Project Accessory and PR All-Stars News

Lifetime released some intriguing (and also groan-inducing) news about the upcoming Project Runway All-Stars and Project Accessory; both of which will be premiering on November 3rd. We’ll leave it to you to decide which bits fall into which category.

For All Stars, the guest judges will include Miss Piggy, Miranda Kerr and Pharrell Williams; for Accessory, we can look forward to hearing the opinions of Debra Messing and Kelly Osborne.

Miss Piggy? Really? This does not fill us with confidence about the future of the Project Runway franchise. Once you bring in the muppets, you might as well let go of any pretense that this is a design competition anymore. We’re surprised that both shows are running at the same time. We would have thought Lifetime would want to spread out the franchise a bit more.

Although the press release for Project Accessory does leave us a little intrigued, we have to say.

Immediately following Project Runway All Stars, Lifetime proves attitude is the best accessory with the new series, Project Accessory, premiering at 10:00pm ET/PT. Hosted by actress and model Molly Sims, 12 designers will compete and showcase their unique vision for accessories and show audiences how to transform any outfit. The designers must dazzle Sims and judges designer Kenneth Cole and InStyle Editor Ariel Foxman with their one-of-a-kind jewelry, belts, bags, shoes, headpieces and other wares, with the help of lifestyle expert Eva Jeanbart-Lorenzotti as their mentor. Emmy® Award-winning actress Debra Messing and fashion critic and television personality Kelly Osborne will appear as guest judges this season, among other fashion luminaries. The 12 designers who will be competing to revolutionize the accessory world are:

Cotrice (Milwaukee, WI/Atlanta, GA) – specializes in jewelry
Brian Burkhardt (Manchester, NH/Miami, FL) – specializes in jewelry
Christina Caruso (New York, NY) – specializes in jewelry
Nina Cortes (Miami, FL) – specializes in jewelry
Shea Curry (Hattiesburg, MS/Los Angeles, CA) – specializes in jewelry and hair accessories
Adrian Dana (Baltimore, MD/Lithonia, GA) – specializes in church hats
David Grieco (Watertown, NY/Los Angeles, CA) – specializes in belts
Kelly Horton (Philadelphia, PA/Edgewater, NJ) – specializes in handbags
Diego Rocha (São Paulo, Brazil/Chicago, IL) – specializes in handbags
Nicolina Royale (Minneapolis MN/Los Angeles, CA) – specializes in leather rock ‘n’ roll accessories
Rich Sandomeno – (Elmwood Park, NJ/Los Angeles, CA) – specializes in jewelry
James Sommerfeldt (Chicago, IL) – specializes in footwear

The winner of Project Accessory will receive $100,000 from eBay Fashion to start their own line, a feature spread in InStyle and a year of professional runway hair styling courtesy of John Frieda® Precision Foam Color. Project Accessory is produced by The Weinstein Company and Good Bye Pictures.

We’re surprised they wrangled a prize as big as the one on its parent show, but what interests us most is the lineup of contestants. They all seem fairly specific in their fields of expertise. What’s it going to be like when someone who makes shoes is asked to make jewelry or when someone who makes jewelry is asked to make a handbag? And how exactly are the challenges going to work? Stay tuned, we guess.

ARE you going to stay tuned? All Stars has a built-in audience, but are you going to watch Project Accessory?

  The muppet “guests” on Top Chef were pretty entertaining. Their placement was in a quickfire (non-elimination) challenge however. It will be… interesting. I’m hoping she does nothing but make fun of everything

  “Her” comments are bound to be hilarious. If it makes anyone feel better, Miss Piggy is voiced by Frank Oz who IS a director, as well as a puppeteer, so he is bound to have a good visual eye at least. And, since he worked on Labyrinth, this is probably the closest any version of P.R. will ever get to a David Bowie connection! Sorry I sound like a total nerd, but I loved the muppets as a child, so I guess I’m full of useless knowledge about them.

  Well, Top Chef All-Stars did have some Muppets visit for a quickfire challenge (Elmo, Telly, and Cookie Monster). The Muppeteers are really good at improv, so it was better than one might expect. I wouldn’t write it off until I see the context for it.

    It’s true, and I found that TC ep hugely entertaining and endearing. The chefs, however, were PISSED. I bet the PR designers, who (correctly) take this far more seriously than we do, might be offended/outraged to be judged by puppets, even if the puppeteers really did get to taste the cookies.
    
