Well, and I think it’d be really hard to respond to the episodes as they air if you’d already seen the results of a challenge and met the designers in person during the judging panel. Not to mention the fact that you’d know who’d be auf’ed before you judged, so the first half of the season, you’d be doing write ups with that knowledge in mind.

I could see Burt having a difficult time with this precisely because of his age — they’re going to be looking for 70′s INSPIRED clothing and they are far more likely to see Burt’s as too literal because he was in fashion then.

My ideal judge would be Cate Blanchett. She knows fashion, she has a great deal of style, her look is versatile enough to provide the designers with a range of styles to work with.

Oh no — I take that back. I want Helen Mirren. She’s fabulous in every way. Cher would be fun too, mainly because she wouldn’t hesitate to tell something that they were insane to think she’d ever wear such a thing. And I can guarantee Cher results would be interesting because most of them would go OTT but do it badly. It takes a very special knack to go that tacky while still retaining enough style to rate a designer tag.

Just last week I was thinking about how fab it would be for Joan to be a judge on PR. She has honed her style to near perfection (her propensity for fur would put some people off), she knows her shit, and she wouldn’t mince words. Well, I needn’t have any good ideas for guest judges, the rest of you did it for me.

I like the Bowie & Iman pairing, or Patsy & Edina (In character all the way through. But they’d have to tack on an extra 10 minutes for a actresses, as themselves, at the end.) Possibly Cher – or Sewing Siren. I’d want Sewing Siren to be guaranteed time to actually talk about/with the designers and their work, none of these dismissive 10 second sound bites.

Not particularly pertaining to this challenge, but in general I would love to see Janie Bryant (costume designer for Mad Men) as a guest judge. I’m a big fan of the idea of having guest judges who have reached a high level of achievement in design/other creative discipline backgrounds outside of the fashion industry. Sometimes when it’s other designers it’s a bit too “I would never make that personally” and when it’s just celebrities it’s “I would never wear that personally.” I think if it’s an art or design person who isn’t too connected to fashion they can provide the best criticisms.

I totally agree. Janie Bryant is truly gifted at what she does. I think she would have some exceptional insight on the designs, and some great advice to give to the designers.

I’m OK with other designers as guest judges. Sometimes they’re great, and sometimes not so much (if only because they’re not given enough screen time), but they do have a relevant perspective that they could pass on to the PR designers. And god knows this bunch sure as hell needs guidance and perspective.

I really like the idea of having artists serve as guests judges, whether they’re painters or photographers or graphic designers. Apparently there are a lot of aspiring/young fashion designers out there who haven’t given much thought to how other kinds of art have a connection to fashion design.

Tim did end up as a judge for a finale one season, but even that was because JLo was scheduled and cancelled at the last second for some reason and they couldn’t find anyone. He has said repeatedly that he didn’t want to do it because he doesn’t find himself to be impartial.

Because I am fashion-designer impaired, I’m not really sure who I’d like to be guest judge. But I do know I’d want it to be someone who knows how to design and make the clothes rather than someone who knows how to wear them or has a stylist pick them out. I’m so over the starlet judges! Chances are you have a bag/purse with you and don’t use your bra as a wallet while running errands. Shopping in a big fabric warehouse is pretty physical. I’d be wearing workclothes. But then, what do I know? I wear scrubs at work, the equivalent of color coded pajamas. Thus my very practical nature when it comes to fabric shopping in NY.

  Not gonna lie I have used the boob wallet on occasion, but this year I bought a cross body bag for errand running. I’m not on Laura Bennett levels but I try not to walk around looking crazy. Every summer I buy a bunch of wash and wear easy dresses and a mix of cheap flats and cute flip flops. I am much more comfortable in them and I think like that it’s easy to add a pair of earrings and a swipe of lipgloss and still look half way decent.

  Actually, it’s got a pretty decent premise – the daughter in a family of all cops (father and 3 brothers are on the force) takes the detective’s exam, passes, but the only job available is in Internal Affairs. The conflict with her on the “rat squad” is messing a bit with the close family dynamic and so there’s automatic tension. It’s not an award winner but I think it’s a decent hour of TV each week. The lead is a younger Meg Ryan. And the cast is really good with the parents being played by Kathy Bates and Treat Williams.

I liked Models of the Runway, actually. Getting to see things from the models’ perspective and getting their opinions on the designers and garments made it easier to get attached to the girls, and even just knowing who they are. Alexis may have been a bit of a bitch, but at least I remember who she was. I doubt I could name any of the models from this season, and it’s almost over!

