Wow. This editorial is gorgeous, but we don’t think any mere mortal can rock those super-short bangs Rooney’s sporting. You need to be genetically superior and in the hands of world class photographers and stylists to pull those things off. Lorenzo was a bit on the nonplussed side when he heard they were remaking The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Tom hasn’t seen the original), but this set of pictures has him a bit excited by the prospect just because she looks so intense and is working that camera like it took her parking space.

  I guess the painted look was deliberate – a tribute to all the Ophelias by Waterhouse, Millais etc. But something doesn’t work for me either – she looks more like a plastic mannequin than some stylish drowned body

  It looks like virtual paint – it’s not light or ethereal enough to evoke the Ophelias so the result is her looking dead or like a wax figure.

I think I had those bangs once, after my sister told me I could trim my own just fine and I foolishly believed her.

  I was going to say, my daughter cut her bangs and I had to cut them this short in order to even them back out. It was an awkward few weeks while they grew back in.

  it’s the english language version- there is a swedish version out there.

  In Sweden, where the books originated, they made the 3 books into a series of movies. The lead actress in that set of flicks spent over a year filming all 3 movies. The part is so emotionally intense that she was happy for someone else to play her in the Hollywood version.
  
  BTW the original title in sweden of the first book was actually entitled Men Who Hate Women. The title is apt

    That movie was intense. It was good but it left me very disturbed. The worst part is that yes there are an awful lot of men who hate women out there and what happens in the book/movie isn’t as uncommon as people might like to believe. I wonder how watered-down the Hollywood version will be.

      It was an intense and disturbing film and it stayed with me for a while. I don’t think I’ll have the stomach to watch the Hollywood version. Such a bad track record.

      I seriously doubt, with David Fincher at the helm, that it will be watered down much at all. The man can make a disturbing serial killer movie in his sleep.

    I read the books in the original and was taken aback when I saw the translation! The author chose the titel *decidedly* because he was a profound promoter of equal rights and a opponent of violence against women.
    
    In Germany the translation was as bad. “Verblendung”, which means something like “getting someone blind”.

I don’t like the bangs, and I don’t know why we need an English version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but she is very pretty and these are very nice pictures.

  We don’t need an English version. American studios smell money with this series (the books are excellent) and they know that most Americans who go to see movies made by major studios are unwilling to read subtitles. For those of us who are willing to read the subtitles, I recommend putting it on your Netflix queue, waiting for the English version to go to DVD and then have a viewing party, to compare the 2.

    I wasn’t happy about a standard ‘Hollywood’ remake either but I do feel that there is room to improve on the adaptations of the books. I felt that some of the characters in the Swedish version were miscast (Ricky for example) and they ditched so much of the second book that some of the third movie didn’t make sense!

      The books left a lot to be desired, I thought. Perhaps they’re better in their native language; apparently Larsson’s partner was appalled by the translation. Also, since he died after submitting the manuscripts, maybe there wasn’t as much editing done as there should have been. Gripping plots, but they needed some severe cutting.
      
      Anyway, I so, so, SO wanted Kristen Bell to get this role, partly because I want her out of crappy romcoms and back into ass-kicking mode, and partly because she and Noomi Rapace look quite a bit alike. But after seeing Mara in “The Social Network” I decided she’d do, and these pictures are helping with that. Now the poor girl is going to go through that same awkward phase Kristen Stewart did post-Joan Jetting it up, growing out that hairstyle is going to be painful.

I loved the original too, although the books were much better. I wasn’t kin on the idea of a remake but she does have a Salander vibe. She got the attitude, I guess the clothes and make up will do the rest.

  I don’t think so…the physical appearance of Lisbeth Salander is so specific that I think any actress to be cast would have to have had a very specific look to begin with. Not that I didn’t love Noomi, but she was a little old for the part

The pictures are great, but the cover is a throwaway. Should have had her posed like the model in the Ralph Lauren to show off her profile as well as the beautiful detail on the back of the dress. Anna Wintour has not been on top of her game lately.

