s dress was impeccably made, but shaped weirdly. Kim’s looked like the model was about to fall out of it, but the shape was more flattering, and I loved the little non-literal wing sleeve.

And I’m not watching the new show. Looks like nothing but interpersonal drama. I skip the reunion shows for that reason–I’m not going to watch something extra just for it.

So weird. On the one hand, I thought that if Bert had made it to top 3 his final collection would have been even better. On the other, looking at the runway this time, his gown was really quite attractive and beautifully made, so how could they possibly auf him this time?
Then the judges started yammering and it was clear that he was the only one they were being hard on. I am beginning to wonder how unscripted this show is. It’s as if they told him he had to go this time, so he co-operated by claiming he wasn’t inspired. The man cannot make an ugly look. Laura, on the other hand….

I actually think Anya deserved the win. This time.

But Laura should have gotten the auf, That outfit was AWFUL. It made the model look like some sort of weird emaciated stick-insect. But that doesn’t mean that it would be slimming on a normal woman. Just the opposite. If it doesn’t work for a model, and it wouldn’t work for a non-model, who would it work for?

Oh, I think Laura knew *exactly* what she was doing. She knew all it would take was a question like that, and Clinique would explode in a frenzy of petty, defensive bitchery and personal attacks. Then, she could just sit back and watch the fireworks while CC proved that he is not in fact playing a role but really IS as he seems on the show, providing yet another incident for him to be embarrassed about later. But I do want to defend Viktor. There is a legit point when someone who has not made an inverted pleat ONLY does one when he does. Only comes up with one shoulder when he already had one and they were down to the wire. And BTW I already forgot but wasn’t it Kimberly point out Josh’s copying?

Yeah, I take it as a given that she won. This is the new PR, where people like Gretchen and Anya win. I was really pissed last season. Now I’m just bored with the low talent level and the even lower judging level. I seriously think Kors and Garcia should be replaced. So, we were watching off the DVR (to skip commercials!) and just finished.

It sort of kills my soul that Anya WON for a dress that looked like it had a huge bajingo on the front. AND that she had to UNSEW to get the model in, and sew her into it. It’s so obvious (ridiculously so) where this season is going. It all smacks of manipulation, but I can’t for the life of me understand what a network ‘for women’ has to gain by having a sex-tape queen as the champion of one of their shows.

I have no interest in the next season at this point. Hopefully the spinoffs will be entertaining.

Poor Bert, I came around to him as the show went along. I think, as he said, that this was a really good experience for him.

I felt really bad that Viktor MADE those feathers from fabric, and was trounced for being too literal. There’s a fine line between your inspiration being clear in your product, and being too literal. I was more bothered by the fact that Kimberley copied his silhouette and seemingly was praised for it.

And damn that damned Laura. Those pants were horrible, the jacket was just weird in the back (I didn’t mind the lapels).

Ok. Bert has been doing the one-shoulder A LOT this season and Anya won with a one-shoulder dress, so as good as Viktor is, it’s absurd to claim that she copied that from him. NOW. I can see Josh copying the drapey Grecian thing since his yawn of a cantaloupe-orange dress had more style elements in common with Viktor’s than Kimberley’s did. At least from what I remember of the dresses. We’ll see how this pans out tomorrow though.

Lifetime is not “television for women” any more than Anya is the Queen of France. It is a network whose sole purpose is to make money by pandering to the lowest common denominator. They aim for the frothing masses, the types that would trot off to the Coliseum to watch someone being mauled by a lion. What else would explain why they would deliberately destroy the integrity of Project Runway? Why else would they air that Dance Moms shit? FOR RATINGS/MONEY. Viewers were so invested in the drama of last season they figured that escalating the tension would bring in EVEN MORE viewers/ratings/dollars. So a beauty queen with a sex tape is EXACTLY what they needed to catch the interest of that new viewer, the one who doesn’t care so much about clothes as they do about watching stressed-out people try to be creative in a short amount of time while swashbuckling with the other competitors.

    I agree completely with Viktor that it’s all backstory, good-TV based decision making. He’s right, if the others had sent her stuff down the runway, it wouldn’t have gotten raves. I’d also add that if she wasn’t so telegenic, the judge wouldn’t have been so warm to her and her story. Interestingly, she basically agreed. I give her props for honesty, at least. It was her angle, and she played it well. I think she understood the “reality show” aspect of the enterprise better than most of the design-focused players. Bitter for them, though, to grasp that a less able competitor can beat them at their own game due to her looks and her press kit.

