Harper’s Bazaar: The Age of Scorsese

Oooh, this is kind of fun. Sure, restaging iconic scenes from movies is kind of overdone in the world of fashion editorials, but this just hits all our buttons. Harper’s Bazaar collaborated with Martin Scorsese and recast some of his most famous films using today’s stars wearing today’s fashion. It’s pretty cleverly done and while some of the matchups only pale in comparison – You, Kate Bosworth, are no Michelle Pfeiffer, and Keanu, you sure as HELL ain’t no De Niro – some of them are damn intriguing. We’d pay good money to see Christina Hendricks re-shoot Cameron Diaz’s horribly miscast part in Gangs of New York, and Emily Blunt in the part of — but we’re giving too much away. Eclectic Mayhem

Wow, Keanu looks completely vacant here. D’you guys know that there’s a stage version of Point Break where all the parts are played by professionals except for Keanu’s role; they drag a member of the audience out for that one and get about the same quality of performance!

I love Ellen Burstyn and Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Emily Blunt looks great with the blond bob.

    I remember reading an article once, it was in Details or something, about how much of an intellectual Keanu is in person. Like, he still acts like Ted, but Ted with an opinion on Proust.
    
    I sometimes wonder if he would seem like a better actor if you actually knew him… like when you talk to me in person, I barely move my face at all, and my voice does all of the work and my pitch and tone change dramatically throughout the course of a conversation. When I was in high school, all of my friends who were drama geeks thought I was a great actress and never could understand why I never got cast in any of the plays, even as an extra. Finally, one of them asked the teacher who directed all of the plays what he had against me, and we finally realized that if you don’t know that that that’s just how I naturally talk, you would probably think that I am a terrible over actor. My new goal is now to become important enough that there will be a bio-pic about me, just so that some actress can have a hell of a time trying to emulate my mannerisms.

  The shirt is most definitely from the YSL Resort 2012 collection. I have no idea what’s Louis Vuitton in the second photo. My guess would be the hat, but I haven’t been able to confirm it.

I know it fits the theme of the shoot, but in general the overt sexualization of Chloe Moretz, first by Chloe Moretz and then by everyone else is so disturbing to me.

that was fun, actually. Jodie Foster’s baby-hooker-off-the farm-look in Taxi Driver is so iconic that I mentally named the reference in a nanosecond. I hadn’t realize Foster had achieved Jackie-in–her-bloodstained-pink-suit status until seeing this. would not have recognized Christina Hendricks w/o a caption.

Love this editorial, but then again I’m old enough to have seen all of these movies when they were shown in theaters.

Jodie’s portrayal of a child prostitute is lodged in the collective cultural psyche. Still disturbing.

But these images are really fun as well. Imagine a waitress slinging hash in a shirt costing $1,205. It is to laugh.

Wow! I used to walk by Robindira Unsworth’s hole in the wall office constantly, as they were down the hall from my therapist! I had no idea they were getting such press. Being draped over Christina Hendricks’s chest is probably the best advertisement you can get.

Spot on with Christina Hendricks. C. Diaz was too much of a “modern” beauty to have been considered a beauty in the Victorian era. And she would have been thought of as skinny, especially in the mileau in which the movie is set.

Frankly, I love the way Keanu speaks. It brings to mind both Gary Farmer and Willem Dafoe, two more of my favorite actors, and all three have the same trait; there’s a delay in their responses, and speaking seems to take a conscious effort. Another one is Chloe Webb…it’s as if articulation has to be plotted first. And I find this quality endearing. Especially in a time where just anyone can say anything, I find it reassuring that there’s at least one thinking before speaking.

As for the pictures, they’re lovely as pictures; I’d pass on the movie remakes themselves, though.

It’s a good editorial when it comes to the iconic movies… but some are just too “new” to be portrayed by models. Like Gangs of New York – Cameron Diaz and Leonardo di Caprio are still at the height of their careers, so it’s just a little weird.

But I love, love, love Scorsese movies, even though I close my eyes at the violence.
