Justin Theroux kind of gets on our nerves a little bit. He’s a charismatic actor and a good-looking guy who has a little bit of style to him. You’d think we’d be all over that. But he does give off the distinct whiff of “douche.” See, when GQ asks you what the ladies think of your beard and you respond with “Certain chicks dig it; certain chicks don’t,” we can’t help but sit back, cross our arms, and say “Really, Justin? Really? Are we The Fonz today?”

Bit maybe we should cut him a little slack, because he’s clearly not The Fonz for this editorial in GQ. He’s Serpico.

And that’s kind of fabulous. We’ll automatically applaud any guyditorial that manages to avoid dressing the featured male celebrity like a freshman in college, but this one’s not only stylish and has a specific point of view; it’s also a perfect fit for his looks and personality. If he doesn’t have a ’70s cop flick in the can already, he should work on putting one together. Of course, the budget would have to be enormous, because Al Pacino could saunter all over ’70s New York in outfits that cost no more than 5 dollars total, but in 2011, a gritty cop apparently needs at least 500 dollars for one outfit alone.

Still, he looks hot as hell.

  That photo is a scene straight out of “Serpico,” and the girl was Serpico’s girlfriend. “Serpico” is one of the great American movies. It makes me a little sad to see it used as the basis for selling $150 tee shirts and $3000 jackets. And the photo with Theroux perched on a desk is almost a mockery.

      OK, this is going to be more than you wanted to know, because it’s a little complicated. But I think that if you’re going to do a photo shoot based on a movie, you have to be respectful of the movie. “Serpico” is the true story of a NYC cop who was almost killed by his fellow officers because he not only refused to participate in what was rampant corruption throughout the department, but he actively tried to correct it. A brave and honorable man. The photo of this actor perched on the desk looked just so precious–male model in his skin-tight pinwale cord/velveteen pants–and nothing at all like an undercover cop in a precinct. Maybe this is why the movies that are often used in fashion shoots are comedies (“Some Like It Hot”) or kitschy classics (“Sunset Boulevard”). If you’re going to use a serious film about a real person, you have to be much more true to the character than I felt that photo was.

    I think a Serpico-inspired photo shoot is inspired, actually. Sure, he’s no Al Pacino, but I thought the images were much better than we’ve seen lately for men, and I think it’s because the have a decent story (straight from Serpico)

I’ve somehow managed to avoid seeing everything he’s appeared in except for the music video for Muse’s Hysteria.

I prefer Mulholland-Drive Justin (oh the things I would do to him), but he looks pretty good here. I don’t care for beards (I’m more of a Grunge-era goatee girl), but at least his is well-groomed.

  Listen, I’m annoyed with the Aniston coverage too. But this guy has cred. He co-wrote Tropic Thunder and wrote the screenplay for Iron Man 2, and has a very respectable list of acting roles. He’s not an oil heir or nightclub owner. His only mistake so far is being Jen’s 7365th boyfriend.

I like that there’s a consistent retro cop movie look going on (or, as you guys accurately called it, Serpico). But there’d have to be a ton of charisma going on in person for me to care. Not my look.

(Do they HAVE editors? Do they have paid photoshop techs? Do interns do the layout for free pizza at night and send off the final in the morning before the grown ups get in? Because what’s going on with the sidewalk between that girl’s legs in the stepping-off-the-curb pic is egregious. Also hard to miss, if you’re sighted.)
