Soon to be unemployed (maybe) Glee cast member and not-upcoming Funny Girl cast member Lea Michele casts about for a backup career by doing catalogue work.

Oh, we’re just teasing, she’s in a quite nice editorial for Harper’s.

On not taking a break: “I don’t stop. It’s my nature. People have to tell me to slow down. I plan on playing every role on Broadway. I want to do Evita. I want to do Sweeney Todd with [Glee costar] Chris Colfer. We want to do Wicked. I’ll be Elphaba and he wants to play ‘Guy-linda.’ I want to do movies, make music. Glee is only the beginning.”

On her unconventional features: “I’m five foot three. I don’t look like a lot of other people, you know what I mean? I look like I’m 12. How many managers told me, ‘Get a nose job. You’re not pretty enough’? But I proved them wrong.”

On rumors that she’s a diva: “People have to remember this is all new for us. We’re all reasonably young, except for Cory [Monteith], who’s old. I’ve learned some lessons, but people are going to say what they want to say. I know who I am, and I’m not perfect.”

In other words, “Yes, I’m a diva.” The first rule of being a diva is to own being a diva, so she’s well on her way. And in pure diva fashion, she is working that face so hard she must have needed some muscle relaxers at the end of the day just to unlock it. It’s a fun editorial; the clothes are dramatic and look great on her, and she’s working that lens like it just stole her parking space.

Does anyone know why she didn’t get (or perhaps didn’t even try for) Funny Girl?

  I read somewhere that the producers wanted to steer as far away from the Barbra Streisand version of the show, and casting Lea Michele would not have allowed them to really do that because they are compared so often. They cast Lauren Ambrose (from Six Feet Under) instead, who will be able to pull of a fresh take on the show.

      Yeah, looks-wise I’m not so sure about it- but she definitely has the voice! I think the producers are fighting an uphill battle to make it work with anyone but Barbra.

      I agree, none of that works. Though I’m not a fan of Ms. Lea, if anyone today could pull off “Funny Girl”, she was born to do it. I certainly don’t understand the logic of the producers wanting to steer away from Streisand. I mean, she is what immediately springs to mind when the title “Funny Girl” is mentioned– she’s part of that brand whether they like it or not. Don’t they realize they’re setting an audience up for disappointment if they don’t deliver some aspect of that legend?

        But I think Lauren Ambrose does have some aspect of that legend–she has a voice. She’s older than Streisand was when she played Fanny Brice, but Ambrose’s voice is just raw power, and that’s what Streisand sounded like on the OBC of Funny Girl. I think Lea Michele is already too produced and polished to play Fanny Brice–plus she would have to live up to all of those Streisand comparisons, which is an impossible task for anybody. Everybody would go into that thinking, oh, it’s going to be a lot like Streisand, and be disappointed. Whereas I don’t think anybody going into the revival with Lauren Ambrose will expect anything of the kind. They can concentrate on her performance instead of trying to compare her to Streisand. I think it’s a very savvy move.

        Good points, Anne. I just hope Lauren– who I adore both as a singer & actress– can overcome a 40 year brand. People are still going to come in w/ strong pre-conceived notions. It’s up to her, the composers, writers & producers to have the skill to give them something they weren’t expecting & still be entertained.

        Disagree. Lauren’s going to have to live up to the Streisand comparisons also. Anyone playing Fanny Brice would. And Lea was really the only reason non-theater people even cared about the revival. This is going to be a tough one for Ambrose (who I’ve seen perform live and really does have a great voice) to pull off.

Because at this point, Lea Michele’s name is linked to this revival (and is still being used to draw media attention to it despite the fact that Sher announced months ago that she would be unable to do the revival due to her Glee schedule). And while I’m sure plenty of people will be happy or indifferent that she won’t be Fanny, plenty of people will also be disappointed that it’s not her. And like it or not, Lauren Ambrose just does not look (stereotypical, I know) Jewish enough to play Fanny. She just doesn’t. And I really do believe that will be a problem because that was so central, in a way, to Fanny’s story.

To hear what I mean, compare the ladies’ performances of “My Man” on YouTube. Stylistic interpretations aside, it’s a night and day difference in vocal qualities. Anyhoo, Ambrose has already played a Jewish woman on stage with the same director, and she’s a good enough actress and singer to make it interesting. At least it will be an anti-Streisand production, a breath of fresh air.

        What you personally have or haven’t seen has little to do with what has or hasn’t happened in the world. Michele, with one “l”, was worthy of a Tony nomination for Spring Awakening and has been a terrific comedienne on Glee. Lauren held her own among an outstanding group of actresses on 6FU. Her gritty singing may well prove a good fit for a hopefully grittier Fanny.

        I understand where you’re coming from, but I’m not sure I buy it. There are plenty of Jews who can’t be visually identified. I’ll grant you that Ambrose isn’t really a visual match for Fanny Brice, but it’s already a fictionalized account of Brice’s life, and there are certainly pale red-haired Jews in the world. The trickiest part is probably internalizing Brice’s Jewishness, which I know is incredibly important to her appeal and to the story of Funny Girl–but a good actress could do it. Renée Zellweger played an orthodox Jew in a movie once and I believed her. It can be taught.

        While there are Jews who cannot be visually identified, casting is done by look, to give an immediate visual. And this immediate visual says they are de-ethnicizing this role.
        