    I find it highly unlikely Mr. Oz himself will be performing Miss Piggy for PR, especially if he does not appear on-camera — as he is a legendary artist in his own right and as much as I love PR, would find it a bit beneath him to take an unacknowledged backseat to Angela Lindvall, Isaac Mizrahi, Georgina Chapman and Joanna Coles.

      i don’t remember the contestants being pissed, I remember them as having fun with it – Richard talking to Elmo about how his daughter loved Elmo was so sweet. Perhaps they were at first, but I think that they all got into making cookies for Cookie Monster – and who wouldn’t, having your cookie being picked as the best cookie by the biggest cookie expert in the world is pretty cool …

        That’s how I remember it too – and Richard had Elmo turn to the camera and say “Elmo loves you” to his daughter. Actually I’m really looking forward to Miss Piggy as a judge – can’t wait for what she has to say to Kenley, for example. And don’t you think Austin is going to just PLOTZ? Besides, as Knightley pointed out, nobody could be much worse than Kim Kardashian.

I am wondering if the reason for Miss Piggy is the challenge is something like the Barbie Challenge from Season 2. Like the the outfit will be for a Miss Piggy Toy/Puppet that will be sold. If that’s the case it would make perfect sense to have Frank Oz in the guise of Miss Piggy to be 1 of the judges. After all who would know better what works for her?

I hope that is the case or some Muppet based challenge. Otherwise it doesn’t make any sense

Aside from the Miss Piggy thing (ugh), I’m disappointed in the idea that “attitude is the best accessory”. Sounds like another show built around personality rather than talent. That’s what has ruined the main show. I’ll probably give the accessory show a try, but it had better be good or I won’t stay with it for long.

Not to defend the Miss Piggy thing, but last season on Top Chef when three Sesame Street muppets served as judges for a cookie quickfire, it actually really worked. They were funny and clever, but at the same time took the food critique seriously.

Anyway, I’m just saying it COULD work. Although I agree with all the posters that of all the season’s guests judges to choose Miss Piggy as the one to *promote*, it does not bode well for the series.

The Muppets were darn good judges on Top Chef. She can’t be worse than some of these wooden celebutants and reality show whores, and the worst that can happen is that the actual judges carry the weight of the judging, which would actually be an improvement.
And who cares, these people can design, they can sew, they have points of view, they care more about the garments than their screen time., I’m super excited.

Watched Mad Fashion last night and it was a disappointment. Too little Chris March, too much of people and things I don’t care about. But Fashion Hunters was awesome! LOVE this show. Love love love it.

  Although Mad Fashion wasn’t awesome, I really did enjoy Chris and the crazy way his mind works when designing. He has general ideas and then moves towards what he wants to do specifically just through intuition. Just how I work

If, as the BM publicity mill keeps reminding us, “attitude is the best accessory,” what’s the point of the accessory show?… And, along with everyone else, I don’t understand how the show will deal with challenges that favor contestants who specialize in that one specific area–the church hat challenge, the necklace-and-earrings challenge, the handbag challenge. I just don’t get it.

But it’s BM, it’s Lifetime, and I don’t want to get it.

As for All-Stars and Miss Piggy, well, I think that pretty much says it all. I’ll watch the first episode of All-Stars, but I don’t think my stomach can take Accessories. I’ll just be here, reading the post-mortems.

I’ll watch. I love handmade accessories anyway–and it’ll drive The Hubs crazy. Yes–to see a milliner make jewelry or a metal artist make hats–should be interesting. Jewelry–millinary–handbags–they all need such specific skills and knowledge of material and technique. I wonder if the contestants will be well-rounded enough to produce anything out of ther own expertise….

Along with these two shows, we have Work of Art starting again on Bravo. Can’t wait for thall that crazy….the DVR will certainly be busy the next few months…

  I’m curious about how the challenges will be set up. Will everyone have to make a hat, or jewelry, etc? Or will the designers stick to their specialties, with each one making a piece for a specific scenario that’s presented, i.e. they’re telling a story (blech). If it’s the latter, then hats will be judged against jewelry will be judged against handbags. How do you do that, though?

Bravo was finally made available in our area the same year PR moved to Lifetime. I think I’m still in the throes of excitement over being able to watch each season during its first run.

