Meet the Season 9 Project Runway Designers – Part 5

Just for shits and giggles, let’s make completely unfair and unfounded comparisons to classic PR contestants.

David Chum

When did you realize you had designer potential?
In high school, when I was designing costumes for the theater company. It came naturally to me and was something I enjoyed doing.
What is your design training?
The only sewing class I took was in middle school. I learned to sew a pillow. All my knowledge is from text books and experimentation.
What’s influenced your designs over the years?
In the past, old movies, nature, armor, flowers, insects, mythology, etc. Recently, butterfly chrysalises. This has translated to anatomical seaming in my work.
Why do you think you will win Project Runway?
Once I have my mind set on something I will work my butt off until I get it. I am extremely driven and persistent.

Looks like we’ve got a live one here, kittens.

Ok, he’s got a little more personality than we first assumed. Still, he strikes us the focused-to-the-point-of-insufferable type when the pressure’s on. Emilio 2.0. Aesthetically, he’s a bit all over the place, but we like the ideas, even if the execution doesn’t always look that great.

Rafael Cox

What are your strengths as a designer?
Patternmaking and draping, and just making really distinctive pieces.
What celebrity would you like to design for?
Rihanna. I would love to design her some tour costumes.
What’s influenced your designs over the years?
I am usually inspired by everyday people and have used them as my influence most of the time.
Why do you think you will win Project Runway?
I have the experience in being creative as well as the determination to be successful in the fashion industry. I am passionate and self-driven and motivated to fully pursue my dreams as a designer.

Oh god, what model of Nick Verreos are we on now? There have been a LOT of Nick Verrei in the last 6 seasons. We’ll call him Nick 6.0 to make it simple. As for the work, it all looks pretty underwhelming to us. We’re thinking Nina will use him as a whipping boy for a while.

Laura Kathleen

When did you realize you had designer potential?
When I was born. Never changed my mind that I wanted to work in fashion, even though I was a tomboy all through elementary school.
Current occupation?
Designer/fashion design teacher.
What’s influenced your designs over the years?
Pin-up and vintage style mixed with modern techniques; manipulate fabric and layer prints.
Why do you think you will win Project Runway?
I know what I’m doing.

Well! Someone certainly thinks very highly of herself, doesn’t she? This one should be fun. Either the above responses are hilarious or distressingly humorless, depending upon how charitable you want to be. We’re pretty sure we know who her predecessor was, but let’s go to the tape.

We KNEW it. Kenley 2.0. With perhaps a smidgen of Gretchen’s airy self-absorption. She showed some decent pieces, though. And any designer who goes to the prints so often immediately gets our attention.

  I’ve been thinking the same thing regarding Gretchen. It’s interesting that Mondo has been the judge of choice from last season.
  
  On the way out the door this morning, I caught the tail end of Heidi on Regis & Kelly. She brought a clip that showed what looked like a casting session–very much like the clips we’ve been seeing. Only THIS time it included Michael, Nina, Heidi and Tim Gunn. Apparently the designers have to show their wares to the judges. The clip was with Anya, and the judges were up in arms because she’d only been sewing her own stuff for four months prior to the casting. Mr. Gunn was LIVID. I haven’t seen him this upset since he ripped Gretchen a new hole. It seems unfair…but really good television.

    Interesting. Maybe it is a second-tier casting session? Or maybe a post-casting getting-to-know you session with the judges, so they can form early biases. Sure would explain a lot.

      I caught GMA this morning. Everyone wanted to cut Miss Trinidad but Heidi fought for her and won apparently.
      On another note, I’m so glad that Laura Kathleen knew when she was BORN that fashion was for her. I’m 48 and still haven’t decided what i want to be when I grow up!

    Tim did mention he wasn’t part of the casting sessions this year, so that sound like it may have been the first time he was seeing the designers. Someone who has been sewing for 4 mths is the equivalent of having a home cook on Top Chef with those restaurant chefs; it’s unfair to everyone.

    I am enjoying the surprise of who is in on the phone calls that Alisa makes. It’s like she is making the calls from the break room or something–never the same people. They all seem like they are trying not to laugh and were told they had to be quiet. I’m seriously wondering what snarky stuff was said before the phone starts ringing.

Never trust anyone who has two first names for their whole name. A single name is OK. Two just sounds pretentious.

Yuck! All three of these designers MUST have been cast for their drama-quotient and not their ability to sew, tailor or design. Yeah, at least one will probably be around for the top 5, just for the ratings.

I’m sure there is a very lovely young man somewhere under that eye liner. So when I bitch-slap you across the face it will be with love, and also to remove the makeup.

Maybe then you’ll be able to see that your designs are lackluster at best, and that your reason for winning PR sounds more like the objective section on a college graduate’s first resume. There is still time to fix it. I really do critique because I love.

      ha! Dude at my gym. First time I met him he was coming to class with earrings in both ears, several gold chains around his neck, several gold bracelets, an anklet and a nipple ring. At first I gave him major side eye cause that’s a lotta look to splash around in the pool, but he’s a nice guy and we occasionally chat after class. He just needs a makeover and a time machine to transport him out of the 80′s.

David Chum’s designs and styling are both interesting–I’m looking forward to seeing what he puts together with very limited time constraints. I like Laura’s prints, but the Kenley-Gretchen vibe is scaring me a little.

