Darlings, for your pretty of the day, let’s all look at depressed, possibly psychotic girls in gorgeous clothes.

“Gothic Glam” is definitely the right phrase for this one. The clothes, as we said, are gorgeous. So is the styling. We could have done without the slightly overwrought feeling throughout, but hey, sometimes a girl just wants to put aside the cutting and the writing of bad poetry and just spend the day pondering the Dark Meaning of Things in really expensive clothing.

The spread is too dark for me. (not so much the mood but the lack of light)

My vision is not as good as it once was – but I don’t need it so dark that it makes my vision seem worse than it is.

Amazing how they have taken some relatively benign looking clothes and styled them into a Edgar Allen Poe Frenzy. It manages to work somehow. Of course some of the ensembles are pretty out there, but the majority are actually fairly wearable clothing, minus the bird wings, skulls and Paranoid Schizophrenic expressions on the models.

You know, when I was depressed I never looked like that. Goths kill me, they really do — no one who’s really disturbed has the energy to put into their appearance that much.

      I’m not sure. All of the Goths I know, and I used to be way more into the scene than I am now, are actually all pretty fun loving people. They just happen to love the aesthetic, the music, the fun of wearing whatever the hell you want. Certainly not depressed, and most have a great sense of humour.

      Exactly. This is such a mistaken stereotype. I suppose it comes from mixed up teenagers who’ll find something to mope about anyway, and so flirt with goth subculture for a while. But being a goth does not equal being depressed! There’s plenty of perfectly merry, happy and well-balanced people of all ages out there who called or still call themselves goths!

      I think a large part of the thinking that goth=depressed is from things like this editorial, where the women appear depressed and the title is that it is goth. Then you have so many young people who identify themselves as goth and attempt suicide, so there is a correlation made between the two. Did you ever see the South Park episode where Stan becomes Goth b/c he’s heartbroken? Right or wrong that perception is what most people have about goths.

        Yes, but the editorial is “gothic” not “goth.” It’s not the same. Gothic is overwrought, neurotic, obsessed with death. Goths dress in black.

        The models don’t look any more depressed than in most other editorials to me.
        Just because some mixed-up teenagers become goths (or something they think of as goth) doesn’t mean goth = depressed. Certainly it’s probably a subculture that is more introspective and cerebral and tends to attract kids who feel a bit outside and aren’t interested in gangs/fights/cars/fake-tan etc. But goth equaling depression is just another incorrect stereotype. The person all in black isn’t necessarily any less happy than the person in day-glo pink – they just have better taste

  I know, give me my sweats, ratty slippers. ben & jers, right ipod tune and call it a day! Oh, I might exchange said ben & jers for Jim ( Jim Bean:) ). But I guess if you’re gonna put effort into dressing for your depress state this is certainly the way to go.

Some gorgeous clothes and definitely a lot of effort for a certain style they pulled off well, for what it is. Maybe it is the old bitchy queen in me but I really feel if you are lucky enough to be wearing thousands of dollars of couture clothing, you should look nothing but thrilled, happy, ecstatic or at the very least, comfortable and serene. Depressed? No…..

Very nice. And I like that they’ve chosen clothes that aren’t predictably gothic but still capture the mood and work with the styling. Should be shown to some youngsters to illustrate that it doesn’t need to be all crushed velvet and pvc, that a bit more imagination works wonders!

I can see no reason to exhibit clothes this way. Not only can you not really see them they are overwhelmed by the so called artistic display. The question is was this supposed to show off the merchandise or showcase the photographer’s bad art. If it was the latter it was done splendidly; if the former a failure. It is sometimes unbeliveable what passes as artistic. This spread is only good fpr lining a birdcage.

Great editorial, perfect for fall. I love that the clothes are the focus, too, as opposed to some more recent editorials that seem to be more about exploiting the model or a concept.

God, I love that Miu Miu coat dress. I would wrestle a bear for a chance to have that in my wardrobe. A small bear. And we wouldn’t actually hurt one another. We’d just pillow fight.

Doesn’t really feel “goth” to me, it’s just some bored looking models with vines and branches. The makeup and clothing don’t look particularly gothic OR glam… pretty disappointed in this one.

I don’t see Gothic or Goth here. I see some black clothes and some red shot in bad light. This shoot isn’t even close to capturing the aesthetic of either, even if by “Gothic” they meant “pretentious kids who shop at Hot Topic.” A couple of the dresses could have been styled in the Gothic Lolita manner, but they weren’t. The Goth scene is old enough and complex enough at this point that the stylists really should have known better. My guess is they do know better, but assumed their audience doesn’t so they felt free to give it a semi-edgy sounding name.
