Venice Film Festival Red Carpet – Day 2

Hey, kids! It’s Friday! Let’s do a quick rundown of red carpet highlights from Day Two of the Venice Film Festival and say short, bitchy things about each outfit! Okay? Okay!

It gets a little “saloon girl” up around the bustline, but the rest of it is fabulous. We just wish she’d done something better with her hair.

Oh, HONEY. We don’t much like the Martha Mitchell hair, but once you move down past that, it all starts getting very pretty. Then you hit the crotch and it all goes wrong.

Hey. We think we just coined a fashion term. When a dress looks great except for one really bad idea, that’s called “hitting the crotch.” Usage: “Man, that dress was fine until we got to the sheer lace skirt, then it all just hit the crotch.”

We are very thankful that she or her stylist insisted on a top to go with this dress. It’s a really gorgeous dress, but that is so not her color and the rather underplayed makeup doesn’t help. It’s beautiful, but it’s not her dress.

We don’t know… it’s all a bit Star Trek-y, especially with the pompadour hair. Plus, we don’t think that wing effect works as well on a woman with a decent-sized pair of boobs. It really alters the effect and kind of makes the top 3rd of the dress look like it’s inflated.

Abbie Cornish — I liked the shape of the runway version much better. Asia Argento — “hitting the crotch”….Love it! Andrea Riseborough — pretty; runway version looks like the model was doing a “I dreamed I was a runway model in my Maidenform bra” print ad. Kate Winslet — something about this is not quite right; maybe it’s that drab color. She looks so washed out.

  I’m with you! Kate looks amazing. Having the fuller chest actually makes this dress, rather than takes away from it (it looks better on her than the model). It isn’t high drama, like the saloon dress, but it is striking.

Disagree strenuously on Andrea Riseborough. The color is perfect with her complexion, and she is so lovely and dewy that I’d hate to see her in heavier makeup. The only thing I can object to is her overplucked eyebrows.

I can’t get past the color on Kate Winslet’s dress. That color needs to be retired from the visible spectrum.

If Kate’s hair had been softer and she had a bit more color on her lips, that dress would have been lovely. And I think her bewbs look GREAT in this dress. I don’t think the dress is the problem; it is the styling.

I also disagree re: Andrea Riseborough. The loose, dark hair is a great counterpoint to the pale color of the dress, and keeps the look from veering into Disney territory. A bit more eye makeup might have been welcome, but I think she looks really good. Not revolutionary or anything, but beautiful.

Abbie Cornish – Not loving the corseted top, hate the hair. The lower half of the dress is pretty.
Asia Argento – Prom hair, cute top, then as mentioned, it hits the crotch. That sheer bottom look only works on a handful of people. It ain’t working here.
Andrea Riseborough – Pretty dress and makeup, just not the color for her. She needs a deeper tone. Same dress in chocolate or navy would work much better.
Kate Winslet – Pretty dress, but it looks too tight and the boobs are fighting the design elements on the top. hair is a bit too severe.

Cornish in Versace – love the dress but I fear it looks chip on anything other than a model-esque figure. Chip in an expensive way.
Argento in Ferretti. Chip. Chip in a chip way.
Riseborough in Dior. I like it on her. I shouldn’t, but I do. I wish a little more care to the hair and more dramatic makeup.
Winslet in Beckham. The bosom/shoulder parts are a bit much for her, but she’s giving it her best. Has she always tried to look so much like The Serious Actress? Didn’t she used to have a little more fun? Maybe it’s just my addled brain.

I don’t like scary Winslet, I wish she’d go away. I’d like the nice one back.

Not sure on Andrea Riseborough’s frock. I kind of wish they’d put a contrast top on it, or a deeper shade.

I don’t dislike Asia Argento’s. Ok, it’s a bit Cher lite, but she has enough edge to carry it off.

Abbie Cornish – I love that gown on the model, but not on her. The sheer areas are too much on her version, and the bodice doesn’t suit her shape. And although I understand why they’ve done it, losing the petticoat/structure under the skirt has taken a lot of the drama away.

I really love that Beckham dress, but it looks like the top portion should’ve been a skosh bigger for Kate making it lay better on her shoulders. Otherwise, I like it…hate the hair though.

The only thing keeping this from a FUCK YEAH, KATE WINSLET is the neutral palette. With glam makeup and a stronger color it could have been amazing. And how I’d love to see that gorgeous Dior on someone it doesn’t wash out!

Kate’s dress seam is giving her VP, if you view it from the back. I saw a pick from the back earlier and it’s really bad. But the color is good on her and it does show off her slammin’ curvy bod. I’m not a fan of the pompadour with this look, though I guess it keeps it more edgy.

I think the ‘problem’ with the Winslet look is the triangle formed by the shoulder treatment and the hair (the camera angle might be a contributing factor). I really love the asymmetry in the runway styling and I think Kate would have benefitted from it.

Andrea looks like a princess. The color’s not bad on her, and the make-up is fine. Don’t over-do the make-up to take away from the gorgeous dress.

That dress is wrong for Abby in the bust. She’s too built up top (bust, shoulders, etc) for that dress.

  Well, if you saw her from the back, as mentioned above by RebeccaKW, you might change your mind. VPL. And, this dress is just plain too tight on her. Slammin’ curves she definately has, and I applaud her for flaunting them, but a size up would still be slammin’ and look a whole lot better. Plus, I agree this color is not most women’s best friend. Very difficult to wear.

Abbie looks CHEAP. Partly because of the styling, but mostly because the dress is too saloon-y on anyone with a bit of flesh on their bones. And is it too tight? I think so.

I think every single one of these ladies looks awesome. Have to admit, at first glance I didn’t like Ms Winslet’s look at all. But then I tilted my head and furrowed my brow, and then I liked it. Would have done a different lip, but I think she looks fierce.
