Hmmm. No, I’m not feeling it. The illustrations seem so RANDOM. They’re not telling a story, they don’t really connect with the pictures… To me, they look like someone left a bored kid alone with a fashion magazine and a box of sharpies. I would rather see more of the clothes.

  I’d wish people wouldn’t just skim these TRULY AWESOME editorials and dismiss them, just because they aren’t coventionally ‘pretty’.
  The illustrations do not appear random to me at all. For instance, look at the slightly leering look of the graphic in the 3rd picture and how it corresponds with the pose of the model. How the face in the 5th shot could be a close up of the model’s face, which we can’t see, due to her posture. Below that the theme of angles and framework. Etc. I like the whole theme of a black & white character come to life with an updated take on the three-tiered comic strip using purple/blue for the eyes.A lot of work goes into these editorials and there are smart people involved. Just try to think about them before coming up with nothing better than ‘do not get it’. (Sorry alex that was more a response to the entirety of the comments, got a bit carried away there.)

    It’s not about these being not conventionally pretty — I never said that. I do like the idea and theme of this editorial, but not the execution, no matter how much work went into it. If you put your work out there for the public to see, you invite criticism, and I think both positive AND negative criticism is valid and needs to be allowed.
    
    It’s certainly an editorial that raises an emotional response, that much is clear from the comments. Not always a positive one, but apparently pretty often a strong one, which means that it will be memorable. So I guess you could say that it is a success, in that regard.
    
    But the thing is, are people going to remember the clothes, or are they overshadowed by the illustrations, especially with the way they hide much of the clothes?

      As I said, I wasn’t referring solely to your comment. It was the accusation of randomness, that I initially wanted to respond to. And I completely agree that either criticism, positive or negative, can be warranted. I was only annoyed that most of the comments so far were mainly ‘yuk clowns!’ gut reactions. Which was probably part of the overall intention, (the evil!clown is a beloved cliché, after all) but I think you have to look further than that.
      
      As for the argument that the clothes aren’t visible, I’m sorry, but I don’t think it’s valid. Apart from the collar in the 3rd pic there are no crucial design parts obscured. Every other editorial contains pictures with layered styling, close ups or unconventional angles that features one garment more than others or cuts half a gown out of the frame. Here we have mainly full frame shots and uncomplicated designs.
      
      Whether the clothes are what people will remember, I think that’s a different question. Personally, I suspect, I would not have looked at these monochrome looks for long while flipping through a magazine, hadn’t the illustrations caught my attention. And as you said, an emotional response will be memorable. Would anyone be able to look at these pictures and separate the illustration layer entirely from the fashion? I don’t think so. People are going to stop and look at these pictures for whatever reason, and that’s all the creators ever wanted.

This is oddly creepy in a way I can’t even really describe. I don’t think it’s the clowns, and I don’t think it’s the clothes or the model, but something in the way they all come together unnerves me. Not terribly fond of the clothes either, and the makeup plus cartoons make it incredibly hard to actually focus on said clothes. On the other hand I don’t think I’ve seen something like this done before, so points for originality?

I never knew so many people were traumatized by clowns. Now I want to see a study about clown phobia rates in the general adult population vs. those who post on T&Lo.com.

I come down on “interesting.” There’s something about the blueish cast to the photos (at least on my screen) which I find off-putting but it was an interesting presentation and certainly did make me slow down to look more closely. I like the way all the different textures and finishes make black rich & complex.
