We feature a TON of celebrity fashion editorials here, but most of the time, it’s conventionally pretty ladies wearing conventionally pretty clothes, smiling into the camera or looking off into the distance. Nothing wrong with that; we’ve certainly praised quite a few of them for it; but it does get a bit old after awhile. What we love about these pictures is that it’s not simply a pretty girl in pretty clothes. Flo really knows how to work a camera. Not in the, say, Beyonce or Rihanna sense; just that she has loads of charisma and a real sense of herself. We’re going to piss off any of the old punks in the readership, but she reminds us quite a bit of a young Patti Smith that way – if Patti had liked wearing makeup and lots of really expensive clothes.

When I saw the photos, my first thought was that she reminded me of a younger, glammed up Patti Smith. You nailed it. She has her own sense of style that’s unconventional, but not outrageous.

I like the cover photo best, perhaps since she looks amused rather than angst-ridden and full of secret sorrows. Her music is wonderful and she’s a stunning model, but her facial expressions (or lack thereof) get boring. She’s not a teenager any more. It’s okay to move those facial muscles sometimes! And maybe sometimes style that hair differently?

  Florence and the Machine’s first album was released two years ago–yet Florence is relevant enough to be appearing on magazine covers over two years later. Six singles from her first album were released, several of them charting highly. The music has been heard on film and in video games. Her recent iTunes Buzz single’s video hit one and a half million views in two days. The album Lungs was critically praised and is loved by many.
  
  Your dismissive comment that no is going to know about her next year is silly. Two-plus years after her first album and she is popular and relevant, to music, fashion, and culture. She has already proven her staying power–and your statement that she is a one-hit wonder is already factually incorrect, both from a musical perspective as well as a fashion perspective. (Consider, for example, the many times she has rightfully appeared in this very blog.)
  
  I don’t know that the upcoming album will be successful. But I do know that she has moved people, and continues to do so. That’s not a one-hit wonder–that’s a talent. You may not recognize it, but that doesn’t make her any less of an artist. And an important one, at that.

    The releases from the new album are doing just fine. Glad to see their doing well in the US, so many UK acts don’t cross over to the US so well. They’re certainly well ensconced in the UK, they have been for a long time and show no signs of waning. They built a strong indie following in their earlier days who’ve stuck with them. Calling them one hit wonders is just laughable. There are plenty of TV talent show finalists to qualify for that term, using it for a talented and successful band is just odd!

So, so fabulous and totally feeling the Patti Smith vibe too. However, the shot second from the bottom is HORRENDOUS. Not because of Flo, but because of that godawful filter crap going on. If I turned that in for my intro to graphic design studio class, I’d be laughed out of the building.

Perfect. And it’s a good comparison – Florence to Patti and back again. I know this isn’t in the IN or OUT category, or in the WERQ category – but Florence’s looks and poses and personality - so so so much better than that chick – Amber I think her name was, in the red dress slit up to there, with the crappy hair style. Just saying.

Lipstick out nail polish out shiny out hair business out fancy shoes out jewelry out and, bless her forever, tatoos out and so and so forth–out out and out. Other than that, yeah a Patti vibe.
  
  Patti sported the straight up shooting gallery Bowery look circa 87. Which would make for a terrific PR challenge. Sawdust on the floor, no doors, communal ****hole. Make it work.

She reminds me of the 70s and 80s when real female rockers ruled the airways along with the men. Chrissie Hynde, Pattie Smyth, Pat Benatar, Grace Slick, Joan Jett. Damn I miss those ladies. Now it’s all manufactured pop singers with no real style of their own.

I’ve never really listented to her music so I don’t know what her “vibe” is, but I like these pictures. I also really dig the finger tattoo, though I wonder if it hurt. I’m guessing HELL YES.