      The girl knows how to play the game. I was really surprised by her garment this week, I liked it and it was some of the best work she has done thus far. She has been so over praised it is hard to stomach, but this week I think she deserved some of it.   Yes they brought LB on to antagonize the participating designers, but at this point, these characters know that the show is about the drama and not the design. Why else would they need a segment called “clear the air.” The producers should just be upfront and call it “stir up shit,” because that’s what they want to do.

You know, I actually liked the color Laura used on the lapels. They didn’t necessarily have to be feathers. The pants were too tight but if they were a little looser, I would have liked it. She made a jacket, with sleeves and dramatic peplum. I don’t think Anya even knows what a peplum is. If the contest was about fit rather than design concept, I would think Bert would have been praised more as his garment was impeccably fit. In fact, even in the history of PR, it is not often to see a bustier type top that actually fits over the models breasts without distorting them.

Anya made an Olivier dress. It did not flatter the woman wearing it and I think it was just as, if not more so literal than Laura’s, just in a different manner.

Josh’s draped dress was no great piece of originality either but was okay– likely better without the frip on the shoulder.

Victor’s was interesting on how he did the feathered look and the lightness. I like his better than Kimberly’s– which seemed very bridal except for that entire seam unsewn that went to her hip (and it was made out of lining). Guess she knew better than to ask Anya for fabric.

I think I’m at the point I was last season when it was apparent the fix was in and I dropped the season. It is just ceasing to be interesting and inspirational and with the unexpressed anger and passive aggressiveness– probably needs an intervention or some post season PTSD treatment. I miss the fun, whimsy and design chops of earlier seasons.

EXACTLY. I just KNEW Nina, OF ALL PEOPLE, would look at the construction and wonder how in the HELL did they get the model in and out.

I just couldn’t help myself and watched After the Runway. It’s sad Josh basically proved how accurate our judgments have been with his childish response to Bennett’s question (not that she’s all class herself by a long shot). It was nice to see Bert being gracious about his loss, but it would have been nice to see him stand up for himself a little more and take the fifth spot away from Laura.

As to the question: I rather liked the Jackie O challenge last season and think it’d make a great repeat a few seasons out with another classic fashion icon as inspiration.

I won’t see it until tomorrow, so I’ll stick to the prompts. As an employee of a grocery store, I’d go with that challenge. I’ve come up with 3 or 4 ideas of what I’d do.
Hints to future competitors: If you cut trash bags in a spiral, you end up with a long ribbon, twist that and you get yarn. Viva paper towels are like fabric. Kool aid makes for great dye, available in many bright colors.

I’ll be repeating this in Bert’s auf column tomorrow because Bert’s color scheme reminded me very much of the J-P Gaultlier collection from yesterday. The acid green with the neutralizing grey. Loved it. Didn’t really love the bodice although it fit well, I think he should have gone with something more drapey. But the colors themselves were fine.

I liked the whole dress. I liked the hard-soft, shiny-matte, neutral-colors quality as well as the softness of the colors–not cockatoo but very cockatiel. It seemed like the most wearable of the looks on the runway, though I assume that is not a criterion in a challenge related to an advertorial. Perhaps it was inevitable, though, that the green and orange eyeshadow wouldn’t make it to the ad.

I missed the after-show, but I was really impressed with Josh for respecting and acting on all the WARNING WARNING DANGER DANGER signals going off and refusing to let Anya play head games with him when they were alone after she won. In fact I believe that is the first time this season anyone has, to her face, frustrated Anya in his attempts at manipulation. I never would have guessed it would be him — he the one who was air-kissing the beauty queen starting in about the second episode.

So what do we think? Did Josh inadvertently reveal that he didn’t win when he whined about still being broke and in debt in the after-show? Or was he just playing it up (or outright lying) to avoid spoilers? (I’d also believe that he lied to Laura out of spite since he had nothing of substance to offer back at her question).

Classic challenges I want to see again: Let’s fly to Paris! (or some other non-US Parsons location). Also another red carpet challenge for a real Iman-level celebrity, where there are no twists and the designers are allowed the time to create some sick garments.

    That’s the only passage I could find too. In my opinion, Laura’s not dissing Josh’s mom – nor is she dissing his feelings for his mom. She plainly says she believes his pain. Somehow he twisted this – either on purpose, or through his own dysfunction, to mean the opposite. Me – I think it’s all calculated – either that or he’s really an emotional and mental mess. Either way – I think he needs therapy more than he needs to be on this show. And that’s not a diss either – just a hope he gets the help he so obviously needs.
    
