WERQ: Dita Von Teese in a Vintage Dress

Shouting a “WERQ!” out to Miss Dita in a vintage dress seems a little redundant, but what else could we say?

Dita Von Teese launches her new Signature Cocktail “The Cointreau MargaDita” at Rosewood Mansion in a vintage dress paired with Christian Louboutin shoes and clutch.

Because it seems to us, when a gal has a party thrown in honor of the margarita named after her, then that gal should DEFINITELY wear the most colorful retro dress she can find and carry a clutch that looks like celery. You WERQ that Joan Holloway shit, Miss Dita!

  I thought the same thing, although different fabrics in vintage clothes can age dramatically differently. What matched in 1958 may no longer match, especially under flash photography.

Why is it not okay for other celebs to wear matching clothes/shoes, but in this instance it’s okay? I’m not trying to be a jerk, but her shoes look like they match the green in her dress, but black would look boring also. Is it because the outfit is such a complex pattern? I’m honestly asking because I’d like to understand other people’s POV and love wearing retro clothes for work!

  I have the same exact question as DJ. My only guess is that if this dress were worn in its original period, then matching shoes would have been OK, and Dita belongs to another time. But the contemporary look would not allow the matching. Weak logic, I know, but I can’t imagine why else it’s OK here.

  That rule takes a back seat when you’re talking really big prints. I think it works here because there’s an awful lot going on here. To introduce another color with the shoe would push it over the top into crazy land. The shoe matches a lesser color in a very colorful print.

  I have no problem with shoes matching the clothes or purse matching the shoes. We often hear TLo and others say it’s too Barbie doll or whatever, but I’m puzzled by people who will use a color that clashes with everything just to avoid appearing too matchy. Besides, during the 1920s-1960s, when women really knew how to dress up, they matched their gloves, shoes, accessories, etc.

  Because with a dress like this there is no choice but to pick one strong color and go with it. The dress is too buy for a contrasting color. Also Her shoes are one color from the outfit and her bag another. Barbie matching would be if all the accessories were the exact color of the bag.

    Also, there are enough elements going on to match accessories here. Often when celebs get criticized for matching dress to accessories, it’s because they’re wearing a plain and/or boring dress and there is nothing going on visually EXCEPT for the fact that crap matches.

  For me, it would have been too matchy if the shoes and purse were the exact same color as in the sash, which are the dominant colors in this look. Another factor is the number of colors in the dress and the complex pattern.

I know retro looks are her shtick, but I’d like to see her try something more contemporary. That being said, she’s really wearing the dress (instead of the other way around), working the colors and bold pattern. Her face is lighter than her neck and body though. Maybe she could be a bit more sparing on the foundation and/or powder?

  My face is always lighter than my neck/chest so if I’m matching my foundation to my face it would end up looking like that.

That’s happened to me, especially when I’ve worn foundation with sunscreen or blotted with light reflecting powder.   I agree with you – her face foundation is too light. Even if my face is lighter than my chest or neck at time ( and in the summer my face and chest are darker than my neck), I don’t try to make it worse. I have several different shades I have to use.

Dita’s makeup, though, always looks pretty aging to me. She’s a pretty woman, and I totally get that the 40s/50s are her shtick, but I’d love to see her tone it down just a bit.

  Cointreau MargaDita: 1.5 oz Cointreau,1.5 oz Silver Tequila. 1 oz Fresh Lime Juice, 1/2 oz Monin Rose Syrup, pinch Chipotle Spice.
  Put this all in a shaker full of ice and give it a good shake. Pour into a glass that may/may not be rimmed with salt and chipotle spice.

  I acually like the hem length. Which leads to a question I’ve wondered about for a while: TLo is consistently hard on this midcalf New Look length (e.g. on Jennifer Lawrence and Sofia Vergara at this year’s Critic’s Choice Movie Awards), which they describe as unflattering. But how could it have been flattering in the mid 40s-50s and unflattering now? “Old fashioned” I could see, but human bodies haven’t changed. When I look at old Vogue photos the women look incredibly chic, so how can it be a hard and fast rule that it doesn’t work on gorgeous women with great legs now?

      I think it’s at least partly because people look at Dita and put their regular fashion ‘rules’ and preconceptions aside because she doesn’t even pretend to follow them. I’ve thought other celebs have looked good in that skirt length, but as they’re judged by recent fashion they get shown the ‘would look better shorter’ card. Same with matching shoes, red lipstick, black eyeliner etc etc.
