  i didnt understand this when i first saw them choose twenty & immediately eliminate four –& this for no discernible design reason. but now i am absolutely positive they chose them for their capacity for combativeness & potential for personality problems: who they seemed to be vs what they seemed to be able to do.
  
  stuck in a room w/ other people i think becky or bert or julie or oliver or maybe even cecilia would have done much better work than they did {even tho i didnt like cecilia’s portfolio at all, i think even she wouldve done better w/ less poison floating around}. it’s really hard to work amid hostilities, even worse amid rewarded hostilities. i’m pretty sure the ascendance of a few really noxious people is why we’re seeing the very very bad work we are seeing each week on PR. not to mention why we’re seeing all these stupid team challenges.

It’s unfortunate, but nonetheless true that the “mouth breather” pose is a stock go to look for fashion and advertizing since pretty much forever. Look at a bunch of classic fashion ads and just count how many times Suzy Parker, Dovima, Twiggy, and other models used just that same expression.

    Looking at the image again there is a curious disconnect between us and her. She appears to be looking at us, but isn’t quite doing so, so the needed connection that strikes the spark is missing. Perhaps that’s the source of the problem. All those other models I mentioned engaged the camera fully. When they looked at you, you by god KNEW that you were being looked at.

Of course if cornered the ad biz people would say its not a demeaning sexualization of women to imply their readiness to be “orally focused” shall we say; but that its an empowering image of women taking control of their sexuality. Not because he’s necessarily the most talented of the winners, but because he seems to have an innate sense of how to operate the business of it as well as the art of it. (Since they’re giving away money to start a line as the grand prize, wouldn’t it make sense for the show to have some business-centered challenges to master?)

  Good idea. I think of Trump-style reality shows where in group challenges they have to design, build and market their idea. Hell, even on RuPauls’ Drag Race the girls have to hit to streets to sell something at least once during the show (and not themselves).

    Maybe for one challenge, instead of just giving everyone the same money, they have to sell their idea to various “investors,” and the amount they get out of a general pot is proportional to the number of points awarded by said investors… (ETA, or, they could make it a two-challenge thing. The first challenge is “design your own outfit for meeting with important investors. The second is to wear said outfit to a meeting and get the actual money for the next challenge.)
    
    I just remember hearing an interview with PPS where he was talking about all of his corporate collaborations, and he said, very sensibly, something like, “Well, if I don’t make some money on shoes and ready-to-wear, I can’t afford to make couture collections and keep people working for me.” So not what I expect out of artsy types that I almost fell out of my chair.

It does look like a doll dress/Disney princess dress, etc–but I like that about it. It’s a pure fantasy gown pulled out of a cartoon and into the real world, which gives it a neat, magical feel, like it’s not quite of the world.

They cropped the dress just right for the ad, as it’s hideous on the runway, but just enough ruffles show in the photo to make it dreamy and ethereal. Plus they seem to have used a Photoshop ‘haze’ effect to make the ruffles less distinct, almost like foam.