    As an aside – I was troubled by Josh’s veiled threat towards Laura. The man comes across as unstable. I hope the producers took note.

I don’t know why I watch this show anymore, the clothes are subpar and the personalities are too much. Basically admitted CC did not win the whole thing, which made me happy. Anya no doubt won it. Frankly, I don’t want any designer to win, none of these kooks should win $100,000.

I hate how Viktor defended Josh with the “well we’re gay and we have had to deal with a lot of sh**” While we do go through a lot of sh** CC’s behavior is outragous. Only a mean spirited jerk acts that way regardless of orindation.

I do understand he is have a tough time with money and the $20,000 would have been better given to Kim (see what I did there), but acting like an a-hole does not add money to your bank account. Okay, I don’t know about you, but I am tired of seeing the coldwater creek, Lifetime’s movie of the week, etc. during the breaks. I am not Lifetime’s demographic. I am a young gay male. I understand that those are going to be the commercials for the women demo that watch Lifetime, however, I am watching a show that I expect the designs during the episode are not coldwater creek knockoffs.

Anya however is a walking made for Lifetime movie. Plucky beauty queen betrayed by a lover and rocked by a sex tape scandal makes good, teaches herself how to sew in 4 months & goes onto win project runway. BM is probably scouting locations for filming the other parts and can then throw in the PR footage and save a ton of. Money, especially if Anya plays herself.

She wasn’t betrayed by anyone — the tape was stolen when the guy’s computer was hacked. As for the “scandal” part, I will never understand how these tapes are scandals. It’s not like she was married and screwing around. She was single and choosing to exercise her right to bone whomever she chooses. I don’t understand why this is so scandalous. Without the tape as proof, would there be a lot of us thinking she was chaste? A beautiful single woman in her mid-20′s?

The whole sex tape thing should only count as a scandal if it’s a) deliberately released by either party (because then one can legitimately debate that decision), b) if it features illegal acts, or c) if any participant is cheating on a partner to be in the video. Otherwise, it’s merely a private act that unfortunately became public.

  I’m not convinced about the “accidental” release of any sex tape any more. I’ve read articles that say most sex tapes are marketed and there is always a convenient story for how the “private” tape came to be public.
  
  Maybe it was stolen, maybe it wasn’t. I don’t think there’s definitive proof either way.
  
  Without the tape, I think we would assume Anya has a sex life, but probably we wouldn’t assume that she films her sex acts or that she has sex with more than one partner.

  oh, it was deliberately released. it’s the same kind of thing that she always does: some minor horrible thing happens to her & she overcomes it. it was just the wrong thing to pick this time–not cos it was too risqué but cos it was too passé. but she’s learned. & she’ll keep learning. she’s not a fashion designer, probably has no real interest in being one, but the world will still be hearing a lot from her a year from now, two years from now, maybe ten years from now, long after i have left this rather wretched mortal coil for one i hope is an improvement. at some point people might get bored but–& i hate to say it–it’s more likely that they will forget how they know of her in the first place & just accept her doing whatever she wants to do. for a while, anyway.

I really, really didn’t enjoy Laura’s presence in the after show at all (sorry TLo). The problem with having her confront Josh was Laura is an outsider and if one of Josh’s fellow designers had done the expressing, it would have been more powerful and possibly more effective. Laura came across to me as a huge bitch and obviously brought on the show to stir things up in a Real Housewives kind of way. She made Josh more sympathetic to me, not less. I realize I am probably in the minority with this opinion but it just seemed like all kinds of wrong to use Laura to beat up Josh with.

  I hear you, Josh does need to be called on his dysfunctional behavior but having Laura come in full bad mommy mode was just to create a drama. I resent being so transparently manipulated. Meanwhile, where was Becky?, why didn’t they have her on to speak from her experience? Now granted, that would have also been for the drama factor but at least it would be one human to another. Not one faux, self-appointed, “I am speaking for the majority” heavy-handed vibe that Laura brought. I was never in Josh’s camp but I moved right over into his corner after the after show.

I was disappointed to see her on the preview for the aftershow and didn’t watch because she’s always grated in the extreme. I know I’m in the minority on this and that she’s got a massive fan base — but look, she’s already got her blog on the Project Runway site itself, I mean, Enough Already. If you’re not a fan of her in particular it really is a bit much.

