Josh Hartnett in SoHo

Normally, we wouldn’t have much to say about Josh Hartnett’s casual street look here:

But it brings to mind an ongoing ~~argument~~ discussion in our house; namely, to cuff or not to cuff one’s shorts. You see, it all started one day when Lo came downstairs with his new shorts, expertly cuffed. Tom took one look, pointed at Lo’s thighs and said:

“Don’t do that.”

“Shut up. You’re not the boss of me.”

And that was pretty much that. Tom cannot express strongly enough how bad cuffed shorts look on the male leg but Lorenzo thinks it’s fabulous and that Tom is uncouth and without any style instincts. Josh actually doesn’t look bad with his shorts cuffed, but that could be because he’s so slim and because they’re a long, fitted pair of shorts. Lo approves but Tom thinks he looks a little bit like Jennifer Grey in Dirty Dancing. We’re both mostly in agreement that the runway versions of the look don’t set us on fire. The cuffs are too rolled and sloppy-looking or the shorts are too big and roomy, or the cuffs have a gingham detail that’s too gay even for us. No, kittens, even in our disagreement we can come together as a couple and declare that this look is not always easy to pull off. What say the minions on this one?

Was this on Saturday because I think I saw him….. Yes, cuffed shorts are kind of cool if done right. I do it when the designer of the shorts made them way too long. We don’t go to the gym in order to hide our quads under manpris.

  I agree on the shorts shorts – though they DO have their place, like sports: I don’t remember when it was that basketball players went from the fitted short shorts to those big, balloony shorts they wear now. But the balloony shorts definitely lower the entertainment value of the sport (if you know what I mean).
  
  As for Josh, he looks OK here, though a little too Trey MacDougal-y for my taste. But the models on the right & left: No.

I’d vote nay on the cuffed shorts. It looks too affected–just get shorts in the length you want them! But can we talk instead about how terrible the sunglasses are? He looks like he’s about to watch a 3D movie, no?

Honestly, I would have been paying too much attention to the sunglasses (which I hate on him) and the shoes (which I love for some reason) to even notice. So I guess that classifies as a “Meh”.

I think it depends on the shorts and the legs sporting them. I’m “meh” on Hartnett’s; think they are all kinds of wrong on the guy in the far left photo (with the man-bag and the saggy sweater); but like them in the other three model shots.

Also, I wouldn’t even have recognized Josh Hartnett from that first photo. Where has he been the last few years?

Nooo! No cuffed shorts on men ever ever ever! And I can’t even articulate why. There’s just this sort of visceral reaction I have to them, like all the hairs on the back of my neck bristle at once and I want to shove my hand through the computer screen and uncuff those models’ shorts. No. I can’t get behind this look. It’s way too early 90′s for me. What’s next, white socks with low-top Doc Martens? Though I will say he doesn’t look bad, I just wish the shorts were hemmed at his knee instead of cuffed. I do like the length of the shorts.

But I hate the dirty shoes (though at least they aren’t flip flops); they are fine for a day at the lake or mowing your grass, but they are too filthy to wear with a shirt and shorts that you had to iron.

I’m having difficulty getting past the sunglasses. It’s not the color, it’s the shape and size that are just wrong for his face. They make him look like he grabbed his toddler’s sunglasses by mistake.

Cuffed shorts, meh. Not my cuppa, but I do kind of like the contrast of the cuff.

I think they look good the way Josh has them (love the contrasted cuffs!) but I hate all of the runway looks. Like peplums on women, this is a look about 95% of men could not pull off.

I feel like cuffed shorts accentuate the tightness of the shorts (for men with bigger thighs) or the scrawniness of the leg (for men with skinner thighs). There are almost no winners there. That said, I think Josh looks the best of any of the men pictured. I just don’t like the look. I also might be in the minority here, but I kind of hate the contrasting colors on Josh and the D&G model.

I think it’s kind of picking a nit at this point. There’s a detail ruining an otherwise good look and then there’s focusing solely on each detail and losing the whole. Once you’re wearing shorts and your not Brade Goreski or Johnny Weir and confused about where you’re going, the little details become less important.

