PR: Crawling Toward the Finish Line
Oh, god. Let’s just get this over with.
This is the first time we’ve seen something of Anya’s where we thought, “Girl, WHAT were you THINKING?”
But the more we look at it, the more we have to give her credit. She didn’t make a cocktail dress and add shit to it. She tried to think about color and form and how they relate to the painting.
The thing is, she seems to have stuck mostly with replicating the colors of the piece. We don’t see anything else from the painting in the dress.
And to be fair, she did manage to play around with shapes and proportions. That doesn’t automatically make it avant garde, but at least she made the attempt to break out of the box.
But the Chicken Lady styling really didn’t help.
Bryce was freaking out over this challenge but once we saw the dress, we were pretty convinced he was safe for the week.
A strait-jacket-inspired dress is not exactly a new idea.
Especially when you gussy it up in faux-Victorian elements like a gigantic flounce.
The dress is too simple, though. That flounce wasn’t enough. There should have been something of interest in the bodice or up near the neck. Strait jackets are all about restriction and we don’t get enough of a sense of that here. It’s just a sheath dress with long sleeves and a flounce attached.
But it wasn’t a bad idea to start from.
Because the picture definitely gives you a sense of unease. It’s interesting that he took a more interpretive approach with the colors rather than trying to replicate them exactly. Oh sure, there are reds and blues aplenty in the picture, but the red and blue of the dress are richer and darker.
Josh M observed that Bryce is shooting for safe every week and that’s why he’s always in trouble. He may be a bitch, but he’s right. Despite being waved through this week, Bryce hasn’t done a thing to change the judges’ minds about him. He’s on the chopping block and he probably knows it. It’ll be interesting to see if he attempts to wow the judges this week. If he doesn’t make that attempt, he’ll be bottom three, for sure.