Here’s what I think happened: despite that fact that Anya’s maxi dress wasn’t particularly original, it was the piece the powers that be decided (1) could be made easily and inexpensively, and (2) would sell very well on Piperlime. Viktor’s would have been more complicated, would cost more, and wouldn’t appeal to everyone. Anya’s, they figure, will fly off the rack. Therefore, despite not being nearly as sophisticated as Viktor’s pieces, nor as charming as Bert’s little Allie McGraw dress, Anya’s wins.

After tonight there can be no doubt that the producers behind the scenes are controlling the outcome of the show. Anya. Really? That top was not very well made and the pants did not fit well at all. Victor’s was very well made, although I can see where the color may not have photographed as well as Anya’s second look. As for the losers, please. Anthony Ryan’s didn’t look great but Josh’s was a hot mess as was Laura’s. But the show needs the Josh drama, the Laura angst over clashing with Nina so neither of those two are going home. It’s not so much that I disagree with Anthony Ryan going home as his designs over the past few weeks have not been great, but it’s the fact that because he doesn’t bring the drama to the show. Whatever.

Okay, my two random cents:
1. I just think that win was bullshit. That’s now the second time Anya has won for a fairly pretty but not great look – and it’s the second time that the win has been taken from Viktor for something he made that was far superior to Anya’s look. His looks were gorgeous, and he was robbed. I know, I know – “the girl who can’t sew and lost all her money wins the challenge!” Wow, what a great story, right?! I mean, please – we’re not dumb enough that we don’t smell “producers pick” all over this one yet again. I get that this girl has a great backstory and is a great contestant, but that can’t be enough to award her two wins that should have been Viktor’s.
2. I do have to admit – it was DELICIOUS to find out, straight from TIm, that Nina hates Laura. GLORIOUS!
3. How awesome for Bert! Not only does he rightfully rock the 70s challenge, but they’re going to sell his dress, even though he didn’t win.
4. Really? Anthony goes home instead of Clinique Counter? Honestly? Would that be because CC makes far better TV than Anthony?
5. I LOVED the other designers pointing out to Clinique that “I wasn’t alive yet in the 70s” is no freaking excuse, especially if you’re a fashion designer.

In all fairness, while I agree that Viktor’s dress from the print challenge was vastly better than Anya’s, he didn’t use a print. He dyed the fabric. For a challenge that’s about using HP’s print manufacturing, it was entirely reasonable to refuse to give the win to a garment that didn’t use the thing that was the point of the challenge. Sometimes the intent of the challenge hasn’t been all that clear, but for that challenge, I don’t think you can argue that.

I don’t know. Maybe it’s that I think the ’70s are the most ridiculous decade of my life, but the only thing on that runway that I found remotely attractive was Bert’s second dress. The only thing I liked about the ’70s was the funky, optimistic kid-music vibe (“Free To Be…”, “Schoolhouse Rock” etc). The clothes… the decade should be erased from fashion history.

But, Josh, it hasn’t been so erased. So you have no excuse for not knowing it. Everyone else seemed to, and even if they didn’t going in, YOU WERE GIVEN A DOSSIER ON YOUR LAPTOP.

I would have given Bert the win, but I’m not upset about Anya getting it–if they like the jumpsuit, they like the jumpsuit. That I don’t like big print flowy jumpsuits is probably just me. Right?

The auf’ee, on the other hand? Yes, both of those guys turned out ass on the runway, but A.R. was just plain ass. Josh’s was elongated, emphasized super-ass.

Anya’s look may have been somewhat simple but remember, the challenge was to find something Piperlime could produce and sell. Their stuff is pretty basic and Anya’s jumpsuit fits right in. I think she deserved the win based on that criteria.

I was super surprised that Ayna won give that the Judges seemed to like Viktor’s and Bert’s looks so much more during the critique. I thought she was going to be in the bottom, and I think she did too. I think everyone on the runway thought she was in the bottom. i guess We should have seen it coming since pretty much the same dress won her the HiediiNewBalanceAmazondotcom challenge.

*&^%$#@!!! Are you *&^%$# kidding me? Shiny Ms. Hiney Clinique gets to stay even though his garments didn’t even remotely resemble a 70′s look? Since when was day-glo leopard 70′s? And those pants. And that awful shirt. GAH!!! And then he’s hugging Anthony at the end like he’s going to miss him? Bitch, please. You’d better have been thanking him and the fashion gods that your neck was spared once more.
As for the top three, I thought the second looks for each were better than the first. If Bert’s hot pants had been a decent length (although I did see a little drool on Frau Seal’s mouth when they came down the runway….but I digress), I think he would have won. LOVED his second look. If I-need-a-Midol-Victor had made the t-shirt with a plunging, flowy, “sexy” neckline, he’d have won (but I thought the suit looked a little bland, all that gray on gray). Anya won because the jumpsuit would “photograph” the best for online sale. I’m still very underwhelmed by what we’ve seen so far.

