Okay, let’s all have an eyeball-cleansing after that last post.

Let’s look at Tom Binns jewelry, darlings. You’ve seen it gracing some very famous necks:

We’re inclined, when we read things like “Ethno Teknic,” to roll our eyes until we’re in pain, but for once, someone really did manage to blend tribal design sensibilities with an ultra-modern aesthetic and not have it look pretentious. These are gorgeous pieces that don’t rip off aboriginal designs, but manage to pay a sort of homage to them. We think they’re stunning.

  Unless you are dressed to the nines, a simple solid colored dress would work. Imagine Bert’s dress for Nina with the Brazil Coloured Painted Crystal Bracelet. I’d also rock either pair of earrings with a simple white shirt and jeans.

The name of the collection is silly, but I don’t think matters too much what the designers think the jewelry looks like and we shouldn’t get bogged down in a name. The like these pieces quite a bit; they’re fun and colorful and I like that there are clip on earrings. YEA!

They remind me somewhat of the Israeli designer Ayala Bar (see various examples). I have a necklace from one of her collections that I ALWAYS get compliments on. They’re still not, you know, cheap, but they’re more special-Christmas-present expensive than mortgage-payment expensive.

Like the 1st and 3rd necklaces, and maybe a bracelet…but the rest looks like Forever 21 to me (you watch…they WILL knock it off anyway). Problem is his stuff is just SO expensive and these look very costumey and aren’t worth the high ticket. But great for styling or a one-off. If only we could all just “borrow” this stuff like the celebs do.

I think the entire line is exquisite. And I understand the idea behind the concept of painting the crystals. But… this doesn’t strike me as the kind of jewelry that will hold up over time. I have some pieces from my grandmother, like some of the pieces shown here, and vintage Trifari pieces (which even Michelle Obama has worn), and unless you lose a stone, they are forever beautiful. How soon before the paint chips off of these “crystals”?

The pictures do not show them well enough for me. Is that just flat paint on top of crystals? If so, why bother using crystals for paint application? They could just paint on top of cheap plastic or glass shaped like crystal.

I agree with your assessment, T Lo, but I still am having a hard time getting past the title. The use of the word “ethnic” as a catchall for “melanin-bearers with less stuff than WASPs” Relly makes me grind my teeth. I’m going to say YEA!, but I don’t understand the whole pained crystals thing. Why would you paint them? You can get crystals in any color you want, you can even get them so they aren’t sparkly. So why paint them? Doesn’t it peel off? Or is it some kind of special paint that doesn’t peel off crystals? I’ve never heard of such a thing and I work with crystals sometimes. So color me confused, but I still think they’re interesting.

I really like the bird of paradise earrings but the rest of the designs look clunky & cheap. The painted chrystal necklace looks paricularly gaudy. I can’t picture the woman who would wear that as the design is old looking, but the chrystals look very young & teenage.

I really love those bracelets and especially the second and last necklace pictured. The first earrings though, remind me of Pat Butcher (maybe because they are clip ons).
