Penélope Cruz for V Magazine

Penelope Cruz gets her Princess Leia on for the cover of V magazine, but thankfully, there are no cinnamon buns on display.

We kinda love that cover because that’s not at all how we’re used to seeing her. Looks like a vintage early ’80s Interview magazine cover. She looks stunning, but apparently that wasn’t enough for V (or the current magazine market):

Because Penny done got herself hologram’d.

How jarringly life-like!

A silly little gimmick, but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do to move those issues off the rack, right? At least we got a series of gorgeous pics out of it.

  I’d guess they’re referring to the fact that Penelope is a hologram on the cover…much like Leia in the first Star Wars movie is projected by R2-D2 as a hologram.

        That is what I am curious about. I know even regular piercings have some stretch to them, but I am not sure how much and if those actually are gauged earrings. If they are, that’s pretty damn cool.

      Eeh… personally I don’t find self-mutilation attractive but to each his own I guess.
      
      And her ears aren’t gauged. If you look really, really closely at the first picture you’ll see that the earrings are conical. The wide base of the cone is resting against her earlobe giving the illusion that they’re gauged.

        Do you have issues with regular earrings then? Or tattoos?
        
        Now that I am looking at the pics on my big HD monitor at home, I can see that the earrings are conical. My work monitor is an ancient CRT piece of crap. I couldn’t even tell the pics were this bright!

        I wouldn’t say they’re “issues” but I am not a fan of neither.
        
        I never understood the appeal of piercing your ears (or body for that matter) to hang jewelry off of it when a clip-on works just a well (in the ears, at least). Then there’s the infections and re-piercing because the holes close up. I do take issue with parents who pierce their baby’s ears. It just seems wrong, like they should give their child the choice when they’re older instead of making that choice for them.
        
        I think tattoos ruin everything. You could be the hottest guy on the planet and if you’re all tatted up you won’t make my pants move. Then again, it also depends on where the tattoo is located, how big it is, and what it is but overall they’re a big thumbs down for me. It’s such a permanent thing to do to your body.
        
        Make no mistake, I’m certainly not judgmental or discriminatory about it. A vast majority of my friends are pierced and tattooed. I just don’t find it attractive. Like I said, to each his own. Variety is the spice of life, right?

        Oh, get over yourself. An earring is not the same as stretching huge holes into one’s ear lobes. And tattoos? Duh. I guess you’re from some place where one can’t have stretched out earlobes without throwing in a tattoo or two. Newsflash! Each CAN be independent of the other and most of the time you will find tattoos and not a stretched out earlobe in sight.

        No, I was bringing up two common examples of body modification. Piercing your ears is still sticking a piece of metal/bone/plastic into your flesh and creating a scar, even if no one would question it as something not socially acceptable. Nowhere did I imply that if you have one, you have to have the other.

  No, her ears are not stretched out. They have two regular sized earring holes. The earrings she’s wearing are just studs which are usually hammered into leather but in this case, someone has mounted earring posts into the back of them and turned them into earrings. You may recognise the studs from any “punk” belt one can buy in Camden Market in London or in the Village in New York.

Fabulous and fierce as fook! She has the strong features to carry that angular 80s look and the graphic design is really strong, not something we’re used to seeing on covers anymore.

Just one thing, that’s more a lenticular than a hologram.

This is why I love V magazine. They always do fun gimmicky covers. A few years back for the Lady Gaga cover they glued plastic in the shape of sunglasses on the cover and you could choose what color you wanted: pink, blue, yellow. And for a nightlife issue the V glowed in the dark. V magazine is like the bratty, younger, hipster sister of W>

OMG, I have to go and buy this issue, just for this cover! The hologram is a cheap gimmick, but the psychedelic 80s technicolor is just amazing. It really is something very different from what we usually associate with Penelope, but she’s working it like crazy.