Viktor’s was also win-worthy, though I feel like Bert’s followed the challenge more and was more 70′s with a modern twist. IF they had to pick two looks, I’d say Viktor’s jacket and either of Bert’s looks. Anya’s? Really? That jumpsuit was NOTHING. It was all about a dramatic ending. How can Nina stand it?

When I was watching the designs come down the runway, it was apparent that Victor and Bert’s were on an entirely different level than the rest. The rest were poorly accessorized, and lacking a discernable design/voice/identity. I don’t understand some of those prints used and Josh, OMG, he made horrible 80′s clothes, WTF? Anthony Ryan didn’t make anything super heinous to deserve the “hippy sister-wife” jab. Hell, not even as bad as Josh or Laura’s eye searing print choices. I liked Anthony Ryan, I was getting over the accent sorta.

    Well, I understand the usual retail markup is 100%, so if you add in the designer-to-retailer markup, otherwise known as creativity and labor, it sort of make sense (and might even be pretty cheap). BUT, when you think about how $50 was emphasized on the show, you do kinda wonder who wants to pay $200 for that dress.

At least they picked the correct top and bottom three. I would have been happy to see either Josh or Blenley go home as each did a worse job than Anthony Ryan (though Laura’s second look wasn’t all that bad her first was horrid). I gasped – and not in a good way – when I saw the first outfits of Josh and Laura on the runway. I will say in his defense that the plaid Josh used was reminiscent of the early to mid-seventies – but the design and fit were terrible. Along with others, I just don’t get the Anya love. Never have and never will which means I fully expect her to be the winner this year. I would have given the win this week to Viktor.

I agree on the plaid- it was actually very 70′s- but BAD 70′s, and made worse by being poorly cut. His red and black shirt was like Star Trek The Next Generation at a formal affair- I didn’t hate it but it wasn’t 70′s at all. Josh knew nothing of the era and didn’t try to research- and he was VERY defensive about it.

Anthony Ryan committed the horrible sin of being dull. They’re going with Josh because he’s the drama villain of the season, but while his clothes weren’t great they certainly weren’t boring. Often the judges will pick a hot mess over competent but dull.

I know this is kind of obvious, but I would like to see blogger/photographer Scott Schuman of The Sartorialist as a guest judge. He has such a wonderful perspective and eye for fashion; often choosing subjects which lie outside conventional fashion boundaries. He also seems to have a wonderful insight into what people perceive as attractive, as well as an ability to see beyond the more obvious forms of inspiration when it comes to fashion and how a person can use style to convey their personal viewpoint.

  Totally agree. I have to say that I was impressed with what Anya was able to do after having lost her money, and I believe the judges were too. The decisive factor, though, was definitely the fact that Anya’s design was much simpler and easier to mass-produce. Bert’s dress as well. Shoot, I could probably sew that dress, and my sewing skills are quite basic.

but i have seen all sorts of post-PR designers selling stuff online. sometimes the pricepoint is ridiculously low, cf jay mccarroll {i just wish his available stuff was better, but i digress. his fabric is pretty good}. anyway, i havent seen viktor’s outfit yet. but if you really want it, i’m pretty sure you can check around online when the show ends & find him & get a copy of it. if he loses to anya {which is my guess, not cos i want it to happen}, i’m sure it wont be that hard to do.

I couldn’t get enough of a handle on Anya’s to tell how well it was made or exactly what was going on with it. They both looked like basic, if pretty, garments. Not win worthy from what I could see, but maybe some close-ups will change my mind. Viktor was the clear winner again, and again he was robbed.

I’m so sad my honey pie Anthony Ryan is gone. I was hoping that Josh or Laura would go instead, but I knew they weren’t going anywhere. I loved A.R.’s little hippie girl dresses. I just wish he had taken them up a level or two.

The judges were so brutal to Josh that I almost couldn’t watch it. But I couldn’t feel bad for him either, because that was some ugly crap. His reaction to anything but adoration is narcissistic rage: I’m the best and no one should expect anything of me other than my beingness. He was really injured by the notion that he should have had some sense of fashion history, as Victor rather quietly remarked. If he’s seen Almost Famous, he could have used Kate Hudson’s character as inspiration. But I never expected him to make it to the final three, and his work for this challenge wasn’t exactly stellar, so it wasn’t a complete surprise.