I don’t know – I really enjoyed it when Elmo, Cookie Monster and Telly were on Top Chef. Sure, having Miss Piggy on is product placement for the upcoming movie (hell, this might be included IN the movie; isn’t she supposed to be a fashion editor in the film?). But I love The Muppets. Frank Oz will no doubt be snappier with the lines than Kors and probably be just as intuitive as any other guest judge.

But if it’s a challenge to dress Muppets – eff that.

I am also intrigued by the church hat lady. Honestly, the Miss Piggy judging throws me into a pit of despair, but I’ll watch both. This is not exactly a recommendation, but I have cancer, and I sit at home a lot, and there’s not much watchable TV out there. I must issue a Wag of the Finger at Lifetime. They list Adrian as living in Lithuania, GA. There is NO Lithuania, GA! There’s a Lithonia, GA which is home to some of metro Atlanta’s biggest mega churches. So church hat design makes sense and if s/he has anything to do with some of the pieces I see on Sunday morning then we are in for some serious treats and serious confusion.

Not to start an argument, but church hats are a staple in the African American community, and are often taken to an art form. You might want to check out the book Crowns for more information.

  As kids in the south, our “crowning glory” sure wasn’t our stringy hair, but the hats we wore to church (and we’re as white bread as can be). One Easter, elementary school art project was to design a hat for church (yes, church and school were entwined). Mine was a flat paper plate bedazzled-beyond-Josh, with ribbon strings. I have a picture to prove it. Silly kid wearing a paper plate. Childhood.

I am actually very excited to see Miss Piggy. Frank Oz is a great actor and director with great comedic timing. Puppeteers usually design and make their puppets, as well as giving them a voice, and as a previous poster mentioned, Frank Oz also worked on Labyrinth, so I think he’ll have a good eye for design. I would much rather hear from Miss Piggy than one of the Kardashians.

Re: the concurrent scheduling: Maybe TPTB know that PR is losing its mojo and they want to milk the brand for everything they can before it dies.

Somebody at BM must be assigned the job of reading the blogs. Disappointment and distaste for what PR has become is widespread. Maybe they’re trying to attract a new demographic with the showy joke guest judges like Miss Piggy and the attitude-focused casting. They’ll lose the vast bulk of the original audience, of course, but perhaps will gain a new one who doesn’t know or care much about fashion, just about what personalities they like and don’t like.

Or maybe I’m crediting BM with more savvy, even of the most cynical sort, than they possess. Their record of success points to expertise in producing “see narcissistic famewhore bitches act out!” reality shows, so maybe that’s all they can do, and they simply turn everything they touch into that format, even when they don’t intend to. Skill and talent based programming is not their metier.

Not on topic here, but speaking of skill and talent, I’ve wondered if Tim’s contract has him utterly locked to PR so he can’t get out. To me he seems less joyful but soldiering on, and certainly less relevant, more muzzled and out of step with the judges/producers since the move to Lifetime.

The church hat person may get me to watch Project Accessory, and not as an object of snarky urbane amusement. I live in the south.

I think Project Accessory will be to Project Runway what Top Chef Desserts was to Top Chef: an interesting idea on paper, but you’re building a show around a creative process that doesn’t photograph as well. Baking is measuring and waiting — not exactly compelling TV — and I suspect accessory making is a lot of soldering and stuff. But who knows?

Last week one challenge was make a frozen dessert inspired by a Faberge egg, incorporating hard boiled eggs. Then halfway through that challenge the chefs were told they had to incorporate dragon fruit as well.

I do wonder how bad Project Accessory is going to be, but you bet your bippy I’ll watch. Especially the first season, before prospective contestants realize what a trainwreck the experience is, there could be some good times watching creative & hard working people struggle with the challenges.

I think, though, that it’ll be cancelled or devolve into crafty-hands & drama queens fast, fast, fast. Church hats, footwear, jewelry, leather accessories? Way different areas of expertise, & specialized tools & materials. Serious artists & artisans will not want to be competing out of their expertise for a good part of the show, and I don’t see how they won’t end up sending way more junk out to be judged than will be fun to watch. Just don’t see how it’ll work.

I don’t mind the inclusion of Miss Piggy. The muppeteers have to dress, style and accessorize her, one of the few Muppets that ever needs these things, and she has a pretty consistent and overall chic look (for a muppet). I’m willing to bet that her player (should she appear on the show as a muppet) is going to be the person in charge of the design and costuming. And while “she” hasn’t been on the red carpet, Miss Piggy has appeared on morning/daytime tv AND the Daily Show for promotional work, so it wouldn’t be such a bad thing to dress the muppet.