Rafael is going to get the poor-execution and slutty-slutty-slutty critiques. He’s already walking down Broadway, looking for a cab to the airport.

I really liked David’s videos, especially the tour of his apartment. He collects lots of great stuff and I loved how he was sarcastic when he talked about it. He might be Emilio with a sense of humor, which is aok with me, since that’s what Emilio lacked.

okay– i hate the 80s, especially the mainstream 80s, i hate clothes w/ ghastly colorways, i hate people who use their first & middle names as their noms de guerre– i mean, how uncreative is that? if you gotta rename yrself cant you use anything other than yrself as inspiration? &, besides all that, her work is horrible. so there’s that.

as for the top guy, he’s about thirty years old & he still thinks his high school had a theater company? but, aside from what will be forever called its construction issues, his work isnt bad. not new, not bad.

the middle guy’s work i dont remember too much except that it involves jeggings & the perpetually innovative visible zippers.

then again, didnt the top guy expose his zippers also? will people ever remember zippers actually have a function, one infinitely transmutable w/ other closures, all of which can be bared to the air as well?

There certainly seem to be a large number of designers who don’t seem to have formal training. I wonder if this year there will be one challenge that a designer has nothing to send down the runway.

Butterfly chysalises? Anatomical seaming? Oh-kay. He certainly seems to have some seam issues on those dresses.

Laura’s dresses look well-made, but nothing earth-shattering.

Not impressed with Rafael at all-what’s his deal with putting weird shit on the garments? And, those mini-dresses look too tight for the skinny models, but that cut-out dress looks too big. It’s gaping. It could just be their stances, but it’s unflattering.

I have one thing to say to all these three. And I’m sure Nina will bear me out. I don’t want to see another exposed zipper detail as long as I live. None of them have what it takes in any real sense. they’re all on for drama factor, not for talent.

Sewbot (love that moniker!)…his designs don’t do much for me, and his execution is distractingly poor. Nick 6.0 doesn’t do much for me, either. That leaves Kenly 2.0. I do admire her use of prints, but there’s nothing really original about any of her offerings. And those hats look like something she found in the bargain bin at the local Goodwill. Can’t wait for Thursday night, though. I’ve got to remember to program the old DVR.

David Chum – I dunno about personality here. I’m still seeing Chum of 9. I do like that dark teal dress, so we’ll see how he does.

Maybe there should be some sort of Timm Gunn’sTen Commandments that the contestants should be required to follow. Perhaps something along the lines of:

Thou shalt not use thy tacky glue gun in completion of thy garment
thou shall know and how to operate and fix thy sewing machine assigned to them.
thous shalt not engage in tacky and overpalyed trimming such as exposed zippers
etc, etc. etc. You get the idea.

I might have underestimated Laura Kathleen in my initial presumption, ha. Her doily dress and incredibly aging look in her pic threw me off. She might have something there with the prints (she knows they exist, so she’s ahead of everyone else usually on PR).

I think Chum is going to get the “tortured” criticism if his portfolio is any indication.

David Chum: He seems a bit of a snot to me. I don’t really like his stuff-yawn. What’s up with the Bob’s Big Boy hair?
Rafael: Another that I’m not terribly impressed on the clothes, kind of Star-Treky for my taste. He looks like a magician. Put him in a cape–see it? He seems like a sweetie, though. I adore the recycled jean top and hope for a thrift store challenge this season because I think he’ll do well there.
Laura Kathleen: Can we PLEASE retire zebra print? UGH. I saw it in her videos more than 3 times, even on the bed. I do not care when women use their middle name as their last, nor women who carry dogs around with them like purses. She should be interesting, but not in a good way. Her clothes seem somewhat interesting, beyond the hideous zebra print..

I have to admit I’ve developed a bit of an obsession with the pictures the designers submit of their clothes on models. It seems to give a bit of a window into what kind of girl they aim to dress and where their taste level lies. I bring this up because of Rafael Cox’s picture of the blue dress or outfit or whatever it is. I mean, seriously, WTF? Is “confused, drunk girl” actually a demographic? And when you want to show off your clothes to their best advantage, is this seriously what you choose? Gadzooks, that is definitely a Cox Blocker.

I wish I had been born with the same level of hyper-consciousness as Laura Kathleen, who came out of the womb with enough self-awareness to know that she was a designer. It took me a lot longer than that just to learn to walk, talk, read and write.

Okay, down the list:

David Chum – Construction issues. I like the second dress in the portfolio pictures, though.

There are a lot of self-taught designers this season, aren’t there? I’m sure the show is and always has been a magnet for self-taught designers, but the fact that so many have made it on the show (or at least onto the first episode) seems different (and maybe a little worrying).

Rafael – Exposed zippers. Exposed *expletive deleted* zippers! Why? Why? And why do I get the feeling that if there’s an “avant-garde” challenge, he’s going to interpret that to mean “giant one shoulder piece”? Little Tim Gunn voice in my head saying “student work”.

[Oh, but I greatly enjoyed the "Verrei" comment; technically, it probably should be "Verreoi", but that's somehow not as funny.]

Laura Kathleen – I don’t hate it. It doesn’t seem especially fresh and new, but I don’t absolutely hate it. At least she does use prints.
