Cover Girl: Christina Ricci for Nylon

We think Christina Ricci’s facial expression on the cover of Nylon pretty much mirrors our own when we saw it.

We’re really not sure what the thinking was here. She’s flogging her early-’60s-set TV show, so they put her in Twiggy makeup, really modern clothes, and gave her a … guitar? No wonder she’s got that look on her face. And there must have been a real crunch for time because they obviously only took the one picture of her. Surely they didn’t choose this picture out of hundreds shot, did they? They must have had no choice but to throw a guitar at her and take one quick picture while she was asking “But what am I supposed to do with the guitar?”

We kind of dig the ensemble, but literally everything happening above the neck is a poor choice. It’s one of the worst pictures of her we’ve ever seen.

This is a sad and wasted opportunity – she’s got great features to really pull of a 1960s mod look and it would have made a killer cover and editorial if she had done something a la Twiggy or Jean Shrimpton but with a fresh and modern twist. For Shame, Nylon!

Is her show Sixties-themed? That outfit sure isn’t. You’d think someone in fashion would have spent at least 10 minutes looking at 60s clothes before. That outfit is a bad parody of two different moments in the SEVENTIES. And the guitar is wrong, too; it looks Eighties or Nineties to me. F-minus.

      I had hot pants in high school; wore ‘em under a very short minidress. I graduated high school in 1969. Within a year, the dresses were getting longer.

Love the outfit, though. Pure 60s–mixing those patterns.
BTW–I remember when Twiggy was modeling–her eyes were never so blackened as this. She had those sweet drawn-on bottom lashes with no eyeliner, from what I remember. I still wear my mascara that way!

It took me a minute to figure out that that thing is a guitar. And then WTF settled in. I mean, it looks like they took a picture of her and then later thought, “you know what this picture needs? A guitar!” So they slapped in a guitar at an awkward angle and photoshopped in what they thought were the appropriate shadows.

Is it really supposed to be reminiscent of the ’60′s? It’s just totally wrong, from the hair to the clothes. Very odd.

I rarely buy fashion magazines, and this cover certainly validates my usual practice. Her sanpaku is really scary (sanpaku = the white under your eyes as well as the two areas of white on either side of the iris showing, which in macrobiotic lore means you are overly fatigued and at risk for disease and accidents). I don’t believe in that, but if you look at most people, you can’t see the bottom of the whites generally. Thus CR looks very strange.

  it looks to me like it was a novice makeup artist who was trying to replicate that odd googly eye effect lady gaga did awhile back with the white eyeliner. or some weirdo photoshopped it. disturbing either way. i do kind of like the outfit, interesting prints. the guitar is pointless.

These clothes are really modern? The prints seem pretty 60s/70s to me, and didn’t that kind of cut high on the leg, high-waisted shorts have a moment in… the 50s? 60s? 70s? Somewhere in there? (I know they’re coming back recently, so they’re modern in that sense, but I feel like they are referential to some retro period.)

The guitar is weird, though, for sure. That is not the outfit, make-up, or pose of a hard-rocking, electric guitar-playing girl. Also, and I think this is the pickiest comment I’ve ever made, neither the color nor the design motif on the guitar gels with the rest of what’s in the picture.

This one is multi-tasking. She is NatalieRoseLiLo…and just an underline of crackhead at 3:52 on the a.m. (referring to the dead on look she is giving us) She is what 31 or so…and is able to pull of 14. Could be impressive if the kids nowadays were into it. She should take the Drew Barrymore route and just get serious before folks don’t know that she is important.