They do have a movie coming out at Thanksgiving, afterall.

I was looking forward to Project Runway All Stars, but it is because I was in serious denial about how foolish these producers are – even though they have been trying to show me for at least two seasons. Miss Piggy? Yeah, not wasting my time. And since the same producers are producing Project Accessory, there’s no point in trying. You wouldn’t think reality TV would have much room for ‘dumbing down’, but they’ve managed it!

TLo is truly the only reason I am watching this season of PR (well, ok, Tim Gunn, too). You guys write enough about other things I’m interested in, so I think I’m done wasting my time on PR and it’s offspring.

No doubt you’d have a hard time finding one who’d do it unless a truly stunning contribution was being made to one of their charities & they had some control of how B&M represented the charity on t.v. (because these women are serious about their work & reputations), but the PERFECT judges for an accessories show would be a selection of women from a big event being held for alumni of one of the traditionally black sororities.

These are usually women who dress, and accessorize well – and MORE THAN well – and (mostly) they’re not rich women who just shop the big names and latest trends, the majority just put some thought & love into their clothes & know the value of a tailor.

I don’t know – do you think they might let everyone operate within their wheelhouse? You know, the hat designer gets to keep in the millinery circuit, while the jewelers stick to jewelry, handbaggers to bags etc… Now THAT could prove to have some interesting judging moments!

I was asked to try out for the Accessories show (I’m a handbag designer), and the requirements said you needed to be able to make shoes and jewelry as well as handbags. We’ll see how it goes!

  Now, I wait in eager anticipation of how they will dumb down the idea of “making” shoes into something that can be performed semi-successfully on t.v. in a limited time-frame by what in some cases will be complete amateurs.

I’m totally going to watch Project Accessory. I can actually make jewelry, so I’m going to have stronger opinions about this one.

Given the size of the jewelry-making/accessory-making/craft movement population (and the expansion of Michael’s and Hobby Lobby and the like into EVERY strip mall in America), I bet they’ll draw a decent audience. Potentially new viewers?

omg Debra Messing was THE worst judge ever. “Can you tell me about the story you were trying to tell with your collection?” over and over again ala “Oh my NOSE!” Shouldn’t she be on Hollywood Squares or something? She is the proverbial 100 percent stylist style. The minute the show ended so did her fashion cred.

I don’t know, in the art competition they made sculpturs do book covers and painters do sculptures. I would think that if you are a designer, you might have a speciality, but you need to be able to show that you can expand your business in order to win the competition. Same thing with PR. Just because you make your living selling jewelry does’t mean you don’t secretly want someone to produce your line of vegan platform sandals. I’ll watch – could be interesting and hopefully they all have mad skills. Or at least we’ll see someone cry because they don’t. ha!

What exactly does Miranda Kerr (whoever she is) have do with fashion. Isn’t she a VS model? Can they please get some models/actresses with real cred. Paging Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Naomi, Kate Moss!!!

Also, I think they should do a challenge about dressing an older woman v. chic and then make Helen Mirren the judge.

Maybe they have a doll/muppet costume challenge or something. I’m pretty sure ms piggy will make a funny judge. As long as it’s for an appropriate challenge i won’t mind.

It will be interesting to see how the application of similar materials will be translated by these designers. At least it sounds like it could be interesting…or maybe not.

I’m honestly more intrigued by PR: Accessory than All Stars (no Tim, AND Kenley AND now Miss Piggy on a show… love ya Mondo, but that’s a lot to combat), but the jury is very much out if I’ll be programming the whole series into my tivo. I’m just not sure what to expect or how the idea will pan out in practice and the curiosity is good enough to make me try an episode or two.

Clearly I’m very late to the party. Just crammed the first 3 episodes and was disappointed. The quality of the work is really bad.
That may be a talent issue but I suspect it’s more that the producers didn’t adapt to what really needs to be done – accessories require technical knowledge and time to make well. Their mentor – while very accomplished – has none of the requirements necessary to be a mentor in the studio. I pity the designers when they get to handbags – disaster looms..
Having taught at SCAD and FIT in both fashion and accessories departments for many years I hope they can retool by the second season – it will be worth it. If the work is good – it won’t matter who judges.
