It’s certainly an attention-grabbing t-shirt, I’ll give her that. Still can’t get my mother’s line, “Only tramps wear heels with jeans” out of my head, and it’s got to be what, 40 years now?
Crocs — yeah — I used to be a preschool teacher, and we HATED them. They fall off, the kids can’t run as well in them as they can in sneakers or plain old shoes, and they get playground (wood) chips stuck in them every six seconds, causing wailing and fussing and even the occasional splinter or injury. I’ll never understand why parents see them as actual shoes. They’re more like flipflops with covered toes.

The same thing happened to me! Kids I got in my old day camp were always tripping up trying to run in Crocs. And you NEED the kids to be able to run in order to keep a sane day camp/nursery/childcare thing going on. My goodness.

  Do you have children? If so, are they old enough to speak and give opinions and commentary on things? I learned to be careful of proclamations about kids after I had them. There is no place for Crocs at school or on trips to the zoo, museum, etc. But, running quick errands? They are easier than getting a 4-year old to put on his socks and shoes and get out the door in a timely manner. Plus, you know, he kinda likes them on the weekend. Heidi has 4 kids, all with their own opinions in life. I’m cuttiing her slack on the crocs, as I’ve never seen HER wear them.

    I second that. I never bought anything pink for my daughter (not easy), until she was about three and decided that it was the only color she’d wear. Rather than wrestling her into the clothes I decided she should wear, which doesn’t work anyway, she was head to to hot pink for a year and a half. She’s outgrown this, thankfully, but unless you’re prepared to beat your child, which I am not, sometimes a compromise on Crocs is in order. Luckily my daughter has also decided Crocs aren’t cool anymore, but I almost wish they were as it totally saves time.

      Yah. And Snopes (which I love) points out that any kind of shoe or garment can be a problem. Making your kid behave on the escalator… just one of many wonderful things parents have to be terrified about. Try googling swimming pool drain accidents sometime. I couldn’t sleep for a week. My point being that anything can be a hazard. As I said, we’ve had two escalator entrapments and neither involved Crocs. Stuff happens (to paraphrase Forest Gump).

I really don’t hate Crocs. I actually own a pair and they are very comfy. As an adult, however, I understand that there is a time and place for them. I think kids can get away with wearing them more often, though. An earlier comment said something about school and I agree. You shouldn’t let your kids wear them if they will be running or doing P.E style activities. But out running some errands with Mom? Why not? I mean, it could be worse. I love my Crocs, I admit. I do have the Mary Jane style, however, which are slimmer and stay on better, and I’m just walking from my house to the school, or around the grocery store. The boots look great – except something looks ridiculously OFF in these pics.

The extreme heel height and arch would make it seem almost like (point/toe) ballerina level. and then looking the last pic where her calf muscle is and it looks like her ankle is near the cuff, her foot would have to be like 18 inches long for this to make sense visually to me.

Heidi might not be responsible for the Crocs. Have you tried arguing with your kid about what they’re going to wear? It’s an exhausting process and the energy is better saved for getting them to eat their vegetables. You have to pick your battles.

That sweater is very…80s. And not in a good way! And just to be a dissenting voice, I really don’t like those boots, they make her feet look oddly elongated, like she’s got flippers in there or something. I can tell they’re very fashionable but those are some weird proportions going on there! Crocs – my daughter loves them what can I say? I know the feet people say they’re awful for small feet, and they’ve caused more injuries while running among the small set than anything else I know, but if it means one less fight in the morning getting her off to school she can wear them. They tend to take them off and run barefoot anyways, kids aren’t stupid enough to wear uncomfortable shoes – unlike us adults!

I have wonderful Croc sandals. They are by far the most comfortable shoes I own, beating out shoes that cost 8X as much (had I bought them new, which I didn’t). But I am an adult, not a small child who’s still working on balance and coordination. (OK, to be fair, I do still work on balance and coordination, but I don’t RUN.)

I guess if it doesn’t matter to you what your child’s preschool teacher knows from her many years of experience, then by all means allow your child to go to preschool unable to run and play as freely as children wearing shoes or sneakers. Right up there with the moms who let their little girls wear dress-up high heels to school, without packing real shoes and making sure the teacher knows the kid has them. I always thought my preschool director showed a serious lack of spine not laying down a no-Crocs rule. It would have saved a lot of tears and trips to the bathroom to fix boo-boos.

Wearing Crocs has made my feet stronger because my toes have to be active while walking in such a large shoe. Having stronger feet helps a lot with my plantar facistis. Of course the plantar facistis may have come from years of high heels. Sure Crocs are kind of hideous but wincing in pain while walking wasn’t pretty either.

  Last year I also got a horrible case of plantar fascitis. I went to Walmart and picked up some inexpensive Dr. Scholl’s inserts for PF and after wearing them a couple of days, there was a remarkable difference. I read later they are as effective as the expensive ones you get when you go to a doctor. You might want to give them a try also.

That’s the reason I wear wooden Bstad clogs–they strengthen all your foot muscles by forcing your toes to hang onto them while walking. And nothing beats them for back support. They are kinda ugly, too, but my feet love them so I’ll continure to wear them! Of course–never for a party or dinner–just while running errands and/or spending long hours in the kitchen.