The article is pretty creepy though.

    It doesn’t bother me that she had to drastically lose weight for the part (only because Lisbeth’s appearance is so central to the character), what bothers me is that she still clearly has issues with food. That and Fincher’s svengali-like hold over her.

I’ve seen the original Dragon Tattoo movie – you must see it. I fear Hollywood will cock it up with a remake, as usual.

  It’s too late for Hollywood to do anything to the originals, so I wouldn’t worry about that. If the new movies turn out bad (which is unlikely given David Fincher’s record), you can just ignore them.

She looks pretty amazing. That second shot of her, in Marchesa, leaning against the statue is pretty amazing. I do find myself wishing that Vogue would do something else besides shoot models in fields or against a solid color backdrop. I don’t really feel like I’m seeing anything new here. She has such a striking look, why not give her a more striking editorial?

I saw the trailer for this movie the other day. Having loved the books, I was skeptical, but the trailers made me want to see the movie.

I could never wear my bangs that way, but I think they look fabulous and interesting on her. Not a fan of Marchesa, but that sequined gown? On her? It is to die.

And finally, in the last photo, are those hostas Photoshopped in? I have never seen hostas that big. And now I want them.

  There are some hosta varieties that get that big — ‘Komodo Dragon’, ‘T Rex’, ‘Sum and Substance’, ‘Empress Wu’, ‘Mammoth Blue’ and ‘Mr Big’ to name a few off the top of my head. ‘Empress Wu’ gets truly enormous.

These are lovely photos, she looks ethereal here. I can see her as Lisbeth, but as much as I adore Daniel Craig, I don’t see any need for an English remake of that movie. The Swedish original was perfect.

  I think there’s definitely room to improve upon the movies of the second and third novel.
  
  I don’t think Nyqvist captured all the playfulness and charm of Mikael so I’m interested to see what Daniel Craig does. He’s a bit too ‘rugged’ for my liking but the fact that he actually turns up with bagels the first time he goes to see Salander (as he does in the book, but didn’t in the Swedish version) makes me optimistic. For some reason it was one of my favourite scenes in the book – who but Mikael would find out that someone had done a thorough investigation of him then turn up with bagels?!

That’s a beautiful cover. I also think the last one is actually quite a striking image, but it immediately evokes another image in my head, which is the one where the photographer is standing there shouting, “Yes, darling! Be the stream! BE the waterfall!”

Love this editorial and I’m super excited for the movie. It’s nothing against the original, but it’ll be nice to see a story that doesn’t, periodically, make me imagine all the dialogue being performed by the Swedish Chef.

So Pretty! I am super excited for the GWTDT movie, but they will have to work hard to top the originals….i do love me some Daniel Craig though, and heard some wacky intense scenes were enacted for the movie, so my hopes are up that his girl can cut it….

I love this editorial, with the exceptions of the Calvin Klein and Marchesa (where she’s lying down) shots. Those I do not like at all. The last shot is breathtaking.

I refuse to watch the American version of the movie. The original Swedish version was so good, though at times hard to watch, and even better than the book. Rooney Mara looks like she may be able to get the intensity of the character down but I’m so jaded by Hollywood’s remakes of good foreign films. They tend to dumb them down to the point that they’re pathetic shadows of the original. If I hear raves I may change my mind but it would take a lot of convincing.

I think it’s strange that so many are referring to the Fincher film as a remake of the the Swedish films. It seems to me it’s not a remake of a film, but a second adaptation of a novel.

  It is also my impression that the filmmakers are adapting the book, not remaking the Swedish films, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see this misconception continue. Once a film is made from a book, it’s probably normal to assume any future films are remakes of the original.

I thought too that Mikael in the swedish version wasn’t what I expected… He was written as a womanizer with brains and an earnest mission, and the swedish actor had no sexappeal. I hope Craig can pull that off.