Seal would be great too. I like TLo’s suggestion that they should design for him and he would be the guest judge. It would certainly make more sense than designing for “The Sheepdogs”. No offense to them; I really respect them for being SUCH good sports about the whole thing, but they’re not exactly the most stylish group of men I have ever seen.

Agreed about Viktor’s tee. I suspect that Bert’s and Anya’s got picked because they are easy to cut and produce, whereas even the tee was quite a little masterpiece with the centered fabric and might be harder to pump out in quantities. That’s the only way I can explain why Viktor didn’t win: he put so much work into those pieces that they would be expensive to copy. Whereas Bert’s dress or Anya’s jumpsuit would be easy to size up or down, machine cut, and assemble.

  I really liked Bert’s dress. It was classic, covered you in the right spots, very easy to dress up or down–can wear almost anywhere. Anya’s– well, it is loose flowy, the print does the heavy lifting and side boob is a big problem. The problem with designing only with yourself in mind is that after a season or 2 you are known to be very one-note.

    I loved Bert’s dress too, but it’s definitely for a girl who doesn’t have a lot of curves. My boobs n butt, as much as I like them, would interrupt the clean lines of that dress and it just wouldn’t be very flattering, especially with the tie thing around the middle. But it’s a great little dress for a really slim girl.
    Anya’s jumpsuit was also great, and I think it could be worn by a woman with a chest. As with any outfit, it depends on the woman and how much cleavage she’s comfortable showing.

      His dress would be fine for a woman with a bust so long as it had darts to allow for the extra room needed, plus it is a knit– a double faced jersey. The jumpsuit can accomodate a large bust nicely with the gathers but would need some mechanism to rein them in as a bra would show on the side and middle. The elastic waist gathered bottom would make this more pajamamy feeling and will emphasize a little belly. This is definitely a “when are you due?” garment.

His Lousiana college girl/fashion forward good ol’ gal looks were all very young, very work-a-day, and kind of Tom Boy. She’s the best dressed girl at the bar. His woman shops at Kohls, indy shop in college towns and thrift stores and sometimes hits the Mall if she needs something special.That’s why Kors and Nina found his look so alien and sad.

Oh. My. God. Over the years, I’ve seen people post that the judging is so messed up that they won’t watch the show anymore. I’ve always dismissed that as being hyperbolic. However, last night’s proceedings left me feeling the same way. Anya’s just OK paper bag pants and a top she crafted out of dyed muslin and jump suit with pants that were SO OUT OF PROPORTION were rewarded. I would never buy anything she made. I applaud her for her “make it work” moment. I think she rocked it in that perspective. But this is supposed to be a design competition, and if you lose your money and you don’t know how to sew, sorry. Thems the breaks. Bert’s little silk Jersey dress was admittedly very cute, something was off in the hem, maybe it was just the fit. His first look however, well, I just wasn’t into it. It was innovative in the top, but the bottom was just a mess. I can’t believe you can send booty shorts with ass cheek cleavage onto the runway and not get speared by La Garcia or Tanorexic Kors.

But the fact that Victor did not win this challenge is a downright insult to worldwide fashion. The fact that the judges acted SURPRISED that he made beautiful clothes was so weird. Have we been watching the same runway all season long??? He has CONSISTENTLY made beautiful clothes and was robbed of the win on at least 2 other occasions in favor of Anya or someone else. In my opinion, Clinique Counter’s outfit was the clear loser last night. Words don’t describe the fashion crimes committed by that horrid “tuxedo shirt” TUCKED IN to those blasphemous pants.

At least Nina ripped him for the print he used. You can’t buy taste.

Fan favorite Anthony Ryan made boring clothes. No doubt he deserved his spot in the bottom three. But at least his clothes didn’t commit crimes.

Victor is the winner, Josh is the loser of this challenge.

Sorry for the long ass rant. I feel only mildly better now.

  I think McQueen was a genius. Clothes were his medium for art, and like many artists, he had a fascination for the grotesque. At first, I didn’t “get” his clothes. But once I stopped looking at them as clothes and started looking at them as art, I began to see just how truly complicated his art was. I think he would have been a great judge for one of the “use this museum as your inspiration” types of challenges. I think it would really separate the women from the girls. Or the men from the boys. If you haven’t looked at the photos from The Met exhibit, you should. It gives a lot more context to his clothes, and you get to stare at his expertly constructed art.

Viktor had the best design but they gave the win to Anya because hers would be super easy to reproduce and sell. Also, Bert was smart and used the Piperline stuff the best and got the nod from them. They know Viktor is the best designer but they want the others to feel competitive and gave the win to somebody else.