My feelings exactly, e3. It was beyond tacky of LB to suggest that CC may have been making use of his mother’s death in such a way. Whether he was or not — And the use of the term “passing” always irritates me. Death is a perfectly good word. I’m kind of surprised that she would allow herself to be used in such a way. She was my favorite designer on her season. The show is rapidly devolving into a companion piece to the laughable ANTM. I have some hope for All Stars.

We talked about dying and death and not of “going to heaven” or “passing” or “moving on.” And, it was a devoutly religious family too. I’ve grown to recognize cultural differences in speaking of death, but “passing” is not going to enter my vocabulary. At most I can say “loss.”

Yeah I like Laura but having her there seemed a little disjointed, since she took on “the voice of the people.” I didn’t find Josh more sympathetic from it, just thought the whole thing was awkward and didn’t work very well.

They should have either had viewers there that could ask questions or have viewers submit questions that are then read by a neutral person – which could be read by a previous contestant as well as anyone.

I turned it off after Queen Anya arrived. I didn’t like the vibe emanating from Miss Clinique Counter, or the apparent bitterness from Kimberly and Viktor or the hostess (who the HELL is she anyway?) with the low class British accent. No regrets that I missed this car wreck. And they’re going to repeat this bitchfest AGAIN next week? Oh well, I guess this is marginally better than Dance Moms

Why oh why does this program keep getting longer? How about an interesting hour about creative people given a challenging problem to solve instead of dragging on, and on, and on? What ever happened to less is more or the famous Chanel advice “take one thing off” and particularly Tim Gunn’s advice about bringing an editing eye to what you make? I am still watching, but on my vcr so I can edit it myself.

I just discovered “Unleashed by Garo” on Sundance – kind of contrived, but clearly creative people solving a challenging problem instead of pointless reality drama. I recommend giving Sundance channel fashion related series a look-in if you have access. I have been pleasantly surprised since PR has started its inevitable slide into oblivion.

I am sad Bert is gone as well HOWEVER – he really saddened me by what seemed almost like a lack of effort.
The same design with more vibrant colors and fabrics OR a deep rich green in a more lively design. In fact other than the STUFF on the shoulder, I thought Drama Vortex Josh’s looks like it could have been conceivably in a Bert collection

I tried to picture how getting that bird would have done in Olivieererereier. But then I realized Bert’s color story was only slightly better than O’s would have been.

i want to see the grocery store challenge again! but i also want to see designers who area as ‘into the breech’ as the season one cast members are. i love how people grabbed stuff like beach chairs and corn- the designers used to be up for a challenge and itching to show they not only could design, but they could design with anything. id like to see that spark again!

I wasn’t able to start watching til it was almost over. Figured that especially with Bert’s drama quotient dropping down quite a bit recently, that between that and some heavy misses along the way, the next time he produced a less than stellar look he would probably be out. I wasn’t surprised, but still a little sad!

After the Runway = boggle? What was the point of that? I guess adding extra team challenges didn’t whip up the drama they were looking for so guess Plan B was to see if they could get them to bicker for a half hour. I probably visibly cringed when they announced the “Clear the Air” segment because it was just so ridiculous. Yeah I won’t be watching that again.

I’m glad I tuned in to this blog before I decided to even watch the show. I ended up deciding not to see the episode knowing that I will have a problem with Anya getting another win. Plus, Bert’s aufing would be too much though I did watch his exit interview on lifetime.com and he seems very cool about the decision. Well, I guess I have no other interest in what happens next because the rest of the designers left leave me uninterested.

Bert? Really? Have only looked at the Rate the Runway this morning (will watch the episode tonight) and actually found Bert’s dress very pretty. I have to say that judging by the rate the runway photos Anya really stepped it up–the pictures show some designing to my unschooled eye.

I’ve always rolled my eyes at people on blogs diagnosing others through the telly, but watching Josh last night it was so clear he’s not just nasty, he’s sick. Seriously ill. It was wrong of Lifetime to throw on another half hour to try to wring more drama out of his situation. It’s easy to imagine him harming himself or someone else. Perhaps Lifetime will even make a movie about it: “The Anya and Josh Story”, the story of beautiful, wonderful, talented Anya’s constant efforts to reach out to Josh with saintly kindness and tough love, with Anya playing herself.

