Elle’s Women in Hollywood

For its November issue, Elle magazine got a bunch of Hollywood legends, current stars, and up-and-comers to sit down for their cameras and bring out their inner supermodels. Everyone looks great, but Babs, Michelle, Viola and Freida really stand out. We’re sorry to say Evan Rachel Wood looks like a mask. Elizabeth Olsen’s giving good ingenue, though. And poor Aniston is stuck talking about her biological clock again. We don’t know if that’s just savvy marketing on her part or she’s constantly getting saddled with these kind of questions in interviews, but she sounds like she’s sick of it.

Barbra Streisand
Barbra Streisand wears clothes from her closet, including a shirt and vest from Mr. Alex Custom Shirtmaker, Beverly Hills, jewelry by Sheryl Lowe Designs, and shoes by Chanel.

On her career:
“I don’t get a lot of offers to either direct or act. I’m still a kind of threatening object. I was offered They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?, but you had to dance through the whole movie—I got tired just reading the script. I was offered Klute, but I was seeing someone at the time and didn’t want to work. I was offered Julia, but I was editing A Star Is Born. As I say to Jane Fonda, ‘I’m responsible for your career.’ Because I turned down those movies and she got them and she was wonderful in them. Now people want me for a specific role.”

Michelle PfeifferMichelle Pfeiffer wears a 1950s vintage James Galanos dress from Decades, L.A.

On being cast as Al Pacino’s trophy wife in Scarface:
“I was terrified the whole time. I was so out of my league with all of these seasoned actors. Here I was, this little waify thing in these little flimsy clothes, and who was I? I was the girl from Grease 2!”

Evan Rachel Wood Evan Rachel Wood wears a silk jacket and skirt from Stella McCartney, a T-shirt from American Apparel, a velour hat from Eugenia Kim, a crystal, metal, and resin necklace from Tom Binns Design, cone bracelets with crystals from Eddie Borgo, and link bracelets (some with diamonds) from David Yurman.

On her nude scenes:
“I learned that I needed to control the situation in order not to be too self-conscious. I said to myself, I’m an awesome naked lady, and there’s an energy that I’m going give off right now that lets you know how you’re going to feel about this.”

Stacey Snider

On whether she ever experienced the equivalent of the casting couch:
“The only way the gender divide affected me was the social things the younger guy executives could do with their bosses. I don’t know what went on in the clubs, because I didn’t go. I made sure my work was stellar and that compensated for whatever social time we weren’t spending together.”

Naomi WattsNaomi Watts wears a T-shirt and jeans from Calvin Klein, leather boots from Giuseppe Zanotti for Balmain, and a white gold and diamond necklace and bracelets from Cartier.

On her breakthrough role in Mulholland Drive:
“It was a game-changer, but I knew I had to be careful. You can get a lot of attention and still be gone in a flash.”

Viola DavisViola Davis wears a metallic dress from Lanvin, white gold earrings from David Yurman, antique diamond sunburst pins from
Beladora.com, and suede pumps from Giuseppe Zanotti Design.

On whether the quality of parts offered to her changed after her Oscar nomination:
“If I’m honest, I would say no. The money changed. The visibility changed. The quality of the roles? No. I’ve been blessed to have been cast in some imaginative roles, but there’s generally a lack of opportunity for women of color in Hollywood.”

Freida PintoFreida Pinto wears a silk dress from Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci, tuxedo jacket from 3.1 Phillip Lim, and velour cocktail hat from Leah C. Couture Millinery.

On being the older woman in her relationship with Dev Patel:
“I don’t think the age factor is any kind of annoyance—I find him to be more of an old soul than I am. His wisdom comes from a place that’s very difficult to pinpoint: How did a 21-year-old think of that?”

Elizabeth Olsen Elizabeth Olsen wears a cashmere cotton sweater from Calvin Klein Collection and yellow gold watch from Omega.

On what made her want to act:
“Watching old Frank Sinatra musicals when I was, like, 6. I wanted to be one of the love interests when I got older.”

Jennifer Aniston Jennifer Aniston wears a cotton tank top from Balmain, satin shorts from Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquière, yellow gold necklace with diamonds from Cartier, and link bracelets (some with diamonds) from David Yurman.

On the baby rumors:
“But it’s not what you read. There’s no desperation. If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be. I’m at peace with whatever the plan is. But will you hate me if I say I don’t want to talk about my relationship?”