In the case of Hartnett, those are still pretty long shorts, even with the cuff, and he’s quite tall, so I don’t know who could wear them without cuffs. And since the silhouette isn’t affected in this photo and the color isn’t that different from the rest of the short, and he overall looks casual but not sloppy, had I not been directed to the cuffs I’d have been questioning the Stacy Q signature Ray Bans from 1985 more than the cuffs on his shorts. Because THAT’S the silly detail that kills an otherwise perfectly acceptable summertime look.

Shorts are fine, little long but passable and cuffs sometimes look better than non-cuffed (but yeah, the gingham is yuck).
Shirt … meh. Not a great plaid, there are many better, especially for summer.
Did he borrow the sunglasses from his 8 year old niece? Otherwise there is no excuse. Too small and too pale.
And the shoes … it looks like he rolled a bum for a pair of worn-out dirty $5 Wal-Mart Keds knock-offs. Sandals would be better, hell even boat shoes would be an improvement.

It depends mostly on the man wearing them. I mean, for example i cant imagine my brother wearing them, even if he is very young and has a nice body, coz he is more on the classic-serious-boring side fashion wise. But i saw a man on the srteet the other day sporting them and i was like h my, he looks yumy! So, if you feel comfortable in them, go ahead and wear them.

As with most things fashion related, it totally depends on the details (rolled, folded, fitted, loose, ect) and the wearer (tall, thin, short, stocky, gay, straight, ect). Mr. hartnett’s shorts look perfectly fine on him, he has the height and the legs for it. I think he is getting much better looking with a little bit of maturity. Now, on to the real crime here….. THOSE STUPID ASS SUNGLASSES!!! They are just awful on a grown man, wrong color, wrong style. Wrong, wrong, wrong…..

I live in Oslo, Norway, and suddenly this past weekend noticed this shorts trend to the point that I started a discussion of it on FB. BUT! The cuffs I was seeing on shorts were mostly very tailored – not rolled – and the shorts themselves were also closely tailored. I noticed the look in the first place because I saw a few very good looking guys in them, and thought a) OK, that’s new, and b) OK, that’s hot. My opinion is: only on younger guys, and best with thicker, muscular thighs than skinny ones.

It’s an attention-grabbing look, for sure. What with the cheesy grin, girl sunglasses, homeless person shoes, little-boy haircut and lumberjack shirt. The shorts cuffs are the last thing I noticed.

I’m gonna go ahead and say YEA, because why not. It’s certainly not the worst thing about this look. And somehow with everything going on, he is still kinda cute.

Some looser shorts look nice with crisp cuffs, but it has to be just right. The LV and D&G pics above look okay.

I think it’s all in the tailoring and the leg and hips. In order for the look to work, you need shorts that are fitted and straight without being baggy or skin tight. Also, the cuffs must be neatly pleated. I don’t think any guy can pull this off, either. It works best with a slender leg and straight hip. No super muscly calves or mothering hips.

I can’t vote yes or no on cuffs because, like others here, I think it depends on the shorts and the guy wearing them. I think more tailored shorts look fine with a neat cuff.

I think if the guy has well-muscled legs, the shorts are not too baggy or too tailored, and the cuff is subtle, then it’s okay. I think Josh looks fine here, which is a testament to the trend working in very particular situations.

Josh’s shorts are fine, it’s the sunglasses that look dumb. Very few people can pull off white frames. I like the middle tow runway looks. Final vote for me is YEA, but it has to be done correctly to work. Overall longer shorts look better with a cuff.

White sunglasses on a guy just scream “I’m a total douche” to me. It probably doesn’t help that the first guy I saw with them was NASCAR’s Juan Pablo Montoya, who IS a total douche.

I cuff my shorts haha. I really don’t think it looks bad, as long as the shorts aren’t baggy. Plus, you can control the length on them, since most men’s shorts sold in stores go beyond the knee.
I roll up my jean shorts that I got at a thrift store because they are too long and have a weird finish on the hem. I also roll up a pair of shorts I made from pants, because my cut was horribly uneven.

I think I like this look, on him at least. It helps that the cuffs are in a subtly contrasting colour and that he’s so cute. This is also a good cuff length, because without them the shorts would be over the knee, which would look weird.

Cuffed shorts MUST be long (almost knee length) and the cuffs themselves must be between 1″ and 1 1/2″ wide. It also helps if you’re a crocodile hunter.