        And this isn’t a film – this is stage – it’s a whole other thing. There is a soul and a miriad of nuances that would have to be ‘taught’ and that won’t work. It will sound and look put on rather than organic. This casting is like bad sitcom casting where, instead of hiring funny people, they hire good looking people and try to teach them to punch certain words so they ‘act’ funny. There is a difference between being funny and acting funny. Beyond that, there are THOUSANDS of actresses who are continually told they are ‘too ethnic’ for most roles, so to take this role, which IS ‘ethnic’, and give it to someone who isn’t, is simply stupid and insulting. And she is not even the best person for it.This show is going to be a flop.–GothamTomato

      I thought the same thing. It seems a little insulting that this icon of female Jewish strength, a pioneer of radio, Broadway etc won’t be played by a Jewish woman. I wonder how the Jewish community, who have quite the presence in the Broadway community, will react.

        Why does the actress have to be Jewish? In the upcoming musketeers movie, D’artagnan, that icon of French whatever, is played by a Jewish boy from Beverly Hills. Nothing wrong with that. That’s how it works.

      It’s probably the toughest role out there to cast because it’s so singularly associated with Babs. AND they need someone who can pull of a demanding score, nail a very specific brand of comedy, and act the hell out of the dramatic moments. While physically Ambrose is wrong for the look of Fanny Brice, she’s a tremendous performer and an out-of-the-box casting choice that I think could very well work out. I don’t think casting her was a matter of making Fanny “not Jewish.” I think it was more about finding someone with the raw talent for the part and the nerve to follow up Streisand.

    Yes! My first thought was she’s naked but where are her boobs? Once I realized that it was a white on white issue I went from confused to meh. The dog collar chains don’t help it. I don’t think it’s pants on the bottom, though. Just a case of movement trickery.

In that first photo I though she was wearing a dress with a huge red rose train and matching headpiece! Imagine my disappointment to see she was just wearing a very pretty Lanvin.

She does look good here. I like all the looks on her, and she is sporting quite a variety of silhouettes, which at 5’3″ is pretty impressive.

She’s 1 of those performers who, & I don’t know why, but I just don’t like her. I think it’s because she seems so phony. & not Barbra Streisand “yeah I know you know I’m a phony but we’re both in on the joke” early career phony, but more Karl Lagerfeld “I guess I’ll just have to lower myself to talk to this festering underling” phony.
But then, I don’t watch “Glee” so what do I know?

I absolutely love all the clothes featured here. Love them. I wish I’d seen them modelled by someone else, though. I can think of dozens of other actresses, not to mention actual models, who would look so much more interesting in these fabulous clothes.

I know she wants to do it all but I think Broadway is her natural home. So far, she doesn’t have the acting chops to really command interesting movie roles nor does she have the looks for the typical rom com heroine. She could make a reasonable career out of playing the heroine’s quirky friend but I think she’s more ambitious than that. Her voice is her best asset. She should focus on utilizing that.

I just don’t like her. I’m a big Broadway fan and tried to get her autograph back when she was in the original cast of Spring Awakening. She just sneered at my friend and I and walked away after we waited by the side door for her to come out. She was a diva even back then. However, I think this editorial is really gorgeous.

  I’m going to defend her here, because, not to marginalize your experience or anything, but I feel like at this point people love to hate her and are just looking for reasons to continue to justify that hatred. I met her during her SA days and she was nice and talked to use for a while and was actually a naturally pretty funny girl (told some jokes about us all having seen her breasts and we should buy her dinner now) and was nice. I’m a big Broadway fan so I was around during that mania. A lot of Spring Awakening fans were overly entitled and became super creepy. They posted her address everywhere, camping outside of her apartment during her off time looking for autographs or taking underhanded pics, were really lascivious when they talked to her, and were stalking her home. She came out a lot with everyone else when the show first started but when all of that started happening, I think she justifiably got a lot more cautious. So maybe your impression is correct and she was a diva, or maybe she was just having a bad day.

The rest of the editorial is pretty, but you could insert anybody in it and it would look the same. I don’t know if that was the purpose, but it’s just meh.

Most of this looks really good. I think that first dress with the hat looks like its swallowing her, as does the teal thing. She looks great in everything else. In general, I’m not a fan but I do admire her for not giving into the managers who recommended she get a nose job because they thought she wasn’t pretty enough. I think she has a really unique look and kudos to her for recognizing it.

Snarkykitten said it better than I could. My first reaction to the cover shot was what happened to her breast? It too me a while to see the dress fading into the background. NOT a good picture–the photographer, and the editor should both be seriously reprimanded.
The rest of the pictures were very nice although she does get swallowed up by the red gown. The teal is a lovely color and I liked the photo with it light and airy.
Her character gets on my last nerve, as well, but I keep hoping that she is more grounded in real life. Do like that she refused to have a nose job.

I hate the cover, even if you could see the dress I hate the gold/white combo, a bit too tacky for my taste. Otherwise, I think she looks stunning in this editorial, a big change from GQ. The white on white cover is a bit odd/dumb (and didn’t Jennifer Aniston do the same thing in last year’s September issue? HB is getting rally repetitive). But it does make her skin look amazing and her eyes pop. Girlfriend is blessed with a seriously great head of hair. And lucky to have such great proportions because she is tinny. I feel like they styled her way too old. But she really is rocking that red Valli dress. And I wanted that Valentino dress in my closet the day I was born.

I love the feel of the spread, but curiously each picture has something that doesn’t work.
White on rice & overly photoshopped cover. In the first shot it looks as if she was funneling an avalanche of roses through her head and out of her shoulder; black rose tumor needs to be removed; hair obscuring boob gives her a weird shape; extensions look like Cher around ’98; and the Gucci is not very flattering. Still dig the concept and set design.