Maybe the kid picked her own Crocs. Gotta be honest — those things are insanely comfortable. I had foot surgery a few months ago, and my Crocs are the only things that fit and are comfortable on my swollen foot. After trying to stuff the swollen (surgeried) one into anything attractive, I have been lighting candles to thank whoever is out there for sending me Crocs.

As for the Crocs, my daughter BEGGED me for a pink pair when she about 7. I gave in. Now she has a plain black pair (no holes) for garden work and tending the chickens. At 12, I don’t think she’d be seen in them outside the house.

the only thing i have to say is kids are never ~subjected to crocs. as a nanny and former daycare worker, kids love the hell out of crocs. hahaand they are easy to get on and off, good for kids. oh lawd i never thought i would see the day i would be defending crocs. hate myself a little.

The most important takeaway about Crocs: they do actually have relatively cute rubber flats that are not nearly as monstrous as the originals. (Emphasis on the “relatively” – they are still rubber shoes.) If you are wearing the clunky classics, you are still unnecessarily wearing a fug, dumpy shoe, since the comfort and durability concerns are moot. If you are wearing Crocs that look like Crocs…that is not really cool. (Kids don’t count. I get why kids like them. I don’t really get why moms like them. Do you want to wear your daughters’ sparkly butterfly jeans too?) Gardening could be ok in them. Leaving your garden in them…not so much. It’s like pajama pants at the grocery store. We all know how long it takes to put on real pants and real shoes, and we all know that you understandably tired moms and lazy college students have the same 60 seconds total it takes to get both tasks accomplished.

I’m largely ethnically German. In Europe people spoke German to me as a first guess. And I like the way I look, but it is nothing like Heidi. I can’t even see the shoes or the shirt because she is so amazing looking, even in casual clothes.

As for the crocs: you think she is ‘subjecting her children to crocs.’ Please. They are subjecting her. Every day they want to wear their crocs and I say, ‘why don’t you put on your pretty sandals or wear your new sneakers?’ but until it gets cold, I might as well be suggesting they wear a top hat and tails. Of all the battles I have to have with my children every day, what they are putting on their feet is just not a priority. Half the time we get in the car and I panic and say, ‘is everyone wearing shoes?’ Cause if they are, that’s good enough for me.

I on the other hand would not be caught dead in them.

TLo. Crocs are the perfect kids shoes. And they only look cute on children anyways, so it’s ok. I like that she put her kiddos in some normal cheapie shoes like all moms do. However she looks way better than any other mom I know. Bitch.

heidi looks svelte and beautiful here, but she looks a little pissed off. i think she’s marching her kids out to the car one by one so they’ll stop hitting each other for a minute. but she’s still wearing those screaming high boots!

this is one of those photos where her face looks different to me, like i might not recognize her without the captions (but i’ll never forget those legs). someone commented about possible surgical work, but i think maybe it’s just weight loss. i adore the sweater, but then i’m a total dog nut. i believe dogs are the creator’s finest work. it’s my religion. dog is my co-pilot.

and I find them totally acceptable for puttering around a garden or walking on the beach. They are easy to rinse off. I won’t let my children play on the playground with them or wear them to school. They are beach/pool/run errands with mom shoes.

Oh Crocs are fine on kids. They love them–comfy and funny all at once. Heidi looks good–but I can’t imagine how she is bopping around town and going to the playground in those 5 inch heels. Girl must have some strong ankles….

There are very few people who can wear a borderline Cosby sweater and manage to make it look chic and hip. It’s the “Oh I just threw on a sweater and some jeans with a pair of boots to pick up the kids and run errands.” Only when I do it, it’s a sweater I bought @ target and banana republic jeans that are too tight because I’ve gained weight and haven’t bothered to buy new ones. In short, it’s what all of us wish we could look like running errands: chic without trying too hard.

As for the Crocs – I will defend them once again – they are some of the most practical shoes out there for kids and adults if your day involves getting wet, going to the beach, getting in and out of boats or climbing around on rocks. They provide incredible traction which also make them great for climbing around on playground equipment. Furthermore, kids love them, so as a mom you have to choose your battles.

That sweater is pretty ugly in my eyes – it reminds me of those super heavy, super plush blankets you see at dusty roadside markets, picturing landscapes with animals.

As for the Crocs, I find it easy to avoid that battle with my child because I don’t purchase them. My 75 year-old father wears them when working in his vegetable garden. I guess I put them in the same category as steel-toed boots – for folks with specific work needs, like nurses or chefs.

I’ve seen some comment wishing Heidi had put some makeup on, but I was super jealous of how great she looked without any! I never leave the house without at least mascara or eyeliner because without I have invisible lashes and rabbitty eyes. This isn’t a formal photo-op so I think she looks fab.

Krist those boots are fierce. And hate to break it to you TLO, but kids love crocs. They’re comfy and come in bright colors and are virtually indestructible. I doubt her kids are forced to wear them so much as they force her to watch them wear them.

I loathe crocs, but love that her kids are wearing ‘normal’ kids clothes. PLus, Leni looks like a kid, not a teenager. I wish more people would remember that kids are just kids!

As for Frau Samuel, besides hating her for looking that awesome without the full make-up treatment, I like that she is willing to go a more natural route with her kids. It’s refreshing, she doesn’t look like she just rolled out of bed, but the isn’t all made up. Very nice.