Evidently “after the runway” means “after the show has aired” but also comes with a contract signed in blood to pretend that you don’t know who is going to be auf’d next and who is going to win. So we are going to sincerely clear the air while pretending that whatever happened in the past few months didn’t happen? I am tired.
I actually didn’t think that Josh came off that badly, compared to some of his explosions on the show. He seems to have been braced for it somewhat. Although it would be nice if his newfound discovery that people over 30 are not dowdy & senile had translated to not insulting Laura…. but this time it may have come out wrong, when what he meant was something like a reiteration of “Well, I can’t be expected to know this stuff because I’m too young.” Poor Josh, that excuse is going to run out at some point, esp. when combined with “and I have 4 years of design school, too.” Of course he’s remarkably narcissistic, but I didn’t think he was having a problem with his meds, which is what it looked like when he tried to pick a fight with Bert.
I am not so bothered by Anya, either. I don’t see her as manipulative, really–that is, I don’t think she plans it out. I think she is just Miss Congeniality, and has actually learned some stuff (like the concept “construction”) while on the show. If the judges didn’t keep handing her unjustified wins, she would be an interesting contestant. But I can’t blame her for being pleased when she does win.

Hmm…last night I kinda got why Bert was out because his dress had issues and wasn’t cutting edge, not that the others were. (And he’s older and the producers were done with his story.) But he was the only one to actually do the challenge. Viktor’s and Laura’s were too literal with bird feathers stuck on. How is an orange dress read “parrot” or Kimberley’s white dress suggest ”cockatoo”?

I’m still banking on Viktor winning this thing. And wonder if the whole silly After Birth thing last night wasn’t a ruse to throw us off course. I hope he does. I think that Josh suffers from being not the brightest bulb, having some significant issues he hasn’t dealt with, and being young-ish. I didn’t take his comment to LB about being twice his age to mean he didn’t think her attractive or etc etc. She look greats, one too many necklaces last night, and the haircut looked less fab at certain angles. I suspect he probably sees her-saw her as a Mommy figure, dream Bad Mommy, and just lost his shit. In the end, I’m hoping either that Bert and Tim fall in love and set up their own franchise or that Anya hooks up with Tony Bourdain to set up a Shangri–La line of bed and bath

‘After Birth’, yeah, that nails it. Being as how it’s so messy and all, like this show that’s supposed to be giving us the next great designer, it’s morphed into giving us the next great reality star. Twenty cents (I’m cheap) bets you that several of these folk show up on another reality show. Hope Bert has the class not to.

You’re too kind to Josh, he’s narcissistic and delusional and unaware of self image. My husband thought he might be playing a character, but the confrontation with Bad Mommy confirmed that he is indeed troubled in a way that a reality show can’t possibly fix, but exacerbates. Laura Bennett was a set-up to see what would happen, hello Andy Cohen, but she managed to get out in the real universe opposed to just the interwebs what so many folks have been thinking for weeks now.

Not sure about Bert and Tim, I’m still pulling for scottyf to meet his crush!

  I get what you’re saying about LB getting it out there but as someone with Dead Mommy issues, I think that’s a low blow. And, yeah, Josh-you-ah is indeed narc and delu and unaware but that doesn’t mean he’s not also really really stupid and not worth picking on in that particular area. I might have been able to tolerate the let-down of LB’s Pixar villainess moment if she’d been better dressed herself. The black dress, fine, with the over-use of white necklaces and the raven pixie — I love the pixie and wear it myself — just made me feel sad for the show. At least they didn’t trot out Daniel V to play the part. And your husband is probably right … Most screwed up people play a character. Def. Dr. Drew’s Celeb Rehab material — thanks for that insight!

(I mean, overcoming the inability to sew is as moving as Anthony Ryan beating cancer. ) But she gets by because, along with her charm and beauty, she’s sort of good at a few things. I don’t blame her for taking and running with every accolade she’s received from the judges. It seems kind of crappy for her to draw the line during this challenge and refuse to give Josh some fabric, but it was no surprise. It’s how she operates. She’d make one hell of a con woman, that’s for sure.

      Heh. Tony said in Kitchen Confidential that people always considered his wife (at the time) a saint for putting up with him for so many years, when, in fact, if he were to rob a convenience store, she’d probably be driving the getaway car.
      
      He came to Durham for a reading several years ago. While we were waiting for him to show up, my husband wondered where he was. I said he was probably outside smoking a cigarette. Then I turned around and he was standing about 20 feet away from us, wearing a leather jacket and a Ramone’s T-shirt. I also love him. One of the reasons is he can be a complete asshole, but he knows it.
